So few women on rock radio these days. There were so many more in the '90s. Even our local radio station that plays '90s alternative (along with a huge amount of butt rock and nu metal) never plays any Hole, Breeders, Alanis Morissette, etc. The only time I've heard a female singer on that station is "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence, and it still has that ridiculous male rap part.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I came across a video one day saying that FM stations are dying out especially when you can just get in your car and connect your phone to Bluetooth and listen to Spotify or iTunes or whatever. It felt like in the 80s and 90s the radio was really cool and then I want to say like mid to late 90s is when I could tell with especially certain rock stations that it felt like certain companies on those stations or the parent companies of the labels also on the stations . I graduated high school in 99 and in the year 2000 I took a job as a land surveyor so I’m in a work truck with a crew and we’re driving all over America. We were based out of Raleigh, North Carolina, but we for real traveled everywhere coast to coast . This was before the days of all the music being online and most guys in the truck to keep everyone happy you were pretty safe with a rock station that played current and classic rock. in the early 2000s they seemed like there was more variety but by the mid 2000s my God, especially in Raleigh I can tell you even though it was 20 years ago what they played every hour. 96.1 in Raleigh every hour : Creed song AC/DC : Back In Black A Nickelback song Guns N Roses : Paradise City Another creed song AC/DC: Hells Bells Another Nickelback song Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit . And they would throw in two other random bands to kind of fill it out, but I kid you not every hour on 96.1 in Raleigh North Carolina. They played those same songs every hour for like eight years. I don’t even know why they overdid it with Guns N’ Roses and AC/DC, I like those bands. I actually bought their albums, but it’s not like they were new. It’s not like appetite for destruction was struggling to go platinum. I really did not understand it. Creed and Nickelback I completely understood the radio People were being paid by the labels to just play Creed and Nickelback 24 times a day. The nirvana one I didn’t get either I mean nirvana weren’t even abandoned anymore by that point. It’s kind of messed up because when that station started yes they played all those bands, but they would maybe play three creed songs a day in a 24 hour day. Once the truck got Ced players in them, we stopped listening to the rock stations. It became too much.

I’m not surprised old bands hold on to radio, because old people listen to the radio. Nobody under 30 has voluntarily turned on a radio in their entire life, ever. Radio listeners are exclusively over 30, and most are over 45. It’s more surprising that they’ve accepted some of these newer bands than anything to me.

I even have SiriusXM and the Octane channel is painfully repetitive sometimes. So it’s not just “regular” radio that is overplaying these bands/songs. I’ve had to switch to Liquid Metal to get more variety, and I don’t like the music they play as much.

I live in Austin and our radio sucks for hard rock/metal. I live in south Austin so when I listened to radio I could occasionally pick up the rock station from San Antonio. The only two rock stations in Austin are a classic rock station and an alternative rock station. I don’t mind the classic rock station but it’s just your standard classic rock station. The alternative station used to me cool but one the modest mouse era started, all they play is indie rock. You used to hear bob marley beastie boys sublime, grunge, 311, etc. I guess it outgrew me. I just think they need to market their station differently. They used to do metal for a whole hour of metal on Friday nights. Austin is “the live music capitol of the world” but that doesn’t include hard rock/metal.

Shinedown’s first three albums were pretty good. You definitely know the song, “Second Chance” though Finn. Their first few albums all had a different sound. The fourth album was very produced sounding, but still wasn’t full pop. They went full on poppy for like a decade though, unfortunately. Their newest album however is actually kind of heavy lol there is fucking sweep picking and chugging on that album. Sweep picking.. in a butt rock band. Nuts.

They sell out huge arenas and the music Festival MMRBQ they are the Headliners and everyone has SD shirts. They put on fantastic shows Brent Smith is one of the best vocalist in rock and sounds great live. There music helps people who have depression or drug & alcohol addiction. They sing about real stuff it comes from Brent's heart & soul. They give money to charities and are sponsors for Suicide Prevention. They have 3 generations of families that come to shows and life long fans they are Shinedown Nation. Philly in PA loves them and also Boston loves them. Rock radio around here is just the latest songs from legacy and (somewhat) newer bands (I.E Shinedown, Pop Evil, FFDP, Greta Van Fleet, Ghost, Theory) mixed in with the typical 90's/early 2000's Linkin Park, Green Day, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Godsmack, Chevelle, Puddle Of Mudd, Staind, Seether, Three Days Grace, Disturbed, Audioslave, ect. hits. I legit hear "In The End", "Numb", "Runaway" (Which I don't even think was a single), "What I've Done", "Burn It Down", "Awake", "Straight Out Of Line", "Love-Hate-Sex-Pain", "Bulletproof", "Fake It", "Words As Weapons", "Sound of Madness", "Bully", "How Did You Love", "Control", "Blurry", "She Hates Me", "Psycho", "Send The Pain Below", "It's Been Awhile", "I Hate Everything About You", "The Mountain", "Are You Ready", "Like A Stone", "In Bloom", "Even Flow", "Time Of Your Life", and the DREAFUL "RX (Medicate)" on a weekly basis. Kinda shocked that "Surrender" by Godsmack didn't make it on the list, But it's probably a little too recent. (It'll be there next year though, Along with any other Godsmack single)

Over here in the U.K. we have national radio stations, and you won’t get anything like this on U.K. radio. We do get local radio stations but local radio stations tend to just be talk radio, if you want to listen to music it’s mostly on national stations. The heaviest Rock station we have is called Kerrang, but they mostly play to the Emo and PoP Punk crowd, so if you want to pretend it’s 2008 then Kerrang is for you. We have stations called Radio X and Absolute that brand themselves as “Alternative stations” when they really are not, they mostly play British Indie PoP music, 80’s New Wave, and the odd Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Nirvana and Green Day song. So if you’re a British builder in your 40’s or 50’s, then Radio X and Absolute are for you to hear artists such as Jake Bugg, Sam Fender, and Lewis Capaldi, while getting paint on your radio. We have modern PoP and R&B stations a plenty, we also have a station called Heart that are for middle aged Mums/Moms that play both modern PoP and Retro PoP. And we have Boomer stations a plenty, including Magic and Greatest Hits that play Disco, Motown, and 80’s New Wave. So if you don’t like BritPoP, Indie PoP, 80’s New Wave, modern PoP and R&B, Disco, Motown, or even Emo or PoP Punk, then British isn’t for you nor me. So I find it funny you Yanks call Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Seether, Alter Bridge, as mainstream radio Rock when over here in the U.K. we get none of that on the radio. Boomers and Gen Xers in the U.K. are very nationalist when it comes to music, it’s got to be British music first to anyone born Pre 1985.

Oh man, totally, I mean 3 Days Grace are such an unknown in the UK for the most part, so crazy to see how popular they are in the US. we do also have Planet Rock, which honestly I do listen too from time to time as I grew up on Boomer rock and tbh, do like a lot of, but Kerrang Radio was the only time we kinda had a mainstream rock station here in the UK, I know its still on the Internet buy there's nowt anymore. God I have to listen to Heart (shudders, the Mom energy is too strong) and Greatest Hits at work (funnily enough, it's on the old Kerrang! Radio signal here in Brum, 105.2)

Rock Radio at night (I am talking LATE. Around 10:30 P.M. to around 4:00 A.M.) is actually pretty good. They played some Gojira and Killswitch Engage one time and I was surprised. I mean most of the bands (Gojira & Killswitch included) are a bit more mainstream than most of the bands in the genre, but it's still better than the typical shit that they play OVER & OVER again.

Radio rock was really important during the Butt Rock genesis of the 2000's. Many of us suburban white kids heard lamb of God, shinedown or three days grace during the morning show when our mom drove us to middle school in the minivan. Once bandwidth was appropriate for streaming and cheap enough for the average consumer, that was the death knell of radio rock.

have you listened to the first two Bad Omens records? If not I really think you should because they are the furthest thing from “butt rock”. The new album is nothing like their usual sound. They’ve hustled hard to get where they are and this album just got them the traction. I think it’s well deserved and they’ve proven this time around that they’re not a band that can be compared to another or boxed into one genre. It takes an unbelievable amount of talent to do that in my opinion. Would love to see you do a video covering some of their discography and history!

I’m a total junkie when it comes to radio charts…yeah it doesn’t mean what it used to, but it’s interesting to me anyway. This list is exclusively Active Rock radio. The target demographic for Active Rock on FM radio is middle aged men who grew up on Alternative radio when Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, and the Disturbed were core artists, and hit the “Haha” reaction to any story on social media that is about Imagine Dragons, twenty one pilots, or MGK. They are set upon their ways for sure, and while I agree this list isn’t terrible, these are just 2021-2022 songs. I guarantee you their actual most played songs mostly came from the 90’s or 2000’s. They spend so little time playing actual current music. That’s my problem with “rock” radio, but I guess that’s just what the listeners want to hear.

That’s pretty much what I thought. You hear a song by Ghost or I Prevail on my local rock station, then you’re almost guaranteed to hear Skynyrd, 70s or 80s AC/DC, or even hair metal immediately following, almost as a sonic mea culpa to the older Gen Xer’s who might have been listening and considered changing the station. 😖

I disagree with saying that radio isn't important. It definitely isn't as important as it used to be for sure, but it is important for up and coming artists to break into the mainstream. Once everyone knows your name, it doesn't matter what songs you produce... you'll be on the late night talk shows and you'll have massive success. The problem is that modern rock stations do not play what the youth want to listen to and the youth demographic is the only demographic that matters in music.
@FinnMckentyPRMBA

I don't think it is, though. TikTok breaks artists - what artists have been broken by radio in the last 15 years?
@shocken90
Жыл бұрын
Yo thanks Finn for the comment! Love your channel! The youth demo is critically important therefore tik tok and social media is def more important to initially break an artist. However! Imo, radio djs can def reach out to a more established, older audience. Along with that audience comes tabloids, celeb gossip magazines ect. With that comes national name recognition. Artists should prioritize to break out on social first, but breaking out on radio can really give an artist that career defining jump bc of the other forms of media and industry attention that is comes along with it.
