The way I see it, these are the real Fenders. I mean, the guy sold his company, and then started a company and continued working on and evolving his original designs. These are what modern Strats and Teles would be today if he had kept the company. Kind of “future” Fenders that the Fender company will never make. I’d particularly like to own a Comanche. It was Leo’s final word on what the Stratocaster should have become. I think what Fender is to Squier, G&L is to Fender, the next level up.
@rexrathtar3893

It is interesting to muse about what might have been had Leo not got sick and kept the company rather than selling it to CBS, but I think it's a little bit of mental gymnastics to say G&L is the real Fender. Legacy is so much of what makes Fender and Gibson so desirable to players and G&L simply doesn't have the legacy. A genuine Fender Tele comes from one place only... and it isn't G&L.
@dingusfuzzklonnkt2755

It's only mental gymnastics if you simultaneously (i) reject the fundamental concept of brand value (ii) ignore that your instrument will plummet in value if you buy a G&L in a way a Fender will not and (iii) accept as given your debatable claim that a Fullerton G&L is superior to an American Pro II or an American Ultra.

It was so unbelievably nice to play & versatile, I also bought an FD ASAT Solamente (single pickup) to go along with it, thinking I’d keep the better of the 2 and reverb off the other. Nope, keeping them both. Brilliant instruments that compliment each other perfectly. Neck felt amazing, didn’t stay in tune and surprised there’s no locking tuners . Nice though the gig bag looks at the price I’d be expecting a case . I really like the G and L Tribute Teles but the weight is ridiculous 9 lbs plus !!! The MFD pickups are great and they’re on the less expensive models so I’d be tempted to look at them . Oh and that second hand Strat was sold for £800 even with the noiseless pickups .Brand new be £1300 plus cost of noiseless pickups which don’t function well with the tone controls as they are more treble and bass controls apparently 😟

I've just taken delivery of my ASAT Classic that I managed to find here in Australia. A couple of observations, but with a big disclaimer: I am coming off a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Tele, so I suspect any US-made guitar is going to feel absolutely amazing. First: I LOVE the tummy cut! I mostly play sitting and it feels so much more comfortable to have that scoop. Second: The weight... it is swamp ash body and significantly lighter than the Squier (pine) and feels really nice to hold. When I decided to upgrade I was also considering getting a Fender Pro ll but I saw they are now being made from "roasted pine" [Edit: Actually I see both Fender and G&L are now using pine]. Third: The price here was markedly cheaper (AU$2200) compared to AU$2800 for the Fender (note though that the Fender comes with a hard case, G&L only with the gig bag). Overall I am very happy with my choice - the build quality is excellent. I realise that it may not have the same resale value as a Fender, but I am buying it to play. When I get enough money to start building a guitar-based investment portfolio I might think differently. 😃

Of course, if you are flush with cash, the world is your oyster; get what you want (I would get a Suhr). I did buy a G&L Tribute Ascari GT90 from Musicians Friend for $299 with one of their Stupid Deal of the Day emails. Beautiful guitar, mahogany body, set neck, binding, and two P90 pups. No regrets, more like a bargain to me. Don't have to worry about resale value. I would not sell it anyway, it's a keeper.

I bought a Bluesboy tribute brand new and although it wasnt my first choice, it was slim pickins a year into the pandemic and I really liked the guitar. My main complaints were that once I strapped it on at home I realized how heavy it was and the nut was such that the E strings would sometimes slide off the the neck. I sold it and lost a good bit on the sale(friend pricing too). I have a fender vintera 70s and tele MIM 72 reissue that I just love, but I am eying the G&L doheny tribute. I heard many tributes have bad nut spacing but that should be an easy fix.

Seems really well made. Looks very nice -- the colour and grain are great, headstock not so much -- but if it's close in price to an Am Pro II Tele, there's a number of things that are better on the Fender, from the neck to the sculpted neck heel. The belly cut is never important to me, but I do like the low weight of this guitar and the six-saddles are probably more to my liking than the three on the Am Pro (although I still haven't had any intonation problems so far with my Am Pro II). Case is much nicer with the Fender as well.

I changed the PU to Dimarzios (Area 58/61 and crunchlab) and added some mods (Gilmour mod and a switch between capacitors) and also switched the volume pot to 500k. Still sounds amazing with fresh strings, and much less so than other guitars with older strings. The only thing I can fault though is the trem system, which quickly de-tunes the guitar and doesn't allow much bending to begin with. The PTB and Gilmour switch make the guitar really flexible. For a guitar at that price range the quality is amazing. It's quite heavy though.

G&L guitars do have lower resale value than Fenders or most other guitars. While most guitars have a used market resale value about 75% of their original new price (assuming good condition), G&L's sell for about 60% of their new price. I see this as a huge benefit because I tend to buy used when I buy a guitar. So I benefit from the lower price, get a killer guitar in good condition, and then if I want to, I can sell it later for whatever I paid originally and refund my full investment.

I’m sure I will be corrected ( and more than happy to be) but at least in the recent past there would be two reasons. The pick ups. They are very, very different to standard tele type pick ups. Not better, different. This is where I don’t have all the details is that you can fully customise the build for significantly less than a custom built Fender. What I am not sure on is if this option was available with or without an extra cost compared to something off the shelf. People claim that you’re getting custom shop for and finish for Am Pro prices but I’m not sure about that. I’ve also heard that the Tributes blow MIM away, quality wise, which maybe true comparing Player to Tribute but higher end MIMs, I’d have to disagree.

If G&L is to Fender what Fender is to Squier, where does Music Man fit? Leo formed that company between leaving Fender and starting G&L.

Leo Fender had a hand in starting Music Man after he left Fender. He then sold Music Man and started G&L

You want a Telecaster, buy a Telecaster. It will actually sound 100% like a Telecaster and hold its value like a Telecaster. So there is that.

In the lefty market G&L holds its own. Righty Teles are common and with supply and demand the are easy to come by for under $1000 in minty condition if you haggle.
