The Overbrook Asylum, originally known as the Essex County Asylum for the Insane, was built in 1896 and would operate continuously all the way up until 2007. Located near Cedar Grove, New Jersey, it would ultimately become known as the Essex County Hospital and, at its height, it would house over 3,000 patients. This is its story.
And I want to apologize here because chances are quite strong that some pictures of the Mountain Sanatorium, located right next to Overbrook's campus, errantly snuck into the production of this video. Over the area's history, there has long been much confusion about the two facilities lying almost directly adjacent to each other. So while I did my best to ensure that accurate images, both historic and more modern, were selected for the production of this video, please forgive me for any failures along these lines that may have occurred.
This video has been produced by the mentally ill, for the mentally ill, and for all others that might have any type of interest within them. It is strictly a not-for-profit production.
