Fun fact. This soda analogy is generaly known as interest curve and you can see it everywhere: movie trailers, live shows, games, articles and youtube videos!
@osakanone
2 ай бұрын
I always get kinda mad for some reason when I spot one. It makes things feel fake, and like I'm not respected as an audience and it makes me drop a lot of videos or completely ignore trailers. When you realize you're being manipulated, it backfires and feels almost offensive for some reason. I think and its why half of the art of using an interest curve is concealing it properly or making sure it feels like it belongs to the situation -- again, without being too obvious about how. I wonder what separates good interest curves from bad ones?

Great video. The examples of sound design were fantastic. A friend of mine once said that he thought that jazz was a product of the sounds of industry and manufacturing, and it makes sense if you think about it. The syncopated hi-hat sounds kinda like a sputtering car engine. The blaring of a horn or siren sounds a bit like a saxophone. It made me think of what you said towards the end about listening to the sounds of traffic and turning them into a musical composition.

I for years have thought that there is too much presence of music on our lives, we're over-saturated with it, and this video has now made me realise why. At the part where you recall your teacher getting you to open the window and listen to the "music of real life", I now get why, because we never really get to hear this anymore, because it's hard to hear that anymore as it seems like there's always music coming from somewhere making it difficult to impossible to listen to the sounds of real life.

Yeah music writing is very dialectical. Like change happening from quantitative to qualitative, which is basically the idea of rising tension being built up from contradictions in the music and in the relation to external things to like the listener etc. and then this is released in a short time when the music changes drastically and this new change negates the previous form and its own contradictions/tensions will build up again which will then release to bring the music to a more complex/higher form.

Regarding opening the practice room window: I am usually always listening to music in my car, but occasionally an album ends and I forget to queue another one, so I will just sit with the un-silence of the engine, the road sounds, maybe rain, birds, traffic, wind, and it really does become an orchestra. I think I have conditioned myself to, when I'm alone in my car, listen intently for musicality and it's very much helped me appreciate the nature of sound and the sound of nature.
