I loved the SS France and am so thankful that I got to cross with her from England. We passed the QEII mid Atlantic as she made her way to England from NY. The France was truly elegant, even if you weren't in first class! As an 18 year old, it was magic and I still have an ashtray and a couple menus. On occasion I meet someone who traveled on her and it's like we're instantly family. Definitely a private club, just like it is for those who traveled on the Orient Express, which I did also.

The Queen Mary was actually a rival to SS France too, from 1962 to 1967. A less known fact is that the SS France probably was the second fastest ocean liner of all time. During her sea trials in 1961 she reached a top speed of 35.217 knots using a power of 174,784 hp. Only the SS United States was faster.

@Daniel De saint malo I don't think you have the exactly right information. 54 kmh is 29 knots. QE2's normal service speed was 28.5 knots and her top speed as steam powered was approx. 32 knots (59 kmh) and as diesel powered approx. 34 knots (63 kmh). What do you mean with "the Queens made the voyage in 4 days and QM2 in 6 days at the same speed"? Definitely not the same speed. QM2 sails at a much slower speed to save fuel. Btw her top speed is approx. 30 knots (55.5 kmh) 28.5 knots was also Queen Mary's normal service speed. Her top speed was 32.84 kn (60.82 km/h; 37.79 mph) (achieved on speed trials).

I did have the model of the France when I was a kid and never ceased to like its pure lines. France made the two coolest looking ship liner in history: Normandie and France. They were so elegant. Of course, the QEII was a nice attempt from the British to improve their design tastes which were always questionable. I would surely like to sail both but my favorite is definitely the France and I would have liked to get inboard at Quebec City. Greetings from Canada.

This is a tough one! I prefer the appearance of the France: though streamlined and stylized she's not that far from the liners of the 20's and 30's which I tend to prefer to more modern funnels-aft designs. As an American I think I would be more comfortable on a British liner because of more cultural and language similarities. I think the QE2 looked better with age (except for changing the stern lido area and covering windows overlooking the bow) so (after a bit of a struggle!) I pick the QE2.

My good fortune, I have crossed the Atlantic many times on not a few liners, including both France and QE2 as well as SS United States, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and QM2. Unfortunately for me I just missed being able to sail on the Andrea Doria. The cuisine on the France was unsurpassed (at least in first). I believe QE2 had finer service throughout the ship. And, the British officers, including Bil Warwick (master) exuded professionalism. Ultimately, I'm afraid I can not answer your question as I really enjoyed sailing on both ships. I think it a travesty and shame that Norway, nee France was scrapped.

When the SS France became the Norway the ship was sent to Germany in 1980 to be refitted into a cruise ship. During the refit they removed two propeller shafts and dismantled the forward boilers and engine rooms, so effectively the ship became a twin screw that could hardly exceed 25 knots in service (never needed speed as it was now a cruise liner). The QE2 continued crossing the Atlantic and was refitted in 86. The steam turbines and boilers were scrapped and replaced with nine MAN diesel engines. This new propulsion system was a lot more economical and powerful with an increased top speed and it could cruise at 29 knots only using seven of the engines and could reach 35 knots if needed using all nine engines. Whilst the SS France was basically turned into a shadow of her former past, the QE2 became an even more modern liner that was economical and still looked fantastic.
@kaydenchan7093

For exterior looks I'd vote for SS France. The France was one of the last Transatlantic 'Ships of State' designed to spend most of her career crossing the N Atlantic at high speed in enclosed comfort. No expense was spared in building the France as part of the construction and operating subsidies were paid paid for by the French government. She never needed to make money as she was not a privately owned liner. QE2 is a very different ship designed to spend half the year on the high speed N Atlantic run and the rest of the year on worldwide cruises. The layouts of the ships were very different with France having a traditional N Atlantic interior (glass enclosed promenades, dining rooms low with no portholes and limited outdoor deck space) QE2 was the opposite w/two outdoor pools (two indoor pools) spacious sun decks and restaurants and lounges high up with large windows looking out to the sea. France was beautifully fitted out with the finest materials while QE2 being operated by a private company needing to make a profit used material not to the same standard. Both ships were drastically altered over the years in order to remain competitive in the changing cruise business.

I would choose the France hands down just because it's bigger and has a little bit more of a traditional ocean liner appearance. I didn't like the QE2 much when it was built. I thought it was a let down form the old Cunard Queens. Over time I came to like it more, but it never held a candle to its predecessors. I'm glad the Queen Mary was preserved and the France led a long life as a cruise ship. But, sadly the France has left us now. I don't know what the status o the QE2 is these days but I hope it survives in one form or another. .

QE2 is rotting away in Dubai. The people who bought her to use as a hotel have run out of money on that project, so she's simply rusting away in Dubai's climate. Hopefully the company will either sell her to someone willing to put her to good use again or finish their conversion.

I think it is still seaworthy, the hull. There was a team looking after her until about 2011. The team cared dearly for the ship, refurbishing some of the woodwork and more importantly keeping the engines online to power the air-con. Without it, she's rotting. Mind you, SS United States's hull is seaworthy and she's been sitting for decades.

The aluminium superstructure of QE2 suffers from metal fatigue. If you want her to cross the oceans again you probably would have to renew the whole superstructure. The SS US is floating in freshwater in a cooler climate. That's much better than the salty water and the hot humid climate in Dubai.

+mintydemon Yes, I know. NCL removed 2 of her 4 propellers before they put her into service in 1980 to make her more fuel efficient. It was no need for a cruise ship to do 30+ knots anyway. But steam turbines aren't very fuel efficient, so maybe it would have been a good idea to replace the steam engines with a diesel-electric propulsion system just like the QE2. The fuel consumption for QE2 was reduced with about 40% at service speed (28.5 knots) and even more at lower speeds, because they didn't have to keep all the engines running. With this system they could use the engines optimally at any speed. And it could have given the Norway even a longer life, because it was a boiler explosion that ended her career in 2003.

@sealover5861
3 жыл бұрын
I agree. This was because SS France was a pure ocean liner and QE2 was built as a "hybrid", an ocean liner suitable for regular cruises, like many other liners, some of them built already before SS France. France wasn't a profitable ship, and when the oil crisis happened she was laid up in 1974. Five years later NCL bought her and converted her into a cruise ship and removed 2 of her 4 turbines and propellers, after this she did only max. 25 knots. Later they added those ugly top decks. Of course her hull was still an ocean liner hull, which made her more comfortable in heavy seas than any other ship at that time. Her deep draught was indeed an issue. she couldn't call all ports and was to wide to pass through the Panama Canal, which a ship with her passenger capacity should do to be competitive. QE2 sailed more than 5 million nautical miles, more than any other ship ever has done until this day and survived her life expectancy by a good margin.

I would almost bet that the France, the Michelangelo or the Raffaello (if they were around today) would give you a more stable ride (even in the roughest weather) than even the QM2 (which is the best design and compromise among the host of cloned floating refrigerators out there).
@sealover5861
7 жыл бұрын
+Roberto Alexandre Without experience in real life it's difficult to say. I'm sure that the France gave you a smoother ride than the QE2 because she was both longer and wider and had a deeper draft. The Italian sisters were smaller but had a deeper draft than the QE2 so I think they behave pretty much the same way. The enormous hull of the QM2 in combination with very efficient stabilizers make her stable but the disadvantage is her high superstructure.
@robertoalexandre4250
7 жыл бұрын
A very vivid memory I have (even if I was very young, but the memory was enough to make me also a sea and ship lover-expecially liners) was travelling on the Raffaello to Italy. I remember the ride there was absolutely smooth (no pitch/roll) and back the ship encountered a storm with very slight pitching (obviously one felt one was travelling on water, but I remember it didn´t make me sick or anything and was slight and gentle) and probably the same amount of rolling. That memory struck me, because I remember the waves hitting fiercely against the windows. But you´re right: I´ve read that people have praised the QM2 (less the QE2 - after she got top-beavy, her pitching became more increased). I´m certainly no expert, but the keel and center of gravity (+ good stabilizers) have a lot to do with the way the ship moves through the big waves. But the QE2, for her long-time record and endurability, takes the prize for making history. . Nothing like the former ocean liners including other beautiful ones like the Rotterdam, Leonard da Vinci, Oceanic, Eugenio C, etc. The esthetic is gone and now what we have are floating condo-cassino-and-shopping centers.

A sharp bow and a deep draft of an ocean liner make the ship going through the waves and make her ride smooth. A modern cruise ship with a barge-like hull, which means a blunt bow and a low draft, will more bump up and down on big waves and makes the ride unpleasant. Stabilizers can't change that fact. So even if they made both SS France/Norway and QE2 more top-heavy through their long career their seaworthiness were still a lot better than even the biggest cruise ships of today. I agree that both Michelangelo and Raffaello were amazing liners but it was a mistake to build pure ocean liners in the 1960's anymore. The same with SS France but fortunately NCL purchased her. The SS Rotterdam (1959) was built to be easily converted to a cruise ship, that's one reason why she got an over 40 year long active career.

Never mind these two contenders, the best liner ever is the original Queen Mary. The most beautifully proportioned ship ever built.

QE was a modified version of QM, better in many ways. I am not talking about what they looked like, it's a question of personal taste. Normandie was technically more advanced than both queens. Besides her steam-electric propulsion she had a lighter hull with better hydrodynamics. QM won the Blue Riband just because of raw power. But I am not a big fan of Normandie's funnels, to me they look too thick and dominate the ship too much.

+Juicy Bunz Yes, it is. Only in 1969 you could see these two ships together. It was the last year for the US and the first for the QE2. And at 1:45 the Italian SS Raffaello is in the foreground.

Not exactly the Raffaello, she was her sistership Michelangelo. You can distinguish her by small particulars: in this case, the different shape of the swimming pool.

Both Ships are great but look at the RMS Queen Elizabeth built in 1938, only 4 ft shorter than the SS France but actually wider than the SS France which was built 1960.

SS France was narrow compared to her lenght even if she was the longest of all oceanliners. The QE , QM (1934) and Normandie (1932) were wider and therefore larger. SS Normandie was the widest. QE2 was the fifth largest even if the SS United States is longer. QM2 (2003) not included.

+QE2 hahah, "QM2 not included". Hah, if she was, there would be no point to comparing the others. She literally is a monster but still holding some tradition unlike Oasis and her crowd.

+CalMac and Waverley Enthusiast You are right, I just wanted to compare the former ocean liners with each other, even if all of them did not sail at the same time. The QM2 has not had a rival in any other ocean liner, she is the only one of her kind today. I don't like new cruise ships, they just look like compressed cities put on barges.

I find some interiors interesting on modern cruise ships but the exteriors are almost 100% of the time, awful looking! I call them shopping trolleys as they sometime appear to have a handle bar across the stern like a shopping trolley. QV and QE suit the black hull and Cunard funnel but I do hate QE's forehead. I don't know if you know about the small issue that was raised when QM was built, about a steamer that already carried the name and so an agreement was made to change the steamers name to QM II. The steamers name reverted back to QM when RMS QM retired. That steamer was built on the clyde like the early Cunards and still exists and she is planned on returning to the clyde this year. Just in case you didn't know or are interested. Cunard have said they might help in some ways with the Steamer.
