What I have found since I got my e-bike last year. Con e-bike, 1) Extra cost of battery, bike, and maintenance 2) Should get a spare fully charged battery and keep it with you 3) Difficulty of maintenance 4) If you get a rear hub drive handling and balance is thrown off 5) Weight of an e-bike even with the battery removed Pro's: 1) Torque for hill climbing 2) Great for commute and errand running for distances of 5 miles or less each way 3) Can sustain speed for longer time and higher gear 4) Almost a must for Sr. citizens, people with heart conditions and/or other physical conditions, and out of shape or overweight people 5) More relaxing than a conventional bike because you can pedal at an essayer pace with less effort

Great objective assessment. I agree on all points. At 71 and with reduced muscle mass from injury and age, I still wanted to ride to improve my fitness. And the ebike I purchased has been such a great help for me. I use my Vado LTD as more gravel bike and not much MTB. Loading the bikes (also bought Como for my 70 yo wife) on the rack isn't bad in the morning but can be a challenge after riding 30 miles. And I haven't seen anyone other than you mention the issue of getting the bike on the bike stand for maintenance. It can definitely be a task even with the battery removed. And you are correct in that the ebike can easily cause you to exceed your technical abilities level if you don't watch it. Ebike has allowed me to ride with my son and his MTB and at the same time shown him more interest in gravel biking. He left his older '06 Stumpjumper with me and I replaced the forks and fixed it up and have been riding it also. Now I'm considering getting myself an unassisted MTB. Thanks again for your objective reviews. Just subscribed. I hardly ever use turbo mode. Using no assistance for downhill and mostly Eco when riding assisted. You can definitely get a cardio workout.

With relatively few exceptions, anyone not healthy enough to use a regular mountain bike should not make up for that by using an e-bike. People underestimate how dangerous mountain biking is and the extent to which you can be injured and killed. I fully endorse and support e-bikes on the road, on the bike path and in the park and maybe even for help climbing mountain bike trails. That is all well and good. Also, I have lost over 50 lbs using my e-bike so I am abosuly doing a lot of work on the climbs even in eco. I will never go back to a traditional bike. Hosting my e-bike onto the rack is not an issue. You sound totally against e-bikes. I have done the same maintanince on my e-bike as my Amish bike so I don't know why you are so against the e-bike. Good informational video for the most part. The only things that I disagree with is 4:16. eMTB are not motorcycles; Department of transportation of United States does not recognize mid drive units as motors, for the very reason that they are not capable of self propelling. Reason for which you are not required to have license to operate it. Only the fact that you are initially required to pedal your eMTB makes is fundamentally different from a motorized vehicle.

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on EMTBs. Some of your cons can be eliminated by purchasing a half power EMTB such as the Specialized Levo SL which I currently ride. It is much lighter and rides just like a regular FS MTB. I have a 2018 Giant Anthem Advanced FS that I rode in Tallahassee and elsewhere in Florida, GA, NC, until I moved to Albuquerque for a job promotion. While I found lots of trails here on which to ride my Giant, there were also lots of trails I avoided due to not wanting to ride uphill. I am 58 and despite being very physically active my entire life, to include a career in the Army, I never have had the heart/lung capacity others seemed to have to process oxygen into my bloodstream. Genetics I guess. So the Levo SL has been a great addition to my life. It has opened up so many more trails to me and I have been riding more during the spring, summer, fall. Here in New Mexico, my favorite trails are snowed over in winter so I ski instead. I have run into lots of EMTB riders on the trails in Albuquerque. All were like me, experienced riders who got older and did not want to struggle uphill anymore. I have not yet run into anyone riding outside their skill level due to being on a EMTB. I think that is attributable to the co$t of EMTBs. To buy one, you really are likely to be an experienced serious MTB rider, not some newbie. Yes, the assistance levels do take some finessing thru trial and error to find your perfect settings when climbing on a techish section but it is far from an obstacle as you figure it out pretty fast. I rarely use Turbo setting on my Levo SL, so was surprised to hear you used it so often in Florida. I mainly use Eco and the medium Trail mode with Intermittent Turbo on some brief very steep sections on trails I have done thus far. My only issue with the Levo SL is that it's a 29er. Yes, I know you have done a video on this topic. I prefer 27.5 like my Giant. I expect in a couple of years EMTB will offer more in 27.5 which us shorter (5'3") riders prefer.

I agree, over in the UK we don't seem to have your issues as there are very few non pedal assist bikes. The ones I have seen have usually been kits and on Pizza Delivery bikes so kids are doing that when they couldn't ride a moped. Also our pedal assist cuts out at 25 kph /15.5 mph and they qualify as a normal pedal cycle so can be used in parks etc where there is a cycleway shared path and obviously all the trails forest roads etc. I sometimes which the cut out was higher as it kills my asthma when the assist disappears and the drag is worse than a non ebike. But I see your reviewers like ours rarely mention the drag when not being assisted. Hope it gets sorted for you guys as it would be a shame if all ebikes get banned from the trails, but equally bad if the trails get opened up to non pedal assist too. At the moment I don't think a pedal assist is really coming downhill much faster than a non ebike. Its the flat bits and up hill that's different and the throttle only guys with big motors will be wanting to overtake on the flat and its the disparity in speed that causes the incidents.

After decades of riding conventional bikes, my wife and I now own 4 e-bikes. Two daily riders for fitness riding, plus one e-cargo bike and one "back-up" e-bike. Three are Bosch Performance Line and one is Shimano E-8000. I use them due a physical limitation and my wife to keep up. We have a combined 15,000+ miles on the e-bikes. Firstly, no issues with the motors at all. However, many issues with "connectivity", meaning a connection problem with either the bike's display unit or the Rohloff E-14 (on two bikes). A connection problem shuts you down - either the motor won't boot, or no electronic shifting. We love, love, love our Rohloffs, but the E-14 is not perfected as of yet. (Hence, we bought a "back-up" bike for the down time.) You will find derailleur e-bikes are more reliable and shift quicker - but feel very primitive after you get used to the Rohloff E-14. Our batteries show absolutely no degradation after hundreds of rides. That includes being subjected to many days over 100F, here in Southern Arizona. Modern Lithium Ion batteries are good for a thousand cycles - and we typically only use about 50% of the battery in a 20 mile daily ride. We ride about 100 miles per week. Paradigm shifts when riding an e-bike. Weight is much less of an issue, and a hunched over riding position on drop bars, is no longer needed to prevent getting brutalized in a head wind. I would not buy a drop bar e-bike. Do know that in some cases old school roadies will verbally assault you for riding an e-bike - calling you out for "cheating". As if cycling can only be a competition. This is especially upsetting to my wife.

Videos are always great, but the one pro that didn't get much attention is the human aging factor. Old people don't ride MTB, mature people do. I say that in jest, but science just tells you that you simply don't have the leg torque you once had. So when you're in your late 60's it's all about getting to the top of every ascent as fast as possible, so that you can enjoy the rest of the trail riding as fast as possible....instead of pacing yourself to catch your breath to the next ascent. Like my wife said, maybe you need to slow down instead of buying pads. My response...what's the point.

I'm not sure its been pointed out in the comments as there are so many comments but this video is written with regard a mid-drive motor with hub motors they actually massively extend the life of chains and cassettes as hill climbing is now assisted with the power not delivered through the chain. Also you can spin the crankset backwards without issue. They are much simpler and more reliable but they typically don't provide the maximum torque of a mid-drive motor because you don't have the mechanical advantage of delivering the power through the gears. So a hub motor delivers lets say 45Nm in the fastest gear and 45Nm in the slowest gear at maximum power where as a mid-drive motor may deliver lets say 15Nm in the fastest gear but 60Nm in the slowest hill climbing gear at maximum power. There is also more power loss through the chain maybe 3Nm. A light geared hub motor to help take you up the hill for a downhill run could be a good choice for a mountain bike rider, it will extend the life of the drivetrain and help you get up that hill.

I’d like to point out that your definition of whether a pedal assist bike is a motorcycle or not is in fact incorrect. While yes it has two wheels and a motor. The definition of motorcycle includes a very key part you left out “has no pedals”. A motorcycle is able to have its speed regulated by a throttle. Since a pedal assist bike won’t do anything unless you PEDAL they are most definitely not a motorcycle.

We hike 7.5 miles in the hills by his house. The we do 2 17 plus or minus ebike rides at 2800 plus elevation gain each, a totalof around ft 7000 totalfor the day. My heart rate is extremely high for my age at a 152 to 157 averages on the bike. I sweat profusely. It's all about personal choice of level. Other issues in the negative are far out weighted by the positives. The fun factor and motivation alone is like nothing else. Love both E and non E. Thought about and really was going to get an ebike myself, but I've realized I'd just be better suited to buy a lighter bike as I'm very overbiked with 15.5KG almost enduro level bike on, let's be honest here, XC trails for 90%.

Con: You can't just buy an e-bike frame. It's fcked. Suppliers want to sell an entire set of components and wheels every time you would like a new frame. Con: There are now parts of you bike you just can't service yourself. With forks and shocks you can learn to service it with some effort. Not with motors. No drawings, oil spec etc. It's all secret. Con: When releasing new motors, you can't just upgrade motor. No you need to buy an entire new bike with wheels, frame, components and all. The industry is truly fcked if they think this is a good idea for both consumers and the environment. The Ep8 motor fit's 100% with bolt holes and all in an E8000 motor frame! I'm really fed up with the manufacturers just deciding collectively to be this way.

I'm glad that ebikes exist for those who have health issues, for recovery rides, or so families/friends with varied skill levels can ride together. But now that nearly half of the people on my local hills have ebikes it is concerning. And with these increased numbers it is abundantly clear that many people ride ebikes for reasons other than health problems. And to be fair, that's fine. I have three thoughts concerning ebikes: 1. Few (new riders) have the bike-handling skills to ride at ebike speeds around hikers, trail runners, and equestrians. Airlift rescues have gone up around here because everyone got a Christmas COVID bike (electric or not). All mountain biking takes skill. Speeding it up as a beginner seems like a liability that we'll all pay for at some point. 2. Speaking of liability, Clint said, that he sees ebikes as motorcycles. Regardless of your (or my) thoughts, the Electric dirt bike is now in the hills. They are coming fast to a trail near you. They weigh around 100lbs, go 30 to 50mph, are silent, have a throttle and no pedals, and these riders have no clue what the difference between an up trail and a down trail is because of ignorance, or they are avoiding the police. While these electric dirt bikes are NOT your fault, they will draw a lot of unwanted attention, more rules, limitations, and very possibly the banning of any "motorized" vehicles. You might want to politely ask them to leave when you see them. 3. If you're on Strava, great! But don't poach data from people who have earned it. Set up your Strava to ebike. Cheers and Mahalo!

Good job summarizing the pro’s and con’s. I’m in my early 70’s now and some health issues with heart and COPD have slowed me down considerably and reduced my stamina and overall strength. Biggest pro is to be able to ride much further (and experience and see much more) during a ride. This is particularly a big benefit if the rider has access to many miles of trails. Another big benefit is that it enables a rider to to ride very steep technical trails or fire roads which are only meant for pros or may even be impossible to ride on normal bikes due to the steep gradients of 23% plus. Biggest down side is wanting to pass other riders on non e-bikes on single track trails - I always feel guilty and apologetic!

Hi Clint, great discussion as usual, however I disagree with your classification of a "motor bike". A motor bike is effortless, stick it in gear, a bit of throttle and let the clutch out and you're off. The ebike is going nowhere unless you pedal it. Requires effort albeit a lot less than a traditional bike. Would you say you're a glass half full, or half empty in regards of ebikes? Thanks for the great video, I'm swaying towards half full myself.

Many of the points you bring up (especially the maintenance, trail, and bike classification) are left out in so many social media feeds. The roads in my city are cleaned once a year maybe, some roads just stay dirty and full of glass year round every year, THIS ia a huge problem for bicyclist, because car accidents cause debris that cause flats continuously, and the government is NOT maintaining road safety for cyclist... Most of the eBikers I know only use them for trail riding sadly, because leaving a $1700+ bicycle laying around at a store (Even locked up) is NOT a good idea... Jesus is God & He loves you Jesus will soon be seen by all men, women, and children in the clouds. Jesus is returning now! Believe and be saved. Exodus 3:14 (God speaking) And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. John 8:58 (Jesus speaking) Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 10:30 (Jesus speaking) I and my Father are one. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, *The everlasting Father,* The Prince of Peace. Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, *God with us.* John 1:1 & 14 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 And the Word was made flesh (Lord Jesus), and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 8:24 (Jesus speaking) I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. John 14:9 (Jesus speaking) Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Hebrews 1:1-3, & 8 (God calls His Son "O God" because Jesus IS God in the flesh) 1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; *and every eye shall see him,* and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. Isaiah 44:6 (God speaking) Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. Revelation 1:8 (Jesus speaking) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, *the Almighty.* Revelation 22:13 (Jesus speaking) I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. --- There Are None Righteous / How To Be Saved Romans 3:10 & 23 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Luke 5:31-32 (Jesus speaking) 31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 1 Peter 3:18 (The word “quicken” means “to make alive”) For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Repent of your sins or suffer the consequences. Lord Jesus died in our places personally to take the death punishment that sin deserves and then resurrected by the power of God. Believe this and sincerely repent of your sins each time you sin and you will have eternal life and nothing to fear. Fail to repent and you will end up in the Lake of Fire.

Remember, there are different types of E-bikes as well.. a superlight ebike wont afford you the luxury of riding on turbo up 2000ft of climbing. I only use turbo on my Levo when it's super steep. I also have it in trail mode for 80% of the climbs. My Trail and Eco are customized to . 50-75 and 30-60. (assist /power)..Acceleration completely off, stuffle off. So I have to put in 50 % of the leg power to get the full assist of the bike with the power turned down to 75%. I can keep my HR at about 140 for 1 to 2 hours of constant riding. This is the best form of endurance training. Riding a regular bike is max output and puts you in the red. It's much better for power output, as your have to use more leg power but cardio wise I don't think they can really be compared. That being said, just like a recovery day, you can have a training day when you do the entire 2 hours on eco. 50lbs of bike is a lot to lug up a hill when the assist levels get that low, and to obtain it you gotta work hard to even get it. This is what I've come to realize. That if you take the most fit person on a regular bike. Give them an Ebike and tell them to ride it every day but they can tailor it to work exactly how they want instead of having to work off the terrain, they will be able to push it even harder. The bikes now have targets you where the bike will change output and assist levels based off of your stats. If you wanna do 30min of 140 then 10 of 160. You can.. a regular bike won't MAKE you get fit. People just stop and rest, or walk.

I ride a heavy stealth bomber E-bike, and I own a normal MTB, my normal MTB is broken’ bent rim, and rear derailleur…and my e-bike doesn’t have a battery yet, and I only have 7 speeds, I decided to take the Non powered heavy E bike anyway…I was a bit slower….but using the heavy non-powered bike as a handicap gave me a better workout. I can’t wait to see if I become faster with my regular MTB…I did get crazy looks’ stealth bomber E-Bikes don’t look like your typical MTB’ it’s a bulky bike, I even pass ppl with it…Lol. One person swore I was using power power …I had to show him the empty battery compartment….I’m not able to pedal and turn’ pedal hits the ground, So I have to pedal hard, and coast to turn. I’m gonna try to do a run with the battery’ it weighs 40 pounds’ and do it again with no power, I have a small sprocket on the crankshaft, and only a rear derailleur….the bike is easy to climb with its low gearing, or I’m just strong. The bike does have hydraulic brakes, and a handle bar mounted, rear shock adjuster, I’m definitely getting one for my normal MTB…all I need is a 27.5 inch front rim with disk brakes, the Derailleur is on its way….so riding something that’s 4 timers heavier, does help get stronger. The back tire is a dang anchor weight…I built it for roads, so I had to put on my extra Dirt trail tires.

You overlooked the obvious con: E-bikes is an evolving industry with manufacturers going in and out of business. You can make a purchase and discover that parts are unavailable or that bike shops are unwilling to work on an off-brand E-bike because of liability concerns. It pays to stick with major brands, such as Gazelle, Trek, or Specialized.

At 61, I've got an e-bike inbound after trying one out for about 15 minutes. It's going to allow me to actually enjoy getting back to a fitness level that allows me to do justice to my conventional road bikes that have been languishing. One of the first things I will do is disconnect the throttle. As for trail and path access, we just need to stop using the broad-brush term "motorized." Simply make the wording for trail/path restrictions specific: problem solved.

I watched your video until you started taking an objective fact and attempted to turn it into a subjective interpretation. You may consider ebikes as motorcycles but, an ebike doesn't fit the legal definition of a motorcycle. You may consider filming a person in public without their permission as being illegal but, filming someone in public without their permission is not illegal. I think that's the problem with many, they look at objective facts as subjective interpretations.

Why can't we reserve the raw materials to make ebike batteries for disabled people who need the batteries? Downhill nobody really needs an ebike. If you can't handle the hill, push your bike. I have seen many ebike riders stall going uphill. I think all bikes are fun. But a normal bike, a really high end mtb, with good gearing is going to be fun, more fun than a cheap mtb. Yes, a lot of people who are scared of riding a bike and think an ebike is the answer are just plain ignorant. I bike commute 18km each way, no ebike, and I ride with normal clothes, on a trekking bike. I got used to the commute and rarely sweat, I rolled along . The ebike sales are rising but I believe they are not the best. Sad that people can't just focus on a sweet, steel frame, surley, or something vintage. Those bikes are fun. Not all ebikes are created equally. Just like any bike. I prefer sitting up, and riding comfortably, brooks saddles, and you get used to it. Like I said. I have a disabled friend who prefers a cheap clunky bike and does very well. I think the fun factor if ebikes makes them look like a video game and not reality. Bicycle safety, not helmet mandates but actually paying attention while riding and being responsible. I see responsible people riding on trails and careless people storming full speed with uncertainty but they have an emtb so they have to be cool 😎 I definitely have concerns about the sheeple buying ebikes and not even needing to ride at a higher speed. Personally, I have passed countless ebike riders because they can go 25kmh and I go faster. Sure uphill anybody can go faster because you have a motor. 😆 Good luck.

I have an e-bike and I love it. I get great workouts with my bike, and I am able to push myself a lot. I ride it in the lowest setting (eco) most of my 30 mile ride. If I hit a hill and want to get some help, I will use the throttle and pedal as hard as I can to get up the hill. It helps but you still have to work to get up the hill. Without killing all your energy on hills, you can ride a lot farther than you ever thought. They are incredibly versatile. I can see all kind of advantages for all different types of riders. They help all kinds of people get off the couch and get some exercise. That is great.

No matter your skill (maybe skill accounts for it) the surface you hit on a tight turn surface or it's condition might not be what you expect. It comes down to always guarantee you can avoid damage by or damaging any obstacle. The same applies to driving in the dark. Don't drive so fast you can't stop within the distance you can see with your lights on. You can't see much around every corner before you turn. Don't treat public surfaces like a controlled race track on which your vehicle is the only one and you'll be safe(r).

Good video. From a sustainability point of view, 1 m2 of land can provide enough wheat per year to fuel a rider for 25 miles, but 1 m2 of solar panel can power an e-bike for 21,000 miles per year. So, arguably electric bikes, if charged from renewable sources, are far more efficient than a rider powered by a jam sandwich!
@dmalecki01

Yep! We eat up food that requires a lot of labor, energy, land, and water to produce, distribute, and prepare. E-bikes are far more efficient than non E-bikes. It doesn't matter that much where the energy to charge the bike came from, the numbers are far more in favor of E-bikes than pedal bikes. The ratio for E-bikes vs pedal bikes is a lot different than the ratio between electric vs gas automobiles. Maybe all E-bikes should also have throttles, for the eco-conscious riders (;

I do not understand why any mountain biker would want one of these. Go gasoline powered motorcycle if you are into ridiculously long or steep rides. The batteries can be "hacked" when necessary needed. Not that hard to do.

Clint... everything you say is mostly true.... but then, you are viewing it from a professional bike rider point of view. Not everyone is going to race through the woods at top speed... taking a spill at 20 MPH on an e-bike or standard bike could cause very serious injury. When I'm out cranking up a never ending hill or a strong head wind, it would take the stuffing out of me. My e-bike allows me to go further, to explore more and not have me calculate just how hard it will be to get back home after I run out of steam.

I thought the comment on the FS opening up trails to ebikes being motorcycles, then gas powered motorbikes can use the trails was good. For some weird reason, this reminds me of transgender biologic males competing in women's sports. To rephrase, allowing ebikes to use non-motorized trails is like allowing the transgender male and then all other males to compete with the women. Ergo: ebikes are motorized, some trails are not for motorized travel and should be kept that way, especially if real motorcycles are then allowed to blast through the area. They greatly change the character of and the naturalness of the environment.

Nobody who has physical limitations to the extent that they cannot pedal a bicycle should not be anywhere near a mountain bike trail. Mountain biking is an extreme sport that can result in serious injury or death. It is not for old people or someone disabled enough to need an ebike. Regular biking, absolutely. E-bike to your heart's content. But no mountain biking.

People have no problem with e bikes. They have problem when ebike riders deny of their bike to be even half similar to motorcycles. A bike that is powered by both leg and motor at the same time. Still Its is a bike but not a motorbike to them. If it's just a bike, it's just a motor bike too at the same time. Why does it is called a bike with motor, and not a light motorbike with pedals. Whether or not you use the lift or the shuttle is 100% irrelevant. They going to be running anyhow. While a lift might use marginally more energy than if you're not in it, the same is really not true of a shuttle. The marginal difference between 5 bikes and riders vs 4 bikes and riders is tiny. So small, you couldn't really measure it. The vast majority is used to move the shuttle itself.

A pro is that you can commute without smelling of sweat all day at work. A con is that they can churn up the trails more. Another con is that people will avoid having to invest as much time in getting fit as they would have, if an ordinary bike were the only option. To me eBikes are the same as mopeds, save for one being powered by petrol and the other by electric.
