I'm in Marquette Michigan which has a huge Cornish population that came over to mine in the late 1800s. They brought all of the Cornish foods and customs! We eat pasty and call each other pard! And all the names start with Tre, Pol and Pen! I'm a proud Cornish American.

I was born in Mexico, my grandparents, both of them were born at Camborne, they came to Mexico to work in the silver mines of "real del monte" I have been several times at UK, but never at Camborne, I wish to be there sometime trying to find some relatives! That could be awesome!

My great great grandmother from Cornwall was so adamant her children be Cornish, that even though she was living in California -where they had emigrated- she still traveled around the Cape Horn 7 times, to and from Cornwall while pregnant, so her children could be born in Kernow!! That’s 14 bleddy trips around the Cape while bleddy pregnant or just after!! As my Mum/Mom says, they were hearty folks!! Come to Grass Valley and Nevada City here in California and meet all yer Cornish Cousins!!

I'm from Helston and I remember when I was young an old boy told me that the crimping was used so the miners could hold it without spoiling the pasty because of the minerals and dirt on their hands. Also, some of the original pasty had pilchards in them.

I’ve heard the same here in California, and my gold mining ancestors didn’t eat the parts of the crimping that they touched because cinnabar mercury ore was on their hands (used to process the gold) and they knew not to eat mercury even then! Ha!!

Was told that they put blackberries or anything in season in the bottom of the pasty. Nice to see someone try it! Especially with abit of clotted cream, nice one

I always heard that pasties were often made half savoury and half sweet. Also the crust was so the miners could hold it when their hands were dirty. Bleddy rich 😀
