I actually really like that Zebo was fair and reasonable. I find it frustrating when hauntings feel unjust, like the episode PushingUpRoses is referencing with the girl getting bit by the "chameleon" iguana. The girl actually discourages a kid in the pet shop from harassing the animals, including the lizard, and the lizard bites her and tries to take her place anyway. For some reason, I just really dislike when the supernatural forces punish someone who is cooperative or helpful to them. Like ghost stories where ghost hitchhikers attack drivers who are willing to pull over and help them. I realize that that might just be part of the writing decision; not all supernatural entities are meant to be fair or reasonable, or even necessarily intelligent, but personally I really like stories where bullies get their comeuppance and the characters that are kind/helpful/respectful to innocent beings, nature, the memory of the dead, get passed over by vengeful spirts & forces. It just has a certain feeling of cosmic justice that feels right to me.

The reason I found this episode gripping as a kid was because unlike most horror/haunting stories, it showed there was a *right* way to navigate a haunting, that there was a way to fix the problem and if you missed it, you were dead. Most haunting videos have either an unhappy ending, or one of those cliffhangers that show the monster will come back. By showing an instance of a successful resolution, it created the possibility in my head that if you were in a haunting, you could *screw up* your response, and get the bad outcome because of your own choices or lack of imagination. I found that terrifying, and made me put a lot of mental energy into other haunting stories to think of ways you could get out of the situation. Zeebo made all other hauntings more terrifying just for existing.
@HlootooThunderhammer

What an awesome analysis! You're right, that does sound scarier. I think too many horror situations rely on a downer ending to be scary, especially when it's obvious AF; BUT with the possibility of a happy ending, there's weight to the characters actions and thus TENSION. Remember that? Tension? Can we have more of that in movies today please?

See, I have almost the exact opposite feel to Roses. Danger has at best a middling role in horror to me. It can provide a twisted, uncomfortable feeling when you have powerful, unreasonable and unpredictable antagonists in horror. But to me those types of enemies always felt like cheap cruelties designed to f*ck over the protagonists whenever the plot demanded it. But the ones that are equal parts creepy and bound by fair rules are the ones I remember most fondly for creeping me out. Those forces felt more ancient, solid and real. In those stories it felt like if the protagonists failed or died it was on THEM; not because the antagonists were wildcards and they were doomed from the start. Take Zeebo. He prooves he has ridiculous powers of teleportation, manipulation of the real world, etc. And is more than capable of tormenting those that mock him (and most likely infinitely worse) But when the protagonist honors his demands AND sweetens the deal with an offering...the scales are balanced. Perfect. That's both creepy AND lends symmetry to the story.

I think that's why fairies and the like were so feared back then. They were, often times, straight up a**holes, but then there were those who followed some sort of code, an arbitrary one, but one nonetheless. In addition to your point about it being a person's fault if something bad happened to them, it was scary because it could happen so _casually_ . Just saying Thank You or offering a piece of clothing is enough to piss them off... _for no reason_ .

I think that’s why I hate so many horror stories that have “rules”. You set up a set of rules that the monster, killer, evil cult, etc. are bound by and must follow, only to throw it out for a “scary” twist that anyone who has seen a horror film could see coming a mile away. Unless the rule is creatively broken (not actually doing what was required ala The Ring or Drag me to Hell) it just comes off as cheap and wasting our time.

I remember watching this when it first aired. It's easily one of the creepiest shows I'd seen as a child; I was a latchkey kid (I was trained to do all the housework, cook for myself, and even handled knives at only the age 4), so the idea of being home alone and being stalked by an intruder - clown ghost or otherwise - was scary. I think it taps into the anxieties a lot of kids were having around that time. You come home to an empty house, make some dinner, and you don't know when your folks are coming home. The sun is setting, it's getting dark, and it seems so quiet. And then you hear something - or someone - in the other room, but it _can't_ be your parents, they won't be home for hours. And then maybe you realize that, despite doing it a million times before, you forgot to lock the door when you got home from school. And it's too late now. They'll hear you if you run. They'll hear you if you grab the phone. And even if you managed to get there, who would you call? Your parents are gone. Your friends won't believe you. The stranger is outside your room now, and no one's coming to save you... Anyways. I also recorded the SNICK premiere, all the way back on the warm night of 8/15/1992. I can't believe that was 28 years ago. It doesn't feel that long...

She goes on to rescue her only to find herself starting to turn porcelain and unable to escape as well. So many things about that episode unnerved me. I think its works pretty effectively as a kid's story, especially since the clown is absent for many scenes. The smoke scene is actually pretty scary imo, because it suggests something sinister and Josh's imagination is able to fill in that blank. If you ever get the chance look up the historical Illinois tragedy "Showman's Rest" it's an entire disused cemetery filled with circus people and animals that died in a huge train wreck in the 1900s in Downers Grove, I think. Somewhere in the west Chicago suburbs anyway. I grew up in Kankakee and my Mom would drive us there every October when I was little and tell me and sister the story.

"Weegee?" Yes, Weegee, alias Arthur Fellig, famed NYC crime photographer. They called him "Weegee" as he always seemed to beat the police and/or emergency services to the scene, which led some to call him a human Quija board. I see three reasons we might be afraid of clowns. 1. To be honest, you never know who's behind the mask. 2. Generally speaking, they're meant to draw in, and entertain children. So, considering number 1, a clown might be a predator. 3. Anything that represents the warped version of something innocent is scarier than anything intended to be scary.

Nevermind the fact that the kid walked into a store and bought a box of cigars without being carded or the clerk just looking at him. But he couldn't just get a box of cigars for the ghost I'm not expert I rarely ever smoke a cigar but there ghost was an avid cigar smoker probably puffed on quality brand cigars which are kinda expensive I don't think that kid could afford a box of acceptable cigars with his allowance pay grade in middle class America, and I don't think the ghost of an avid cigar enthusiast would find a cheap box of cigars (which would still probably be above the kid's pay grade) to be an acceptable peace offering

I also disagree that a ghost needs to be malicious for a ghost story to be creepy! Sometimes the mere subversion of a ghost existing whatsoever is enough of a departure from reality to be unexpected or unsettling, especially to realize how often our child protagonists were in the direct presence of said ghost.
@pushinguproses
3 жыл бұрын
I never said the ghost needed to be malicious in order to be creepy. I said he didn't pose a threat or any danger - obviously Zeebo was malicious enough to want to put a weird doll up to scare people, it just *wasn't* scary.

@@EtherBotGames I am aware. XD I'm saying: I don't think all ghosts need to just be this way. For THIS episode, because there was so much filler and they gave a glimpse of the in real life Zeebo, it needed some danger otherwise the teases were just kinda flat. In GENERAL, I don't think ghosts always need to be mean, but since this one already was, the episode needed some example to make it a bit more believable.

I'm confused, was the "non-fictional clown" that struck fear in people John Wayne Gacy...cause he's more of a serial killer that happened to do work as clown than a clown who was a serial killer. I know at the time the media painted Gacy as a "killer clown" but it kinda feels like he would fit more into a video about American serial killers like Bundy, Dahmer and Gein then a video about clowns. Was there another horrible real life clown I'm unaware of that used his clown persona to do terrible things?

I remember watching this as a kid, and even though you covered everything in the episode that came to mind, it still has a haunting allure that I can't quite place. It wasn't scary...
