Most presses with a sliding carriage simply use ears on the base that mount roller bearings above the lower web of the upper truss.

The vent hole in the cap was likely more of a drain to return any oil the wiper scraped off the rod to the oil reservoir. No clue where the actual vent is, but I've always heard that the rubber fill plug deforms allowing air in/out.

Really well done -- Thanks! My weak link is the air pump -- it ceased to work at all more than a year ago. After complete disassembly, lube, line checks, air checks, etc etc etc, it simply will not work. Doesn't even make a noise. Root cause unknown mystery. At least the hand pump and bottle still work well. I'd replace the pump if someone had them for sale (without buying the whole assembly of bottle + pump).

Learning a lot watching this series; thanks for posting these videos and excellent job. I wanted to add that on the circa 2003 or so version of the same press it arrived from the factory welded at the top; my version had no bolts at all on the top rail. I believe the factory made that change (to make the top rail bolt-on) simply to reduce the size or volume of the shipping box.

There’s a helluva lot of videos on the internet of people making things. What’s rare amongst them however is attention to detail, something you’ve almost got rainman levels of. Colinfurze (if you can ignore his childishness) did a pretty neat electric hydraulic press build - including some attachments for forming shapes. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion he’s repurposed a brick bolster... keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your handiwork!

Well done I’m really enjoying the build. What was that at 8:38? the sound dropped out, it going to “what” it? 😂😂😂. You’re probably way ahead of me but I would put some nice big 125mm casters on it so it’s portable and gets it up higher for you. Cheers, Stuart.

Thanks Stuart, yeah, no idea what happened there lol. Unfortunately its home is under a fixed shelf, not sure if I have room for casters, but certainly would be a great addition. Cheers Mate.

Wondering why you decided to jbweld the breather hole instead of just welding it shut? I just started inverting mine and I'm staring at this tiny hole, and being a welder I'm seriously contemplating plug welding it. Maybe you thought of something I'm not? Awesome videos though, I've really enjoyed watching your 20ton series

G'day Mate, I filled it with JB due to it not being under any pressure when in use & it was easy. I can't see any problem welding it up if you feel the need. P.S. this press is still in operation today 3 years later, all working perfectly & no leaks on either the hydraulic or air sides. So glad I went to the effort of doing this. Cheers Mate.

Over here we have the same stuff from Harbor Freight. I'm following your build and can't wait to see it working. I am wondering how to bleed the air out of the hydraulics and how it works in the long term. I am planning to do the same to my press if your mod turns out well.
@TheAussieShed
4 жыл бұрын
G'day Mate, great question, the Hydraulics bleed really easily, even easier than before it was inverted, due to the pressure relief valve now being at the top rather than the bottom as it was originally. Couple of pumps on the handle, release the valve, the cylinder retracts & its bled. Works a treat, Cheers.

Man I am racking my brain trying to understand the fluid flow of all this. There's fluid up to a certain level and then air above that within the reservoir. There are pipes extending the fluid pickup to below the fluid level, but why doesn't gravity equalize the fluid level within the pipes to the reservoir when not pressurized? My (obviously flawed) logic is telling me that after hours of sitting there, the fluid/air level within the pipes should be the same as that outside of it...meaning the bottom of the pipe would be in fluid, but right at the pickup would be quite a bit of air. I assume there has to be some kind of vacuum preventing that from being the case, but I don't understand how the air would have been bled to create it.
@TheAussieShed

G'day Samuel, i'll try to explain. The initial amount of air in the pickup tubes is expelled after the first cycle. when the hydraulic cylinder is retracted by the springs it forces out any air that was present in the pickup tubes. The fluid level in the pickup tube is then maintained, due to the vacuum created by the pathway from the pickup tube, to the pump, to cylinder all being a sealed system. I have used the completed press many, many times since its completion & it only ever required the initial bleed, which as explained, it does all by itself on the initial cycle. For air to bleed back into the pickup tubes there would have to be a leak in either the pump or the main cylinder. Hope this helps, Cheers Mate.

My feeble little brain is beginning to grasp why you didn't mount it right side up to begin with and fabricate some attachments to make it right. Pro's and cons...still swinging in my mind Trev. Its looking bucking awesome though. I think it will need a sticker...just to make it look like a high end commercial unit.
