I received a flower garden quilt - ALLLL hand stitched - when I got married in 1976. This was made by my husband's grandmother who lived in Plantersville, Alabama. I HAVE got to send you a picture of it AND my postage stamp quilt his mother made...again ALLL hand stitched. The hours...I have no words to express how much I cherish that quilt.

Those quilts were beautiful! and such a treasure. I knew the seam ripper thingy, however, the thread spool is something I never knew. I knew about keeping your thread from coming loose...but AMAZED about holding the needle. Thanks for always sharing great tips. If ever i get a road trip I will make sure to come to your shop.

I sow a lot, but I also didn't know about the compartment. My sister had a shop with fabric and threads , zippers etc. Everything for sewing. I just send her a question if she knew this too. She never told me if she did know it.😂😂 The two quilts are very beautiful. Real treasures.

The way I use the seam ripper is similar to the "correct" method. Fabric & seam hanging down, I place the seam ripper above the seam, pointed down with the red ball towards me, pushing down on the stitches...like using a rotary cutter on the seam. That sharp surface, which is curved, which is like a curved rotary cutter, works faster. It's safe as long as the end of the seam is not on your lap. Just be careful what the now pointed down seam riper will hit once through the stitches. I am pulling apart the now cut seam with my non-dominant hand. Another way is on a flat surface: After you press open the seam from the back, place the wrong/back side of the fabric on a flat surface. Open the seam from the front with right sides up [like opening a magazine], placing the seam ripper at the seam end closest to you. See the red ball on the front side, line up the seam ripper sharp point beneath the threads sewn and push the seam ripper away from yourself, straight up that seam. The action cuts those threads using the curved sharp edge on the sewn threads. Then re-press the ends where the seam was, flat.

I love your chair! Where did you get it? I have been looking for a comfortable sewing chair without arms. I just found out about needle storage with Guterman thread spools! Now, if the manufacturers will add a magnet, too. 🙂 Beautiful quilts. I only hope my family will save my quilts to pass on. I am a baby boomer generation and I've discovered that my children (Gen X and Gen Z) are not sentimental about passing items on. I fear they'll clean out my home with a dumpster not knowing (or caring) I may have items that should be passed down, not thrown out.

So I do not understand the needle in the spool tip. Yes, the end comes off but unless you have never broken the paper seals on the ends of the spool there is no way this will trap a needle. The needle simply slides out of the spool as soon as you replace the cap and turn the spool over. By the way this end cap with the extension inside is only available on very new spools. I opened many of my older spools and there was simply the ring at the top to capture the thread end.

Seam rippers wear out. They are not an heirloom item. Hold the fabric taut and slightly elated upward on a 30 ° angle. Put red ball of a farly new seam ripper inside the seam you want to remove. Just push and the seam is ripped out. No fabric damage. Buy new rippers and toss the old ones.
@sewcharmingquiltshop

No they are definitely not heirloom items but they are surely necessary. Yes, you use the red ball side as I did in the video. It makes it a lot easier!

I recently purchased a new sewing machine, with the intention of learning free motion quilting. My question is do you start in the center of the quilt or the outside edges?
@sewcharmingquiltshop

I’ve always quilted on a long arm but I believe you pin it from the middle out and start quilting at the middle edge and head toward the center and then back to the edge.
