A surrealist piece in Europe, a regular day in the United States

Fun fact, France actually did still sentence murderers to death by guillotine when this film was made. France's last guillotine execution happened three years after this film's release.

I first saw this, I think, in '79. I remember we were all laughing at the absurdity. It was released in '74. Only recently did I learn of the Texas University Tower incident which had occurred in '66, eight years earlier. Today, I am somewhat more disturbed by it. But perhaps it's time to watch the whole film again?

For my part, it is not easy to understand this professionally-filmed scenario. It's not just because I don't speak fluent anything except Midwestern English. I like Don Luis because he is blunt and, to date, that's ok with the present day

It's cool that Don Luis was allowed full access to this real estate, the streets, the courtroom, all in order to support this creative project. The scenario has commonality with Mr Charles Whitman's long-range weapons + demonstrable brain anomalies Here, however, this gent was given a free pass out of jail. It's darkly funny that, recently, Mr Rittenhouse was also set free by a straight-up courtroom process and magistrate.

He was attacked by multiple assailants and his effective "by the book" procedural-like dispatching of them all proves that he wanted to place himself into dangerous situation where he could test his military-like fire and movement training without breaking the law, i.e. under modern means of surveillance and recording technology available to anyone. He demonstrated what military training does to the type of person who is the military type - cold, detatched, with lower affective empathy, low anxiousness, high tolerance to stress, high self discipline and with the ability to think clearly and make rational decisions under stress. Against the real military professionals armed population doesn't stand a chance - yet US are militarized and violent. Did he had the intent to kill - it's not easy to conclusively prove, but he was very skilled at self defense, fire discipline, tactical movement and positioning.

It's not supposed to be funny, but about surreal juxtaposition. Buñuel was a Surrealist and nearly all of his movies do contain Surrealistic plots or references. He was also the filmmaker who made Un Chien Andalou together with Salvador Dali...
