Let's say a recruiter reaches out to you and chats with you about a position. Do you talk through your background and wait for next steps? There are questions candidates can ask recruiters to understand the behind the scenes of the search.
So few candidates ask me how I know the client. Come to think of it, I don't think anyone asks. Candidates rarely ask how long the search has been open, how the search has changed over time, or what the feedback on other candidates has been so far.
Why are these questions good to ask? Of course the answers are interesting, but more than anything, it lets you know how much emotional weight you should put into this particular position and how to best position yourself. If it's a new client to this search firm that's fine, but perhaps they're still working out the kinks of understanding culture fit, the interview process, and compensation parameters. Maybe the client and search firm are still figuring out the role itself. Maybe they're close to making an offer. Maybe they've seen 5 people and all are no's. I can't begin to tell you how many candidates tell me that they're not hearing back from recruiters for weeks, or that they fit a JD so well, but the recruiter won't put them forward and they can't understand why. Understanding the relationship between the recruiter and client, and the evolution of the search since it launched, can help you read between the lines on so many things.
