I don’t know if this is still the case, but when I was a child growing up in Venezuela, military service was compulsory for any 18-year-old man not in university … and since my family were very much Venezuelan Navy people, I assumed the Venezuelan Navy was where I’d wind up - which REALLY sucked, because I couldn’t swim! But by the time I turned twelve, I’d figured out that our family were also very much university people, and that because my uncle/godfather was one of the highest-ranking Venezuelan Navy dudes - a heart surgeon, who ran all the naval hospitals - I was 100% guaranteed a free pass _out_ of military service if I wanted it, and into the best public university. In fact, knowing me a little better than I knew myself, my family would’ve been horrified had I entered the armed forces - even on an officer track, set to fast-forward - because they saw me as a decidedly artsy, bookish sort, and their consensus opinion seemed to be that my skill-set would be better applied elsewhere. (I should explain: the anti-intellectualism which has spread like a virus throughout the U.S.A.? It doesn’t exist in Venezuela … in fact, being smart and well-educated is highly-prized across all sectors of Venezuelan society.) ((I should further clarify that Venezuela is not paradise: homophobia is really rampant, even in Caracas, and steering our society away from that has been slow going … although there’s been progress. A variant of sexism, in some ways different from the U.S.A.’s, was also pretty rampant through the ‘80s … but there we’ve made *significant* progress, although there’s still quite a ways to go.)) I might’ve found a niche in the armed forces - again, my uncle/godfather was no dum-dum - so something in intelligence or the Venezuelan Air Force might’ve suited me … but again, mostly because family connections would’ve really smoothed the road. So it’s triply bizarre that these corporate U.S. bozos are paying $18,000.00 to play at army. The whole point of inheriting generations of accrued privilege is that it allows you to bypass a great deal of hardship … in order to devote yourself to relieving the needless hardships of others, whether that’s by being a doctor or a public servant or a member of the clergy or a public interest lawyer or a community organizer: it’s a privilege you’re supposed to pay forward and around, to whoever most needs it. Imagine what someone with *real* hardships - born to generational poverty, having limited access to resources, being racially profiled at every turn, enduring soft and hard discrimination for belonging to a disenfranchised cohort - could do with those $18,000.00!! So these corporate idiots fail in three ways, and seem like prime examples of how capitalism distorts the value of everything: they’re in a great position to help others, but 1) instead they’ve been convinced that they’re somehow … lacking in something? … and so 2) they’ve been tricked into PAYING $18,000.00, an amount some people would dream about winning at lottery, 3) to let some ignorant sadistic grifters mortify their flesh for a few days!! And all because these corporate idiots want to *play* at suffering, in a controlled, restricted, no-stakes playground? Yeah … how incredibly alpha. You know what’s alpha? Finding meaning in your livelihood, and otherwise lounging around playing guitar, reading, painting, sometimes eating fruit right from the branch as it ripens on the tree, having laid-back slutty good friends who seldom give you a hard time about anything, so you seldom hassle them either, and doing what you can to make sure everyone can access that paradisiacal field of ripe fruit guitar painting happy slut-friends. Jesus Christ. I’m also a U.S. citizen, and let me tell you: one of my home countries worries me much more than the other right now, and it’s not the one everyone in the U.S. has strong but completely uninformed opinions about.

Some men will do anything to avoid learning basic life skills and emotional intelligence. Your wife doesn't need you to crawl through a bog, sir. She needs you to take on some of the emotional labor in the relationship, to understand and support her, and to help with day-to-day life responsibilities. No one wants to keep a man-child around " just in case" a war breaks out or bad guy breaks into the house.

Before the Knights program, my hammer was always on the other side of a bog when my family needed it. Now, thanks to my extensive training, I can crawl through that bog on my stomach, dragging my face in it, grab my hammer, then kick myself backwards like a toddler all the way back to my family - and I don't even feel embarrassed afterwards. That's just what REAL MEN do.

Did they call it, "wilderness camp" by chance? Sounds like where they sent my 'troubled' class and pitched it as a fun field trip...it was basically being yelled at and hiking for hours and hours through a swamp in the pouring rain. Even our teacher who brought us felt bad and finally stood up for us...they kicked us out and we had to wait at the road in the middle of wilderness and wait 4 hours for the bus in the rain...afters days of being drilled to death. One kid lagged behind so they made us all wait while he had to RUN with as much firewood as he could hold, over 2km to one camp, back again, and keep doing it til all the firewood for 30 kids camps was moved from one camp to the next...in the rain. He did it faster than they thought possible as a message..."i am not weak...you guys are just assholes"
