Gratos recuerdos a mis Sensei.

To anyone who only sees the movement in the film and doubt its effectiveness I don't think you understand the true martial art use of the inner body not just the outer body that you see moving to generate the force behind any block or strike, this is why it takes years of practice to train the body to fight this way just like you breath as an instinct. The kata shown between 45m and 50m if your instructed properly is to teach how to use your whole body to generate energy while your feet are still and not rely on physical strength alone, i hope this comment makes one think and look at how you study your martial art not just what you see but what you don't see !

What you're referring to is technique, not the "inner body." Of course. That's the point of training in martial arts.

Wanmer 79 I couldn’t respond to your email problem with your address. As to message. Thanks for the correction I Don’t like texting and have large hands. As for the journey it has been good, I hope when you reach 79 yrs you will still be able to train and teach, it’s very rewarding. Your intellect needs to rise above insults.

How was free-sparring an exclusively JKA thing? It was common in Okinawa. And Goju Kai students would beat the piss out of Shotokan students when they would have meets. Another problem with outdated "documentaries" that rely on hearsay, folklore, and marketing from a single school. This is great to have a video record of the training to see what it looked like but the claims in the narration are ridiculous.

Depends on the style, but after the apereance of school karate, many schools gradually stoped jyu kumite and kakie kumite, not that it entierly desapeard but it became less common than before in common dojos

i have no doubt the techniques work but who needs to torture their body with years of conditioning when if your in combat you can use a fire arm to accomplish more devestating feats of combat or violence. martial arts as most practice now myself included do so for the self development of character not to be the next ipman and if we needed to use our martial arts we would be wearing shoes and not want a fight to be long lasting as that increases the risk of injury or death we would want to do just enough to escape .

Funakoshi taught a lot of katas but didn't teach his students proper application, leaving them to 'invent' applications. To discover their true application, one has to check old versions of the kata. I also feel sad when I see such bunkais.

Thing is, most of the moves in a kata are flexible in their meanings, so "inventing" is not necessarily a bad thing; it stimulates creativity and imagination, not to mention visualization and combat strategy. Of course, a sensei needs to supervise the techniques to make sure they're viable, but playing with the moves can be useful and educational.

I agree 100%. Funakoshi not teaching all the applications was not one of his finest moments.
