The Battle of Ankara, which holds a significant place in Turkish and world history, had a considerable impact on the survival of the Byzantine Empire for some more time. Following the battle, the Byzantines sent envoys to Timur, expressing their friendship and agreeing to pay tribute. They had no other choice. The Ottoman state treasury in Bursa was seized and taken to Timur, and all the Ottoman archives up to that date were destroyed. Many regions in Anatolia and Rumelia had to be abandoned. Timur restored the Anatolian beyliks and states to their former positions, allowing them to govern under his protection. Many towns around Istanbul were evacuated and handed back to the Byzantines. The Byzantines not only stopped paying tribute to the Ottomans but also expelled the Turks living in Istanbul from the city. In other words, the looting and destruction by Timur, the ruler of a Turkish state, once again put the Turks in a difficult situation. The state, which had not yet completed its founding phase, entered a long period of chaos. It remained in this chaotic state until the second founder, Mehmed Çelebi, came to power and lifted the Ottomans back up. The Ottoman Empire's defeat in this battle was a great disaster for Anatolian Turkish history. After the battle, Timur revived the Anatolian beyliks and brought them all, including the Ottomans, under his control. With Yıldırım Bayezid's defeat by Timur, the Ottoman territories were pulled back to the borders of the time of Murad I. As is known, before the war, Yıldırım Bayezid was about to conquer Istanbul, which he had been besieging for a long time. Byzantium was tired, hopeless, and worn out. In such a desperate moment, Timur, coming from the east, diverted Yıldırım's attention from Istanbul and came to the aid of Byzantium. Therefore, in Byzantine sources, the cause of the Battle of Ankara was attributed to divine reasons. The Byzantines interpreted the emergence of the battle and the defeat of Yıldırım Bayezid as the protection of the Virgin Mary and a miracle of Jesus.
