I use the "6 easiest gears" rule. For recovery, I often put our twins in a bike trailer behind a mountain bike and tool around at anything under 20 kph. To keep from stressing muscles and to keep a nice cadence, however, I only use the six easiest gears from a 12 speed rear cassette.

I think this is the first time I've heard or read the recommendation of doing "spin-ups" in a recovery ride so I googled to see if others recommend it. This was taken from another website: It can be beneficial to include some short ‘spinups’ in your ride. This involves a 10 second burst of super-high cadence, but super-low power. Do not think of it as a sprint! Doing these encourages your body to release human growth hormone, which helps your muscles recover and repair from the ride before. This short burst of muscle activation also helps them relax. You coax the muscles gently back into action, and doing this means the fibres loosen off - which helps ease out any DOMS that you may be feeling. If you choose to incorporate spinups into your ride, make sure you allow around 5 minutes recovery between each, and only do 4-5 in each ride. BTW if I drink coffee on a recovery ride that is a sure fire way to have it no longer be a recovery ride.

Great video, shall use the 3 hard 1 easy day method. Careful with the "one day off" as I've discovered that 1 day has turned into 10!. Back at it tmrw morning though. My job is incredibly physical but weirdly, feeling worse for the time off the bike. Lost all motivation.

No steep climbs, well that's me out. Where I live, planning a flat route is almost impossible. 500m of altitude gain per 40km is pretty much the minimum here.

Keeps you metabolism spinning over. More metabolism going on, the more those little processes inside your body are happening like muscle repair and energy store replacement, cell replenishment, waste removal etc. I'm no doc but it makes sense to me.

My tip. I find that immediately after a recovery ride, or even a few hours after a hard ride, that a hot soak (preferably at the local onsen) does a world of good. Throw in epson salts if you do this at home.

I have a persistent ITB issue and recur only occasionally if I run longer. Hence chosen cycling instead. But noticed that high cadence drill almost always initiates ITB pain back slightly and I had to give up the ride. ~ Debanjan (from India)

In relation to recovery rides, what is happening physiologically for riders when the rest day comes during a 3 week Tour? It's well established that you must go out (recall the '08 TDF when, supposedly, Christian Van de Velde didn't go out at all and then lost 4 minutes the next day) but how is this done specifically?

It sounds right to me. I mean why should we believe sedentary recovery is better than a mildly active recovery. With a mildly active recovery, are we not helping blood circulation and the recovery function it provides?

There are people in the comments who's circumstances mean they can't precisely follow the video. I think that the way you ride will give you adaptations that will make things work for you. If you live in a very hilly area, then that's fine, ride the hills, just slower and for less time than your normal or max effort. If you don't drink coffee, don't drink coffee. A sprinter for example is going to have a very different recovery ride to an extreme multi-day endurance athlete. The key thing with training (and why it is so complicated, vague, and expensive) is to carefully listen to your body.

Interesting: so 10 or so seconds of high rpm low resistance is good. That's another argument in favour of riding fixed. On a typical local ride on rolling country lanes with no big hills, my cadence ranges from very low on the ups to as high as I can physically manage on the downs, and with the right ratio, the in between is relaxing.

So here is a question for GCN. I do not drink cold drinks (soda, beer, and such). I also do not drink coffee. So what can be substituted for coffee and cold drinks? I ask because on several video's there is either a coffee stop or two with a beer at the end of a ride. Thank you all.

Black or green teas increase relaxation and with plenty of antioxidants on top. I don't drink coffee when out but I always ask for which infusions a coffee shop has, the selection is normally quite a lot more than you would expect, find ones you like and don't go without your little treat ;)

A common mistake when doing recovery rides is riding on the tops, and neglecting technique and position. Doing 90 minute ride while sitting up bolt upright (as demonstrated in this video) will just tighten up your hamstrings.

That was really great thanks guys. Difficult one for me- I use Trainerroad on a TT program and that’s 3 hard sessions a week I can “just” manage - TBH I’ve been ill after each phase end (base 1 & 2) so need to look at that- never thought I’d do a recovery ride as I wasn’t quite getting the real purpose behind it (obvious as the word recovery might be). You’ve contextualised it really well. I can’t express how helpful this video was for me. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🦅

TrainerRoad is notorious for having too much high intensity in their programs - 2 high intensity sessions a week has been proven in numerous academic studies to be the optimal number, any more than this and you see no addition benefit, but detrimental effects on your recovery and physiological adaptations.

Ya. Hate how all the built for everyone plans are sweet spot training. They will get you in shape fast but it's almost impossible to maintain. I follow the every other day method thst runners usually use with Monday off to go for a jog or fly fishing and have Saturday as a long ride and Sunday as a medium length ride with no structure usually with a slower friend.
