Ok has to be done, evern if it's guesses....but when do you all think we'll see Booster 10 lifted on to the OLM. Ship 28 is likely to roll first for IFT-3 (I'm assuming it's B10/S28 for the next flight) and then Booster 10. So OLM readiness in play. Post your guesses on a date we'll see a booster back on the mount!

I am humbled by the success of this launch and the configuration I vehemently argued would never work without a classic flame deflector or trench. Saturday's launch was a spectacular sight. The blue, Mach cone filled plume behind the booster was enormous and so impressive. I don't understand why there is so much focus online about the boost back burn being terminated or the loss of Starship in its last minute of flight. The flight was incredibly successful. The triple flame aurora exiting the hot stage ring at staging was a remarkable sight and, while most were watching the booster turn around, lose engines and be commanded to destruct, Starship with 6 engines burning bright kept going into space for more than 5 additional minutes flawlessly. This flight was way beyond my wildest expectations and the nabobs of negativity, of which I was one before the flight, should shift their attention to the terrific successes achieved by this test flight. It was amazingly awesome!

Hot staging wasn't introduced because of issues with flight 1, it was planned even before that and it has the advantage of significantly increasing performance by avoiding a few seconds of time where no engines are firing and the rocket is just falling back down to earth. During the launch I understood that the hold down clamps for this rocket are released a couple of minutes before launch. Does it just fly away once the trust is higher than the weight? Falcon9 is held down a short while using hold down clamps until the engines are at full trust, and only then are they released...
@bongi6811
10 ай бұрын
In the last few minutes before liftoff it has only gravity holding it down, but that is a very strong force as it's almost fully fueled at that point and weighs a few thousand tonnes. During the engine ignition they first remain on a low throttle setting which isn't enough to overcome gravity, before liftoff is performed by throttling the engines up.
@Rob2
10 ай бұрын
@@bongi6811 Sure the gravity holds it down very well, but I always thought the clamps were there to make the engines throttle up to full thrust so the proper trust/weight ratio is available to immediately lift the rocket off the pad once the clamps are released, instead of having a short period when the thrust matches the weight and the whole thing may become unstable. Maybe these engines throttle up faster than the RP1 engines on Falcon9, so this isn't necessary? Even Saturn5 had those clamps.
@bongi6811
10 ай бұрын
@@Rob2 There are of course disadvantages and advantages to doing it either way, but I think Starship has a few properties that make this kind of liftoff possible or even advantageous. Raptor can throttle low enough to make all of this possible in the first place, but at full thrust it's also powerful enough to give the full stack a very high TWR, even higher than falcon 9 and much higher than Saturn 5. Since it also throttles up and down decently fast as it's designed to perform some crazy maneuvers there shouldn't be much unstable hovering. If anything, SpaceX want it to get out of the OLM as early as possible to reduce stress on the pad and a slower beginning to that movement gives the arms that the booster sits on more time to retract into the OLM ring. On other rockets this seems to have less advantages and more problems, falcon 9 for example could be unstable during high winds since it's a lighter and less wide rocket and subjecting the pad to as little stress as possible isn't as important with a many times less powerful rocket. Saturn 5 could have hovered to long as its TWR, even at full thrust was just 1.2 or there might have been problems with throttling the F1 engines that low.

So, im wondering what improvements and/or standby parts they will need to have in place to be able to do rapid launching of multiple starships. With stage 1 returning to the chop sticks eventually, it will make for difficult repairs if and when they are needed.
@gravelydon7072
10 ай бұрын
That is part of the reason for a second OLM to be built. With two at KSC. I would bet that there will be an uptick in work at KSC after the New Year. They know the deluge plate works. They know the OLM itself works. They know the tower works. They know that the Booster is good for launches. And after the next OFT they will likely know that the Starship can fly. All the rest of that is just getting everything upgraded and right. We may soon see Raptor 3.0 engines on the booster as they are better at burning the fuel. Now they just need to figure out how to control the slosh of the fuel in the Booster.
