It's impressive how much effort you put into all this; I've personally used Anki for a few years just by adding individual words into a mining deck with the Yomichan one-button feature, which works fine for me. Speaking of learning Japanese on KZitem, I'd recommend looking up Japanese Vtubers like hololive and Nijisanji, who have seen a massive boom recently. There's a huge number of them doing various kinds of streams in natural spoken Japanese, and although their videos are usually unsubtitled long streams, you can find lots of JP subtitled highlight clips. I've improved my Japanese comprehension a lot in the past couple of years by watching Vtubers. It is a real rabbit hole though.

Hi Livakivi, thank you for the amazing video, and thanks for introducing me to Migaku! I purchased a subscription and it is working well at the moment, though I didn't have an opportunity to seriously mine sentences yet. One comment: at 24:26 I have a theory, I've learned from my Chinese friends trying to learn Japanese that a general rule of thumb is that two-character words shared with Chinese tend to have a On reading whereas words exclusive to Japanese tend to have a Kun reading. Of course, there are exceptions, and I don't even know why this is true in the first place, but I think it has to do with the fact that many modern Chinese words with two characters were borrowed from Japanese over the past few centuries. Anyways, 凸凹 is not a Chinese word but 凹凸 (outotsu in Japanese and aotu in Chinese - they sound the same with the exception of the つ) is a Chinese word. That doesn't explain why one takes kun readings and one takes on readings, but there certainly does exist some correlations.

I'm watching your Japanese study videos multiple times because you were super methodical in your studies and really remember how you got to where you are. My Japanese journey (and most other peoples..) was really haphazard. I'm quite surprised you're able to learn sentences with multiple unknown words. That might be because of the way you do Anki - vocab cards rather than sentence cards. But it also might be that your memory is better than mine. Probably both.

Adding 20 cards per day is quite impressive, specially considering how long you've doing it. Do you also review 20 cards per day? I'm currently studying french and adding/reviewing 15 cards per day for the last 7 months. There was a time when I did 20 and even 25 for a couple of weeks, but it was absolute madness, and considering that french is relatively close to spanish (my native lenguage), doing it in japonese seems pretty insane, unless of course if you're a cyborg like Stevijs 3. Although I'm no longer interested in learning japanese and I already have my method for sentence mining you're videos are always really amusing, keep it up!

I personally think that mass exporting cards is great for building a sentence bank. I don't think making a whole 12 or 24 eps deck in one go and then filter and delete cards is even doable in practice. I don't like making a card while watching an episode or a youtube video, I rather note the new words to mine in a notepad and then when it's time for me to add cards i use those words to browse my sentence bank and make cards with that. It won't be the exact sentence that I came accross during immersion, but it will have the audio, a picture, etc all ready to copy/paste in my new card. It's also great for making multiple cards with the same words in different context. I love your videos, LIVAKIVI, awesome for when I need a motivation boost :*

I found much better retention and learning when only displaying target word on the front. With the entire sentence on the front sometimes I'd learn the word from the way the sentence looks, and not the actual word. It was much better after I switch to only the target word on the front, sentence on back.

everything u said i feel the same way i started with a 1000 word beginner deck and i finished that, im new to sentence mining only 400 words mined but I was limiting myself by only pulling unknown words near the beginning of a sentence so that the sentence would have less time to give the answer away I never thought of something simple like bolding the target word. what i had planned to do for those words that were given away too easily through by context was alternating them from sentence to kanji cards using migakus new not type where u can just click a button and change the card into a audio, single word or a sentence card with 1 click .

taking individual cards with the sharex method takes about 1-3 minutes each for me. it might not seem long, but it adds up when you're making 20 or so in a row. another lazier way i found is using google keeps and putting 10 images with subs, extracting the text from all of them. copy paste the yomi chan definitions and you're done 30 cards in like 10 minutes. if you need audio, you can record them in mass and drag them into the finished cards. takes about 15 seconds per card

This series of videos are amazing! I got back into learning Japanese after a 5 year hiatus and this is so helpful. But I have a question that is very important for those who are trilingual... What language do you recommend learning in when you master two languages? I'm a Spanish native with an English comprehension of around 99% when it's daily stuff (I can read advanced material but have trouble with field-specific things). I play, consume media (no subs) and write stories in ENG. I decided to do everything in ENG bc I already forcedly have Spanish in my day-to-day life bc of where I live. My way of keeping ENG fresh in my day is to do everything in ENG or else I will forget, which is why even if I read, understand and write very well, I'm horrible with talking bc I don't speak ENG at all (and don't practice bc I don't want to speak, I want to understand and write). Since I'm at that level in ENG, I started learning JPN in ENG. It's kinda like a 2x1 deal where I can learn and perfect my skills in both languages at the same time but I'm worried it's gonna make my life difficult since sometimes I need to translate from SPAN to ENG to JPN to get a word. Most of the time I do not translate back to SPAN, I don't need it. But when learning back words in JPN with Duolingo I realized some words I may need to when getting into certain things. Also bc I know Argentinean Spanish which works with Mexican Spanish (which is most ways media is dubbed, also called "Neutral Spanish") but it doesn't work well with Spain's Spanish. Similar to how British English and American English differ in some things. Would it be good to keep learning JPN in ENG or should I learn in Spanish instead bc that's my native language? Thanks!

Hello Liva, I have a question about your card format. I also have been doing the bolded word method, but I'm getting nervous about it. I've been doing this and mainly testing myself on the word and the reading while trying to have the initial comprehension of the sentence first (I don't read it every time), but I'm starting to get worried that I am forming context dependant memories from the visual cue of the sentence. Do you single out the word to get an idea of what each sentence is trying to test you on? And further, do you test the reading of everything in the sentence or just the target word ? I still feel like I enjoy sentence cards the most compared to vocab cards, but not sure if I'm making my reviews too easy by just testing myself on the target word. Also have you been doing this style since finishing core 2k6k ? Wondering if you felt there was a difference in comprehension or recall ability after switching from vocab to sentence with bolded words.

Do you have any advice on sentence mining with games? Currently I'm using a texthook / ShareX OCR, which works fine for regular text, but audio is a bit more of a problem, since you can't really "rewind" a game like you can a video (as easily anyways), my current method is using Nvidia's "Instant Replay" feature which lets you save the previous X minutes of gameplay, and then getting the audio from there. Was just curious if you (or anyone seeing this) had any better method than that. Edit: Also adding on, everything else in this video was super helpful with figuring out how to start sentence mining for myself, thanks!

What is your opinion on the tradeoff between getting in more immersion and creating sentence-mining cards? I recently finished reading KonoSuba volume I, which took me several weeks and over 1000 highlighted unknown/useful terms. All in all a worthwhile experience, but when I went to export my highlighted terms and type them up as cards, I noticed it took me almost 30 minutes to write only 40 cards. I found this to be infuriating and have been wondering whether it's worth sentence mining at all, or just keep reading and learn purely by immersion?

Hello, JP learner here and I have an opposing viewpoint. I have done a lot of anki and sentence mining, and my take away is that simplicity is just more efficient. Creating cards is a huge time investment that in my opinion doesn't pay off. Also it is not a super fun way to spend your time, and requires a good computer setup. Anki is great with preexisting decks, for rote memorization (works great with kanji for instance, or Core 2000 words). But I would emphasize having fun with immersion and taking it slow. The best is to get material appropriate for your level, which is where a teacher will come in handy. Take it from a 4-year JP learner who's tried all methods out there! In the end what matters is what works for you, and that you feel that you're having fun with the language. I would recommend the Shadowing series. It is a short skits compilation (read+listen+repeat if you want), very natural Japanese, with wide variety of social situations (family, friends, business, etc). Several levels exist. You can find the audio and text on thai or viet channels on YT, not hard to find!

@@MyOrangeString Thanks for this. To this day I still have not found the energy to make sentence mining, and, lately, I've been focussing on vocabulary anyway. My main form of input is just reading what I can, like Wikipedia etc... thanks for your wisdom of 4 years and your wonderful advice :)

Hello! can i ask you something…do you recommend start sentence mining without knowing any Japanese? or it’s better to start learning the basics?

Definitely better to learn the basics, otherwise what to mine itself is its going to be really confusing as you won't be able to tell where a word ends and begins, what's a grammar point, what's a conjugation of a word, etc. Many people recommend a minimum of at least 1000 to 3000 words from a premade deck and some simple grammar awareness building (e.g through Tae Kim's online book) before sentence mining, and I think that's a good idea for the reasons I mentioned before.
