Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was just revealed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the latest Nintendo Direct. Because of how amazing this game is, people are very excited for it to finally get a remake, but there are 3 reasons why I think that it sucks that The Thousand Year Door is getting a remake.
Now I’ve always been someone that can see past the BS moves that Nintendo so commonly make, and I especially hate when Nintendo chooses to make money by taking advantage of people's nostalgia, which is exactly what Nintendo are doing with the remake for the Thousand Year Door.
Rather than Nintendo making another Paper Mario game for the Switch that actually has unique characters and a great story, they’re just taking the easy option. They know that this remake is going to sell very well, as there are lots of people who are nostalgic for this game who will go out and buy it.
Also with all the talk on KZitem and Twitter about how this is one of the best Mario games ever, people who haven’t played this game are going to be very interested in it. But in reality it’s just being overhyped by a large group of people who have been completely blinded by nostalgia.
It genuinely baffles me that more people don’t see that by Nintendo porting a fan favourite game to the Switch, they are just making money off people's nostalgia. What’s even worse is this is probably going to be a full priced port, taking 80 dollars right out of the pockets of nostalgic fans. If anything it should be put on the Eshop for around 30 or 40 dollars, not a full priced game.
Taking a step back from The Thousand Year Door remake and looking at the whole Nintendo direct for a second, there were so many ports and remakes of Mario related games. There was the Mario vs Donkey Kong remake, Luigi’s Mansion 2 remake, wave 6 of the Mario Kart booster course pass is basically a remake as it features some old tracks, and finally there was the Thousand Year Door remake.
Now I’m not completely against ports. Every single night for the past 5 years I’ve dreamed of an Animal Crossing: New Leaf port coming to the Switch. But seeing the truck loads of positive reception that all of these ports and remakes got, really makes me wonder how many new Mario games we are going to get in the Switch’s lifetime.
If Nintendo can just completely skip the process of actually having to be creative and think of new ideas for games, and instead just port or remake older ones, why would they make new games.
Remakes are cheaper, they take less money and resources to make, and fans go crazy for them, so other then Mario Bros. Wonder, I really don’t see many more brand new Mario games coming to the Switch between now and the end of 2024, which is really sad.
With the next game in the Paper Mario series being the remake of the Thousand Year Door, I don’t think the future of the series has ever looked worse.
That might sound weird, but just let me explain. With Paper Mario Sticker Star releasing back in 2012, and that game being awful, and colour Splash then releasing in 2016 and it being even worse, it showed that Nintendo didn’t take in any feedback from Sticker Star.
Origami King was then released and this game was fine, but still Nintendo didn’t listen to the feedback that fans gave after Colour Splash was released. So if Nintendo are in this constant cycle of not making new Paper Mario games that fans want, and see that the remake for the Thousand Year Door sells well, we’re probably just going to keep on getting remakes of older Paper Mario games, or get brand new Paper Mario games that just suck, and yeah, the video’s done.
