To me, the crowning moment of this scene is the 30 seconds starting around 2:50. Will is basically eyeball-to-eyeball with the #2, #3 and #4 in command of Atlantis Cable News and he has to make the impossible call. And the best part is how Charlie Skinner - the President of ACN - trusts him to do it. He doesn’t micromanage, he doesn’t get in the way, he just lets Will make the call. That kind of trust is so rare and it is captured beautifully here, if only for Hollywood purposes.

@LY43537

@@migssby at the time mass shootings were not nearly as commonplace as they are now in the USA (often multiple mass shootings take place in a day), though they were already heartachingly common. It was still shocking to hear of shootings in what should have been normal, everyday places like a shopping market. Joey would have been part of the generation whose most salient experience of a mass shooting would have been Columbine, but our world view had not yet quite shifted to "nowhere is safe ever, don't wear light up shoes, silence your phones, run hide fight" (recall Sandy Hook took place in 2012, Gifford's shooting took place in 2011). We were also really starting to experience the opposite push of white supremacists in response to Obama becoming president in 2009 and really realizing that the absolute circus that was the Palin idiocy of 2008 was not going away (and probably one of the first of many rail ties that paved the track for media circus to completely fall into the lap of Trump). It was a time where "hope" was being starkly contrasted by people determined to annihilate it. Giffords closely mirrored the changing political landscape at that time--she was Republican, then realized her social views more aligned with fiscally conservative Democrats, and by then becoming a Democrat she ended up scrapping for her political life in the next election, which she only narrowly won. And just as we were starting to celebrate the slow change of the country towards progress the answer was then to shoot her in the head. While her shooter was deemed medically incompetent, the feeling at the time was it was a perfect metaphor for the political tug of war happening at that time. The illogical was murdering the logical. Nothing made sense. You couldn't reason with the madmen. Nine-year-old Christina-Taylor Green was declared dead at the hospital and Federal Judge John Roll along with 4 others were declared dead on scene. We--the people who think that common sense gun legislation (like they have in Australia )--were all, in a sense, related to Gifford through that naiveté, and that was shattered, and then again it was completely ground to dust during Sandy Hook. We knew then that if Sandy Hook wouldn't change the trajectory of legislation to reign in mass shootings, then nothing would. Now, we just expect it, and I'm not sure any of us not immediately impacted by mass shootings have the emotional bandwidth to cry about them anymore.

I was a floor director at the NBC affiliate in north Texas when President Ronald Ragan was shot in March 1981, and it was a freaking chaotic frenzy to be the first to air what was coming to us before our competitors did. We were breaking into shows repeatedly, shots were fired but everyone is OK, the president has been shot, no he has not been shot but an aid was shot, yes he is shot but he is fine, no the president is not fine. Two month later we would do the same routine when the Pope was shot. Yes, the real news outlets and news reporter try to be as accurate as possible, but in the moment of a crisis, I don't know, I guess our minds go out the window. I guess it is, "Get the news out there and correct it later." At least real reporters and the real news outlets will correct information when they miss the mark.

Thanks for the insight! I can't imagine the insanity a real newsroom goes through when a world shaking even occurs. I can understand the panic and frenzy along with the need to keep the public as informed as possible, and I don't think Newsroom is saying real news organizations should be infallible, but rather that news organizations always need to strive to be better. For example, the issue in the above wasn't just the risk of getting it wrong after having semi-reliable, albeit later confirmed incorrect, sources. It was that they felt the need to risk being wrong and pronouncing a person dead for business motives rather than a good faith belief that Representative Giffords was deceased. I don't think the public is demanding perfection, but rather that we can rest assured that everyone on staff did fulfilled their moral and ethical obligation to get it as right as they possibly could.

For those that haven't seen the show or episode, it starts with the premise that McKenzie (Mac) wants to turn around the Newsroom, anchored by Will (Jeff Daniels) - dropping the facade, and simply reporting the news correctly, without overhyping controversies or skipping due diligence for views. Don was portrayed as the antithesis to these morals and a minor antagonist... right up until ^this moment. From this moment on, and especially in Season 2, his character improves massively, becoming (IMO) one of the best characters on the show.

I've seen the entirety of West Wing three times through and I still think this is Sorkin's best work ever. I don't care how much blow he snorted, or how studios got control of him afterwards. I just don't care. I just want to see the best-written stories ever, and this very well might be it.

I came back here from listening to the song. But I would expect nothing less from the brilliant Arron Sorkin. Now it is time to watch this series again, along with West Wing. As compared to the drivel that is on TV today these series are worth watching again.,

Why they cancelled this show I'll never understand. This show is everything Ameria needs today. It gave you the news, but didn't try to tell you how to feel about it. In the pilot episode and the Deepwater Horizon incident all the news talked about was the dead men (and yes that's horrible) but the effects of the environmental disaster is still being felt today in 2024. Again when they covered the Bin Laden assassination, they handled it brilliantly with Don telling the airline pilots that our seal team killed Osama for THEM. Because airline pilots to this day have trauma and protocols put in place for what happened that fateful day. This show was brilliant.

I scream “feet of fucking steel” all the time because it’s just such a great line. That line, and “you’re a fuckin’ newsman Don…” are lines I use all the time for any reason. Sorkin really was too good as a screenwriter. Too skilled and too smart but as someone who worked for a few years in a cable newsroom, he got the dialogue just right. We used to talk about this show all the time in our newsroom at the time.

This show had so many amazing moments. The one that ALWAYS gets me is when Will starts telling Mac about the university question and she flips open to the notes she wrote in the audience ... I get chills every. fucking. time. "It was you?" "Yep." ... "It was you?" ".... yep." God, just amazing writing and acting culminating in a scene that I hope to have something even half as magical with a girl I fall in love with.

If you liked Jeff Daniels in the Newsroom you’ll love him in the Netflix show GODLESS. It’s a western unlike and make before or since. Everybody does cameos but Bridges is in every chapter.

This is pretty close to the only scene in the series I don't think is fair to news studios. The only reason they can have the balls to wait is because we know she didn't die. In all other spots if everyone calls something, they call it too.

I fucking love Aaron Sorkin's writing. I know, it's biased, it's unreal, but fuck it, this was one of the greatest shows that I've ever seen
