This whole video made me so happy! I'll never forget how I felt when I asked a herpetologist a question about a salamander I found and got the response that those were questions that people who study them ask and that we didn't have the full answers to yet. It fired my imagination and my love for nature and biological sciences even more. Learning is something active and something we're all always doing together! Knowledge isn't static, it's about discovery, and the only way to discover is to look, listen, question, and yep, get stuff wrong. I forget who said it but a favorite quote of a friend of mine from a writer they admired was "Try. Fail. Try again. Fail better." Heck yeh!!!!!

I watch a lot of science youtube, and this addendum/correction video is one of the most important I've seen. This gets to an aspect of science that a lot of lay people don't grok about the scientific process. Science is collaborative, and we're at our best when we're reading each other's work and helping improve it via honest critique. In my graduate department, we had to have one person on our thesis committee who wasn't associated with our sub-specialty or particularly collaborating with our advisor. I was kind of disappointed when I got to the end of my thesis defense and all he had to say was, "Well I didn't understand a word of it but if [your advisor] is happy then I'm happy." It felt like just getting a box checked by default. The other committee member did ask me a tough question that I got wrong, mixing up my first model/method with the one I settled on finally (the model was less important than the optimization method I was using, in terms of my own research, and so I hadn't really read up on it again in a while and I just got confused in the moment) so I wasn't just let through for no reason, although when my advisor corrected me and I was able to explain my mistake, the other member was fine with approving my defense, but it felt oddly better to get called out than to just get the wave through from the other guy. I think science educators should consider using this video as an example of how science should be done, being honest and open and clearly communicating corrections when they're necessary, and the way in which that process can lead to new insights.

Thanks so much for this amazing comment. I sort of suspended work on the next species video to make this one, because while the mistake itself was minor, the resulting discussion was really cool, and it was such a great example of exactly what you're talking about here - not hand-waving away the error, but exploring it, and seeing where it takes us. The triangulate has sort of a solid strip going down the back with diamond-shaped marks along it, while the Noble false widow has sort of a whole "picture" on its back (some people say it looks like a skull). Do an image search for both (use the scientific names - Steatoda triangulosa vs Steatoda nobilis), and look at the patterning. That should help you out!
@Amused_Comfort_Inc
Жыл бұрын
@@travismcenery2919 Wheee, you know what it was, the juvenile stages of the nobilis vs an adult male triangulosa that had me so confused. I had to look at the growth stages charts of each. Thought I knew, been collecting for years, but it was so weird finding juveniles nobilis after only have triangulosas for so long, never seen them except adult females. I have several triangulates that are comfortable living together, but i introduced a male nobilis i had found by accident and one of my triangulosas were killed, so identifying these marks means a lot to me, thank you so much !
@travismcenery2919
Жыл бұрын
I hadn't even thought about the juvenile stages! I'm not great at identifying juveniles, to be honest, I'm learning as I go, spider by spider. Some are obvious, but within a given genus, it can definitely be tricky. Species-level identification is nigh on impossible with some.

This is why when I hear a pseudoscientist or pseudo-archaeologist etc, mention “dogma” in science I just laugh. THIS IS science. Conversation, exchange of ideas, correction.

Great content, really enjoying your channel. Just been looking around the house to see if I can identify which spiders are living here. Sadly I can only find egg sacks at the moment, no adults to be seen.

Give it a bit of time. There aren't many in my house at the moment either, but as it warms up, I expect to see more.

I’m expecting it soon. We had all sorts of Steatoda here in the summer. Ah well, still got my pet GHS to watch until they hatch out.

What happened at the end Travis? Is this an editing mistake? A mistake in a video about mistakes? WHAT!!!

That's exactly what it was. It was a bit I cut, but moved to the back in case I changed my mind, then forgot it was there when I rendered the video. Didn't realize it until someone pointed it out in the comments - then laughed pretty hard when I saw it.

As a kid a magnifying glass was the best I could do. If you don't already have a stereo microscope, you should really think about getting one. It will blow your mind with the detail. I debated Amscope for a couple years, wondering if I would regret the purchase as they are much more affordable than some of the top tier brands but, I can tell you it's great. I would urge you to spend a bit more and get a zoom model with a trinocular head so as you advance the possibility for filming is already in place. I think there are a few budget microscope dealers out there, but I believe they are all the same just differently branded. Look for the best deal and wait for sales. Keep up the good work!

I actually do have a stereoscope (got it a while after starting this channel) and yes, they're amazing! Mine's VERY basic, but decent quality - got it from B&H photo. I think it does 20x magnification. I've used it a fair bit, both on dead spiders I've found and on live ones I've knocked out for observation (they were all fine afterward).

@@travismcenery2919 I believe mine does 90x with the Barlow lens. It's really quite astounding. I've gotten back into spiders after a decade of mycology. I can't believe the quality of books out there since I was a kid. One of particular note for the microscope is "Spiders of North America-an identification manual" by D. Ubick. It's very familiar to me with it's dichotomous keys, much like mushroom ID. Only problem is here in Michigan few spiders are out yet. I did find a rather cool Gnaphosidae crawling across the snow the other day. I hope to see your channel grow.

That sounds like a great book to have on the shelf - I'll have to check it out. Thanks for mentioning it. I LOVE the stereoscope, but sometimes you need to get in even closer. And thanks for the good wishes!

I also recorded on my cell phone a female orbital web spinner doing a mating dance with her male opposite, lasted about 3 minutes before she gift wrapped him for the kids . They communicate it seems with the very end of their legs. Both of em had perfect timing with their legs , like a human hand rapidly pressing key pad numbers .
