Thank you for doing this topic. I’m 53, and was raised in the 1980s version of purity culture, and I was SA-ed by a “God fearing Christian boy from a conservative family”. I went through a long journey of healing and learning and helping others. Please keep helping others.

I worked for a year at Nashville R*pe and Sexual Ab*se Center in the late 80s. At that time, studies already showed that over 90% of incarcerated persons had been abused as children. Offenders were offended against because no one spoke up for them. Offenders prey on the easy. It is far far easier for them to prey on a child who doesn’t even know their own body parts. Teach how sex works in an age appropriate manner while also teaching consent and you’ll end up with children who are far less likely to be preyed upon and won’t be experimenting just because they don’t even know what they’re doing.

THANK YOU for having this conversation. I've been walking through leaving more high control churches, IBLP, and purity culture. I resonate with how frustration and anger can take over when talking with those still adhering to purity culture. The reminder that they are on their own path and that they need the space to walk it was a helpful reminder.

This is an important topic to address. And I just want to say that on the most basic theological level sexual thoughts and feelings cannot be bad or sinful because the Song of Songs (Song of Solomon) was included in Scripture.

My husband and I used to trade adult story magazines so we could point out things we liked or didn’t like without making it a big thing.

If someone can’t keep from acting in a socially negative way…. doesn’t that say more about the person who is unable to control their behavior? My grandfather told me my emotions were my own. Only I can control them and I’m not responsible for anyone else’s emotions so long as I’m treating them as though they were Christ Incarnate.

I am a young Gen X and was in college at the height of purity culture. One time, my church group went swimming. They did separate men and women which I understood. However, the male lifeguard wasn’t allowed to guard the women. This made the lifeguard/swimmer ratio dangerous. The message was clear. It would be better for a woman to drown then cause a man to lust. 🙈

What's wrong with being a virgin? I think it's noble and it should be encouraged!

No, absolutely NOT, because nobody has any "moral obligation" to remain a virgin and choosing not to have s3x is not some "noble" act. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with being a virgin, but we shouldn't go back to villainizing people who choose to have a s3xual relationship, without having a wedding ceremony, beforehand. People should be encouraged to make their own choices and take responsibility for said choices.

Experience shows most struggling christians continue to find life difficult because Higher education / Rational clear decision making/ financial planning /relationship management /healthy sex education especially through puberty/ ...is Replaced by church doctrine that has no relevance to the Real world we live in its pseudo education thats useless and caused the suffering of many christians . 2 of our family volunteer at a food shelter bank in our city for the homeless many of those we help are christian and in many cases you can see where they have been misguided...its really sad.

5:40 By her own omission she was raised 'nominal' Chrisitan environment. I too was raised in similar environment at the beginning of modern sexual revolution in early 1970s, before being challenged by issues of death and hereafter which was to sole reason for trusting CHRIST for Eternal Salvation. I was lead to LORD by a Lutheran . God led me to IBC few years after a fell in LOVE with GOD's word. Had issues of Lust , but it is the HOLY SPIRIT who is grieved, my conscience, NOT some pastor or elder of any church. Frankly , our culture is preoccupied with sex, and is lukewarm to true Biblical spirituality.

A high body count isn't good for men, but it's terrible for women. It destroys their ability to pair bond.

How many is too many?
@iraqiimmigrant2908

@@obitouchiha6439 I found research that showed that just ONE, yes ONE notch of another man before marriage doubles the risk of divorce within 5 years in the US. Five notches from another man made the marriage success rate within 5 years plummet from 87.5% to 23%. There’s a reason why nearly every civilization for 1000s of years valued virginity before marriage. This civilization threw it away and is collapsing with divorce and low birth rates. Go figure.

@@obitouchiha6439 would it be a bad thing for a woman to marry as a virgin? I would suggest ONE prior to marriage is too many.
