What we know today as Mexico City and its immense metropolitan area was once a gigantic valley full of lakes that made up a rich ecosystem, where water flowed over thousands of hectares, and local indigenous civilizations prospered between islands. One of them is the settlement where today's Mexico originated.
The Spanish domain from the 16th century began a race to control the usual floods with a policy of successive drainages that ended up drying up almost all the lake space, at the same time that in the 20th century under Mexican domination an unstoppable urbanization turned it into an area populated by 22 million inhabitants, with a waste and abuse of water resources still abundant underground, which have pushed the city to the limit.
Today, Mexico City suffers constant water cuts and what is worse, the sinking of the city under its clayey soils, less and less compact due to the depletion of water, is unstoppable and has unforeseeable consequences.
