At one time, it was. Hens had value because they kept producing food (eggs) but cockerels (neutered males, where the chicken we eat comes from) weren't something that could be had often unless you were rich. Feeding them up for slaughter was expensive when you could only get at most a couple meals out of them. Only the rich and nobility could afford to keep enough of them fed year round to have them as dinner on a regular occasion. This didn't actually change until the Great Depression, when FDR ran on a platform of "A chicken in every pot" which was scandalously luxurious back then. He built the first modern chicken farming industry in the world in the United States after election and the rest is history. Delicacies have been known to change. Such as escargot--at one time it was peasant food because it was easy to find edible snails, or lobster, which used to be very numerous and easy to catch. Rarity made them delicacies.

@@kettch777 Everything you wrote reminds me of my grandfather taking me to the "butcher" (in this case it was a literal butcher where they actually killed the animals). I was about 4-1/2 (1952 or so) in Brooklyn, NY. When we got there, there were cages upon cages of live chickens lined up and my grandfather told me to pick one, which I did. I had no idea they were going to kill the bird and that we would have it the next day for Sunday dinner. Chicken was still not as common as nowadays. You're also correct about lobster, escargot and salmon which, during the 10th and 11th centuries in England, was considered "peasant" food and the nobles wouldn't eat it even if they were starving.

The Krill are such a good mash-up of all of Star Trek's recurring "villains". They have: - The religiosity of the Jem'Hadar - The warlike spirit of the Klingons - The scheming and patriotism of the Romulans - The xenophobia (and patriotism) of the Cardassians - The business oriented society of the Ferengi. (They were friendlier in DS9, but an attempt at recurring villains in TNG)

@@ilmistico90 My logic was that Romulans and Cardassians are both very patriotic. However, Romulans are generally depicted as political schemers. Meanwhile, Cardassians have a strong xenophobic tendancy as depicted in the "Empok Nor" episode where survivors of the 3rd Battalion of the 1st order are infected by some form of virus that exacerbates their tendancies and that Garak becomes infected too. But then again, Cardassians have been depicted as schemers too, and Romulans as xenophobic.
@ilmistico90

@@maaderllin Romulans are more xenophobic and isolationist, so much so that no one knew their appearance and that they were similar to Vulcans. While Cardassians are very open, they study customs and traditions that they integrate into their society. Then of course they consider themselves a superior race but they are not to be considered xenophobic, on Empok Nor it was the drug that made xenophobic and violent. Of note, the Cardassians are those who submitted to the Dominion an "interstellar state and military superpower from the Gamma Quadrant, composed of hundreds of dominated alien species." Xenophobes don't make these choices.

I have to check out Orville soon. From what little I've seen of it it seems like they captured the essence of what Star Trek was up until DS9 (though I did enjoy Voyager). Perhaps with a bit more humor and a few satirical pokes at the genre, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It can be great, even, when balanced right. TNG managed to balance humor and seriousness very well after all and pretty much every trekkie will agree that TNG was peak 'Trek. Though I personally didn't like how Worf was constantly ragdolled even though he was supposed to be stronger, tougher and the more competent fighter than most any human but the most elite. It made all his bluster about being a proud, klingon warrior seem like empty boasting. I loved it when they got into the philosophy of a warrior with him though. Trek was and is supposed to be the thinking mans' sci-fi. Which necessitates employing writers and directors that are thinking men (and women, thank you Loretta). The woke dunces and adult children they employed in making Discovery didn't so much ran the franchise into the ground as took it out back and shot it with their abysmal inanity.

This isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I feel like the Orville has been 'pulling its punches' when it comes to jokes this season. It's simply less funny in my opinion. This scene is a good example; it's funnier if the drink is horrifying; either they all spit it out and act disgusted, or you can tell they're struggling not to vomit and pretend they enjoy it (like Mercer and the admiral gritting their teeth, maybe someone else dumping into an alien plant pot). The running joke should be all alien food is horrifically disgusting because of course it would be, so every scene they have to eat or drink something it's always a nightmare, and that's the joke. This is just one example, but I could probably name a bunch of scenes from this season where you can see where the joke would be, but they swerve away from it. It doesn't make the show more dramatic or serious though, just 'flatter'.

@@Mikewee777 The fact that Star Trek did it at some point is irrelevant; the Orville is a comedy, and part of the joke is that it's running; the food is always horrible to humans. At one point this season it's straight up worldbreaking; when Kelly eats with Bortus and his husband and says "Oh I like spicy food", it's absurd. The Moclan diet is insane; they eat rocks and metal and garbage. Their 'spicy food' should basically be hydrochloric acid to her, and the camera just pans out while she calmly eats her meal.
