Those old Richards knives were great, most of us had them as kids, I still have a shell handle Richards with celluloid oxhorn on it. Much tougher than you would think too, as a kid I have used one to scrape all the paint off a bicycle frame before repainting it.

You are so right! I was shocked to see how durable it is. I use it quite a bit in the kitchen then after abusing it prying can lids etc. I can sponge & rinse it off right in the sink with no worries..well of course I'll have to oil the spring & pivot regularly.

I'm very lucky to have found one in near mint condition & I use it quite a bit around the kitchen, It's lightweight handle, and forward weight prevents it from tipping & sliding off the plate like a heavier handled knife would do. Take Care My Friend!😊

That, sir, is an impressive collection. Those older knives are really cool. The TEW's are, of course, pure class. 👍

Would have been nice to see some from Joseph Rodgers . In my mind the best of them all. Handles made from mother of pearl and stag antlers.

I bought one of those Richards’ knives new in about 75. I’ve one of those George Wostenholm equal end pens, but it’s nowhere near as nice as either of yours. I’d love more of these. I need to keep my eyes peeled. That 1880/90 TEW Jack is wonderful! Of course you know what I think of the modern ones!

What you refer to as 'French Ivory' is most likely bone. Animal bones, particularly cattle bones, were used in great quantity in Sheffield when ivory proper became scarce/expensive to procure. Regards your new Eye Witness knives, they were of course mostly machine made unlike your earlier knives which would have been handmade from start to finish, one man usually taking on one process before handing it over to someone else for the next process.

The older Sheffield TEW knives are great but the new ones made by lee white for taylors eye witness leave a lot to be desired.
