The canned audience is so fucking unnerving, I can't believe you didn't talk about it. When the kid says "I can't drink, I'm not 21" and everyone in this fake-ass audience immediately goes "Oooo", like they were familiar with the relationships between characters and they knew for sure that kid was about to be physically abused for daring to turn down a beer; then when the much larger adult squares up like he's about to slam the kid's head in a door, there's this little cacophony of laughter and "Woah-hohs!" straight out of a fucking nightmare. The beer joke is actually hilarious and let me explain why. It's a perfect parallel to conservative victimhood. Norm does a thing that's wrong (throws a beer at Chaz, and encouraged underage drinking), gets a very mild response (I can't drink, and not even a condemnation of Norm's actions), then a direct consequence of his own actions (the beer exploding from him shaking it up by throwing it), and then him whining about said completely avoidable and also incredibly mild consequences. In that show, of course, he is the butt of the joke. There's a very famous example of this in Quebec, socialist separatist director Pierre Falardeau made a comedy called Elvis Gratton, about a pathetic failed Elvis impersonator. It's very transparently meant to be a skewering of french canadians who lack class consciousness, national identity and try to model themselves after American ideals and lifestyles. The character is racist, stupid, mean spirited, sexist, constantly talking shit about poor people despite living in a trailer park, violently opposed to moving on from the 50s pop culture wise, etc. But a vast proportion of the audience related to him and found his bigotry and anger at a changing world admirable and affable, which was doubly unfortunate because the movie was a smash hit. Even though the movie came out in 1981, when I was in high school I still heard people my age quoting some of the 'funny' bigoted lines at some of the other students, without any hint of irony. Telling kids with long hair to get a damn haircut and lice shampoo, things like that. Falardeau made two late sequels where he tried to drive the point of the character home, having him literally inflate with shit and explode in the ending of the third one, but I still think he went to his grave knowing he'd accomplished the opposite of what he set out to do with that character.
