There's no reason to have men this old running our country; most people stop driving past this age, so how do we trust them to be of sound enough mind to correspond with other world leaders, esp now in a time where tensions are rising more than ever? 2. on a HUMAN/FAMILIAL LEVEL, these men should be spending time with their loved ones. To use your final years to be in such a stressful position is CRAZY, they need to retire and go HUG THEIR FAMILY??? GO REST SIRS. I couldn't imagine my pawpaw debating on geopolitics at his age of 82, he's got other stuff to worry about - like sleep and eat THE MAN HAS LIVED A FULL LIFE THAT TUCKERS YA OUT???? Had to stop and do a(n unfruitful) search to figure out which Alan Moore issue you got. Why? Because my dad worked on Swamp Thing, and it always makes me happy when people show interest in it. Most of my Dad's work is from before Alan Moore's time, but he penciled and/or inked a few issues from that era and contributed several covers. And he was generally around during that time and knows all those artists. Going by the art style on the cover of your issue, I would guess that that's either John Totelben or Steve Bissette; the former of whom is actually legally blind now, but he has enough vision intact to keep doing art, albeit at a slower rate. I'm two questions in, and sure of one thing: This is not a debate. For Trump, it is an opportunity to sermonize to the followers of his "I'm A Great Man of History" cult, featuring the humiliation of his opponent and the rationization of constraints upon him as oppression. For Biden, it is an effort to rally rational people to the reality that Trump is more catastrophic than Biden in the face of Trump's masterclass in bully-gaslighting. This is not a debate; this is a bad reinterpretation of Picard saying "four lights."

@PyrrhicPax
Күн бұрын
@@PetalsandGems yes, I do see problem in your framing. #1) This IS a debate. Literally. #2) No, this is not an opportunity for Trump to sermonize to his followers. He ALREADY has those opportunities. This is broadcast of mainstream media, where the bulk of the audience are undecided voters and political adversaries...it is not social media or existing political structures, where his followers would reliably be found. In fact, most established supporters DONT EVEN WATCH DEBATES, they listen to people who watched them in their little echo chambers. #3) Since your entire premise is already false, the over-articulation of it is ridiculous. #4) You broke your own veneer of intellectualism by using the word "effort" instead of "opportunity". #5) it's ridiculous to refer Trump's debate tactics as "masterclass in bully-gaslighting" because 5A) Trump's strategy for bullying is just name calling and denialism, which any elementary school kid can do. So to refer to it as "masterclass" is ridiculous or ignorant. 5B) you don't know what the word gaslight means. Trump is just lying and those lies can be easily fact checked. To gaslight someone is a specific kind of lying in which you try to convince someone to question themselves or their reality. He's not trying to convince anyone that they themselves are an unreliable source of knowledge, he's just lying. #6) if you really wanted to maintain your illusion of intellect a more articulate phrase would have been "Trump has a developed a reputation for deception". #7) Again, this IS a debate. The allusion to Star Trek was another unnecessary and ridiculous attempt at feigned philosophizing. I made no effort to personal attacks, I don't know you, I only know your ridiculous comments, but if you take it personally I don't blame you.
@PetalsandGems
Күн бұрын
@@PyrrhicPax Okay, cool. Thank you for a mostly-clean list of points. I'll respond because--and I think we agree here--my rhetoric could use the exercise. I take it as a personal comment, because you said that I am "trying too hard to sound smart and it's backfiring." Which, without context, sounds just as much like "hur hur ur dumb lol" as it does "hey your purple passages constipate your prose." That's the extent of my style advice to you; the rest of this is me practicing and feel free to ignore it or not at leisure. @1) A debate, this was not, and putting the word "debate" in the title doesn't make it so. "How was it not a debate" is a great question you didn't address, and I answer it with the absence of discernable propositions argued for or against. I believe I heard none, precisely because the felon did as you say with his rhetoric and no one stopped him; Biden also avoided engaging these, albeit less relentlessly than did Trump. If there were such propositions, the two men would have taken turns stating clear positions or beliefs, and then arguing for or against those; what we got instead was "I veto abotion bans and he won't" from one, and five minutes of refusing to say yes or no about honoring an election from the other. That IS rhetoric; it is not debate. @2 If this wasn't a debate, but it very much WAS rhetoric, then what was it all for? I think we answer that by how it is used. And how is it used? In sound bites. And highlight reels. All edited to hell in order to show those ten seconds out of two hours in which either particpant did an act of rhetoric cherished by their side, while facing off against their side's hated enemy. It acheives some myth-reinforcing acts, and little else. Sure, this is a pretty strict lens of linguistic pragmatics I'm looking at this with, and there are other lenses to evaluate this by. But that by itself doesn't invalidate my points nor make them useless as heuristics, for the candidates and for us. @3 This may sound dumb but, if you remember your truth tables from the intro to logic class I'm sure we both took, you will recall that an if-then statement with a false premise is always true. I know it's weird, but you don't have to trust me on it. Just watch a three-minute truth tables video here on KZitem. ;) 4) I don't recall trying to be anything I'm not. This is literally just me talking here. Sure, I'm being a little more focused and deliberate than usual, but I think that is because I am trying to make sense of stuff and learn things. I could be wrong; people self-report inaccurately all the time. But this is kind of thinking and speech are pretty normal for me, I think. @5 yay, subsections! :) I disagree. For me, what separates Trump's BS game from your average grade-schooler's comes down to pace and stamina. Trump seems from all accounts I've heard to just be like this, all the time, with everyone about everything. He never stalls out on more BS to utter, and refuses pause and self-reflection the way ascetics famously refuse sleep, shelter and sustinance. It's a brute art, to be sure, but the fact of his obvious ceaseless despration forces genius out of him in this most crass, train-wreck way. So. @5a The grade-schooler, by contrast, gets tired and still has plenty of room to grow into something of a non-bully through coaching, nourishment, and active reparenting of oneself. Is it ridiculous? Sure. I'll take that. It may also be very not right. What it most definitely is, however, is not wrong. Y'all can tell me what that makes me ignorant of. 5b) I don't think you've noticed what Trump's lying does to those who hear him; may I recommend the CPAC videos by our very own dead domains here, to see that? What I take away from years of watching this all go down with the rest of you, is that Trump's lies create and reinforce a whole alternate reality to believe in, in which Trump is right, the non-believers are all against him, and a day of reckoning is coming soon for a corrupt government-corporate-non-believer near you. Because Trump is not doing politics; Trump is running a messianic cult in both the religious studies and highly-coercive-groups senses of that phrase. Biden, by contrast, has not taken that leap, and the DNC's heads keep killing off anything better than trying to copy Trump in this respect: instead of the pro-Trump fanatics, they're the anti-Trump fanatics, and until they define an ethos of being *for* something, that is all they can be. Bringing it back to Trump's lies, we cannot count them. Worse, we cannot formalize them into propositions we can prove to be true or false. And he achieves this, because he lies so deeply that everything he says is unintelligible except when read as a mysticism for despairing, disillusioned and socially-pathetic rejects. (Yes, I count myself among his scams' target audience; there but for the golden grace go I.) 6) Please destroy my illusions of intellect. Pretty-pretty please. 7) You literally already said this. That torture scene is also a decent map of both candidates rhetorical strategies done in a much more watchable and informative way than either candidate performed last night, imho. It's called a metaphor, pal. We, like, use them to make sense of things that would otherwise remain beyond our grasp? See how I just used that exact kind of transition from literal to metaphoric to do that exact thing in a commonly accepted way in the context of modern English? I do see you mirroring my use of repetition to bookend my points as a stylistic choice though, so thanks for the compliment. And I admit that, though you have insulted my words, my ideas, my reasoning, and my ability to distinguish them from myself, you have not spoken a word of ill about me. Therefore, I cannot say, "tu literally quoque." I can only turn to your words, your ideas, your reasoning and your own discernment, and say of these: Tu literally quoque. Thanks for the occasion to practice.

@@hunterrandy That's not factually correct, Trump banned transgender troops from openly serving in the U.S. military. In July 2017 he tweeted, "Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming ... victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail." His decision was not one about the financial costs, and more had to do with politics . RAND corporation found, "Using private health insurance claims data to estimate the cost of extending gender transition-related health care coverage to transgender personnel indicated that active-component health care costs would increase by between $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually, representing a 0.04- to 0.13-percent increase in active-component health care expenditures." RAND corporation also found that trans troops make up around 2,450 of the 1.3 million active-component service members. According to Politico, the House Republicans who went to Trump reportedly threatened to torpedo plans for more military spending and funding for the wall at the US-Mexico border if Trump didn't comply.

@@hunterrandyIn 2017 the Trump administration rescinded transgender protections for kids in federally funded schools. That reversed a guidance from the Obama administration that asked publicly funded K-12 schools to respect and protect trans students' rights, including their ability to use the bathroom and locker room that align with their gender identity.

@@PyrrhicPax RFK just mathematically cannot win. I understand that “lesser of two evils” sucks and I hate that I will have to vote for Biden, but every halfway reasonable person who wastes their vote on RFK just increases the odds of Trump winning which is just far and away the worst option.
