Sound like a good system . The English navy had a system using different types of things like leather , fabric, twine etc to mark each length , but without knowledge you are quickly lost! The US navy system also means when you see a mark you can figure out what you are looking at. Despite what anybody might think as that chain rushes out it's hard to keep count of the marks going over ....... and no plastic , good for you. cheers Warren .

So, @6:51 it looks like you've got your chain connected directly to your locker bulkhead instead of a nylon shock line... not sure if that's how it actually is, but that's what it looks like at quick glance. I'd really recommend adding a spliced in shock line if that's the case incase of a runaway windlass, or if you need to cut anchor in an emergency situation. - an enlisted(former) person (lol)

Wow, You were paying attention! Yes you are right I did connect the chain to the hard stop on the boat. This was temporary so I wouldn't loose the bitter end of the chain. We spliced in 200' of double braid nylon rode to the end of the chain and connected the other end of the nylon to the hard stop on the boat. Didn't get that on camera. I very grateful that you are watching and that you made the comment. I truly appreciate hearing from our viewers. Comments like yours go a long way in keeping us out of trouble. Again, thank you for watching and commenting. From the Crew of Thunder, Fair Winds and Following Seas.

@@Questforthunder "ATD shipmate" as the kids used to say lol, honestly it's a habit that was ingrained into me after 8.5 years in naval aviation. I'm glad to hear it was only a temporary solution. I'd rather say something, and have it turn out to be a non issue than not say anything about a potential problem, say nothing, and have it be a major issue leading to loss of life or property. Well, keep living the dream, fair winds, and following seas.

Couldn’t you just do 1,2,3 white links and achieve the same thing?

That is the most annoying sound at the beginning of the video. I almost didn't watch.

I'm sorry the boatswain's pipe is bothersome. It's the call to attention is the Navy. Thought is was a cool nautical touch. Maybe I can turn it down some.
