That is because of dissimilar metals the brass to the Steel I know it’s not a good idea but always put pentrox or anti-seize on it

it also helps that well nuts arent meant to be cranked down until the gates of hell open up underneath of you from the force created between bolt and nut. Too much is too much sometimes. It looks more like he used phosphorus and magnesium to bind the molecules of the two metals together, rather than just screwed it on.

I think the problem is you used it on bare wood. you used the wrong length well nut. Then over tightened the well nut. try sanding, then lining the surface of the wood hole with superglue or a hard urethane finish. Anything to prevent the wood from splintering into the rubber of the well nut, then install the well nut.

Looks like your bolt was bent so getting any nut off of a bent bolt would be a challenge.

In the beginning, he says he had to pry it off the van wall because the well nut wouldn't loosen. I'd bet that's when the bolt got bent. The well nut is still the root cause of the problem. The bent bolt was merely a side effect, not the cause.

@@CheapskateGarage all speculation that it bent that way. Do you have any hard evidence that it bent that way ? Where you there ?

should've used a small pipe wrench instead of pliers to grab the other side

For one, you’re not supposed to over tighten rubber well nuts..

They were correct on this issue. The nut will seize and the rubber will break and nut will just spin with rubber. I used it on my semi to hold up a lightbar and it did the same thing. Not good for vibration on metal.

I was thinking about using these to fasten a visor to my pickup instead of the recommended sheet metal screws. The vibration damaged them?

I don’t see any rubber on the head of that screw side. So either the hole was drilled too big or over tightened?
