Within Slovakia, adjacent to an active gold mine is the remnants of a once large supervolcano. This supervolcano, known as Štiavnica, produced a catastrophic eruption 13.85 million years ago which destroyed the vast majority of this originally 4,000 meter high stratovolcano. Today, this volcano has been extinct for more than 10 million years, but provides a fascinating geologic site for volcanologists and other geologists to study.
Disclaimer: I am being paid to make this video by the European Union and NS Kožare as part of a series meant to share several wonderful geologic features within the nation of Slovakia.

Note: This video's thumbnail image displays what the Štiavnica volcano might have looked like during the opening 5 seconds of its major caldera forming eruption 13.85 million years ago. This volcano is now permanently extinct.
