The Pilgrim State Hospital was built and opened in 1931. At its height, the hospital had a patient population of 13,975 and employed 4,000 employees, making it both the largest hospital in the world at that time and the largest hospital to have ever been built in all of the years and decades since. And while significant portions of the hospital and it's sprawling campus have been shut down, abandoned, sold, and repurposed, the Pilgrim State Hospital, now the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, remains in operation to this very day. This is its story.
