I used to work just up the road from the Magic Roundabout for the European Division of a US company. US visitors often picked up hire cars from the office, so we had drivers who were in a manual (stick shift) for the first time, driving on the left hand side, and in those days had no concept of even a simple roundabout, let alone a Magic one. Always looked forward to hearing what happened after they left the office!

I can’t imagine Americans handling that. I live in the US and they can’t even properly design a regular one. The Americans, of course, have no idea what you're even talking about. I mean, we've heard of the intersection, but until today I had no idea the TV show even existed, and have definitely never seen it. The intersection, of course, is the sort of thing that would terrify most of us. Roundabouts aren't common here, and while the regular ones don't bother me at all (I like not having to stop or wait for a light) the last time my girlfriend was in the car when I went around one she absolutely panicked. There was screaming while going through it, followed by at least ten minutes of complaining that it existed.

I live a few streets away from it. It's great. People who remember the old roundabout tell me it had a bad accident record because people would try to take it too fast while they were on it, while people who'd got frustrated queuing to get onto it would try to dart out into non-existent gaps. What really helps the Magic Roundabout avoid accidents is that very few people are confident that they fully understand it and everyone knows the chances of meeting someone who's confused and terrified are quite high, so everyone slows down. Even the boy racers. The trick is simple - just treat it as a series of mini-roundabouts and ignore the fact there's a circle thing in the middle.

Scared I was a few months ago upon a visit but the general Aggy nature of road users was moot and I felt fine. That bloody roundabout! When I was a small kid we passed through Swindon on our holiday one year. On the approach to it, my neighbour who was driving told me to look out for The Magic Roundabout. Me, not having a clue what he meant, thought it was going to be a fun-fair style ride in the middle of a huge grassy roundabout. Imagine my massive disappointment... On another trip, he told me to look out for a White Lion (A chalk one on a hillside somewhere). Me, not realising that, thought he'd said a 'White Line', so I spent a good hour with my eyes glued to the road surface, looking for a really long White Line in the middle of the road!! Truly one of the most terrifying experiences I had on English roads during my 2010 UK visit was when I was driving through Swindon and mistakenly encountered this traffic oddity. When I arrived in the city, I was praying to myself, driving these unknown streets muttering, "Please don't take me to the Magic Roundabout...please don't take me to the Magic Roundabout...please don't take me to the Magic-- *CRAP."* I somehow made it half-way around until I saw the M5 sign and promptly exited that morass of circling cars, heading back to the motorway to try my Swindon entrance again. I am a North American driver who was having a hard enough time driving on the left side of the road, let alone trying to do that _and_ steering madly around a moving parking lot. It is tricky - because trucker enter mini roundabout well before passenger car. Only problem is lenght of vehicle. Rules say: give priority to traffic approaching from your right. Passenger car was way far behind, still on previous island when HGV decided to go. Another rule explain this behavior: Rule 190: Multiple roundabouts. At some complex junctions, there may be a series of mini-roundabouts at each intersection. Treat each mini-roundabout separately and follow the normal rules. When truck is already on circle before car arrive - has to go. And car need to wait and let him finish. It is not pretty manuveur but this is how mini roundabout works. Always let someone to finish before enter. And only enter when is a "enough" gap. Otherwise we all stuck there.

There was one in Benfleet and it's now gone. It was hilarious watching learner drivers pile down the A13/A130. It got utterly confusing when the new flyover was built as many people for a few days simply forgot which way to go around the island resulting a few dings. They do work as with the old island to get from Benfleet to the A130 was a quick turn right and right again. Now it's a mega trundle all the way around the island. The only feature of the new island is that it's near Benfleet Wimpy Bar... the joy! Failing that there are the delights of the Hemel Hempstead "Magic Roundabout".... that despite the look of complexity, it works. Even my daughter can negotiate it without having a crash.

I used to live (was stationed) "just up the road" and remember vividly my first ever encounter with said roundabout. I'd only just passed my test and had never seen anything like it before. my mate in the passenger seat said, "pick and exit point and just go for it". Seemed to work just fine.

As someone who worked for Swindon Council. for 20 years, this roundabout is definitely magic! Nice to see the digital sign I gave Advertisement Consent is up and going and not causing any distractions to motorists 😏

It can cope with parallel flows of traffic more effectively than a conventional large roundabout between the main roads. At present, there is a major alteration being done west of it, west of the old Fleming Way/Corporation St junction (which used to be a roundabout) which has disrupted normal traffic. All done without any traffic signals either - although they are popular now in many parts of Swindon.

There is one in Colchester which I always find flows well compared to others around it. Also worth noting that in urban planning design, making the road uncomfortable to drive, like in the case of an unusual design like this, does deliberately slow traffic, which a) makes it safer because of lower combined energy in the event of a collision, and b) The slower speed actually allows for greater throughput of vehicles because slower vehicles drive closer together and as such you can get more in the same space than you would at a higher speed.

The wear pattern on the tarmac is like a long-term experiment into drivers ignoring badly designed lane markings. The Road Research Laboratory would be pleased!

Good thing about the the Hemel one is that the big central roundabout is full of bushes surrounding the river that goes through it so you can only really see 1 mini roundabout in each direction which is less confusing for people new to it. The only real problem however also is due to the river because the local ducks tend to pop out with their offspring and mooch across the middle of the mini roundabouts without a care in the world so the traffic then grinds to a halt !

We also have one in Colchester , we call it the Greenstead Roundabout and when you take your driving test and set off from the nearby Whitehall Test Centre you have a 50% chance of going on it. Luckily for me I went the other way that day.

Just outside Hatton Cross tube station on the south side of Heathrow, we have one of these roundabouts. Personally, I'm a fan. Especially when there is traffic clogging up on one side, leaving you the choice to go the other way.

First time I encountered it was when my boss at the time sent us, Antipodean sheep shearer’s, out to do a job in a van with a large trailer. He had an evil smirk when he sent us on our way. Somehow I managed to negotiate it, and got on the correct road out. Went back on my motorcycle the next wet day, and sussed it out. Works fine with the disciplined British drivers. Doubt it would with the driving habits prevalent in some other parts of the world.

I did my motorbike test in Swindon and it took me onto the magic roundabout. I hadn't heard of this before so it came as a bit of a shock, mainly the middle roundabout that goes anti-clockwise. I still passed though, so that was nice.

There was a combine multiple roundabout in Colchester that’s 5 roads plus two shopping Center entrance and the entrance to what was a through road past the university but now blocked off except for busses. You can go around it in either direction but most people tend to go the same direction anyway. My husband used to take it the wrong way round when everyone else had followed each other into a dead stop. Terrified me.

I rode around - over...? - it in the 80's with a group of biker buddies - we all found it a tad alarming. I read a lot of the comments on here about the apparent lack of accidents - my main recollection is that there was a sea of white glass and red / orange plastic crumbs everywhere around it...!!

The concept of the roundabout is a very good one. It sets a certain standard and that is important so that road users know what to expect. They have a certain capacity and planners should learn to just deal with that. These multi-roundabout designs and the stupid spiral things are an abomination. Commuters get used to them after a couple of weeks and that makes everyone think they work but people new to the area or heading off on a different journey often struggle with them, annoying the pre-programmed commuters, ending up on the wrong road, or occasionally having an accident. What often happens is that when design capacity is being exceeded, planners make things even worse by adding traffic lights when what is required is a clean sheet of paper and a new approach. I know of roundabouts with lights that start to work better every time the lights have a fault!

Apparently the magic roundabout (the TV show) used all the film footage from a French children's programme. But instead of translating the script, they made up completely new stories that sort of matched what was happening on screen. And this makes complete sense. Translating a script would be very difficult when you're bombed off your face, but making stories up is really easy. 😁

I've known about the Magic Roundabout for many years but it's only in the last year I've been to Swindon and driven through/around it. I've gone through the system twice over the course of a few months and it's absolutely fine. It works very well and doesn't cause any confusion for a driver who hasn't used it before. It's very intuitive and easy to navigate. It should be rolled out to other large, busy roundabouts/junctions.

So much better than the current trend of enormous multi lane roundabouts, which let people get up to 60mph and are so wide that it only takes one person ignoring the lane markings to cause a crash. They always have piles of broken glass and bumper parts at each exit to show how well they work - one near me (where I got smashed off the road 5 years ago) now has a lane permanently coned off because there are so many accidents.

There used to be an experimental roundabout on the Halesowen bypass, it was made out of old car tyres and would be altered every few weeks. They did the alteration over the weekends so Monday mornings used to be when I learned new and interesting profanities as the driver of the vehicle made his confusion and displeasure audible! They stopped fannying about with the experiment and made it permanent, but I still have mixed memories of those Monday mornings whenever I pass through the roundabout, which I haven't done for a long time now!

A lot here are saying about High Wycombe's one. The only difference is that the middle island is bigger and elongate, and the two-way sections are longer. Showing more clearly what is actually going on; it's a two-way road in a loop, connected to side roads with mini roundabouts. It's just because the Swindon's one has a perfectly circular middle island, and that gets wrongly called a roundabout, that it gets the attention.

I was born not far from this roundabout and when I was cycling in the early 60's you couldn't get on to this roundabout as traffic was moving too fast, 30mph + and was probably about 1/8 mile round, so this solution was and is great for all traffic (by the way, Fleming Way was part of the old Swindon to Oxford canal, that is where Bridge Street got it's name in Swindon, and running through Shrivenham and through one of the arches of Arcorn Bridge
