The Explosive Revelation of Neotropical Eyelash Vipers
"A Journey into the Complex World of Bothriechis schlegelii"
After nearly ten years of meticulous research and accumulation of scientific evidence, as well as documents of historical significance, a group of amphibian and reptile experts (herpetologists), led by Alejandro Arteaga and with the collaboration of Cesar Barrio Amorós (CRWild) in research conducted in Costa Rica, has made a groundbreaking discovery.
This advancement has materialized in the publication of a study that challenges the previous notion that a known species of snake, scientifically classified as Bothriechis schlegelii (Serpentes, Viperidae), whose species group went from having two (B. schlegelii and B. supraciliaris) to increasing its number thanks to classical and molecular methods. Thus, this work demonstrates that it is a complex comprised of 10 different species of eyelash vipers in the Neotropical region.
This study not only introduces the description of five new species but also revalidates three previously known names, recovering them from synonymy. This finding is a paradigm shift in our understanding of the biodiversity and taxonomy of these snakes, providing a new perspective on the complexity and richness of life in the Neotropical region.
