Why do we have specific traditions ?
What is Yom Kippur’s meaning? Why do we call it YOm kippur day of atonement?
Why do we have specific traditions associated to the 10 days between RH and YK and with YK itself? Why do we call this period high holidays?
what should be our main focus on Yom Kippur? How is Yom Kippur celebrated?
what is the proper Yom Kippur greeting?
How to celebrate Yom Kippur at home?
In this video we will answer all these questions and give you 5 things you should do to add meaning to your yom kippur
At sunset of the tenth of the Hebrew month of ‘Tisheri’ {תשרי} will be the beginning of the HOLIEST day of the Jewish year - ‘Yom Kippur.’ {יום כיפור}
It is customary to translate ‘Yom Kippur’ as the ‘Day of Atonement’ and it comes from the following biblical verse:
“Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves” “And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God.” (Vayikra/Leviticus 23:26-29)
In fact, For nearly 26 hours we “afflict our souls”: we abstain from food and drink, do not wash or apply lotions or creams, do not wear leather footwear, and abstain from marital relations. Instead, we spend the day praying for forgiveness.
But why?
Because To be able to focus totally on one thing we have to turn off all the other distractions.
In a nutshell Yom Kippur’ is a day of self-examination. It is a day for every person to stop everything in his/her life and to take the time reflect on the most meaningful things
This is the reason for the unique greeting people greet each with other on ‘Yom Kippur’ - ‘G'mar Chatima Tova!’ {גמר חתימה טובה} - which means ‘May you be signed and sealed in the Book of Life!’
Review your year and ask for forgiveness to the people you have not act properly to because G.d will forgive the sins you made against him but not the sins you made against your fellow Jew
Make sure to increase our Torah study and charitable giving.
In these days before Yom Kippur, some are careful to settle all debts so that they come to the holy day with a clean slate.
This is a time to be extra careful with all mitzvah observances: eat kosher,
If you have the inspiration to a do a good deed/Mitzvah, do it right away, put your inspiration into action
On YK itself
Make sure to be in an environment to be able to connect with G.d in your prayer, focus on the words,( have a prayer book in a language you understand) think about the root cause of the sin that is mentioned
Try to get your spouse to look after the children for at least one prayer, or if it is a possibility get a baby sitter for your children.
Above all enjoy this incredible gift that you have to be able to repent for all your sins whilst G.od is close to you :)
