Became a Ventures fan in 1960, while I was serving with our Air Force. Still love their sound. I have over 300 of their songs on a flash drive that I play while driving ALONE in our SUV.

It was a limited edition 1996 Ventures Model Strat. Gerry has a Clapton Strat. When Fender built these, Gerry opted for the same lace sensors that the clapton Strat had at that time. They were available in the USA for 1996 only. You could get them in Japan from 1996-1999 or 2000

That's not even debatable... lol... The VeNtuReS ARE the number one instrumental R&R Band in history! Biggest selling, Biggest following... Hell, they outsold THE BeaTles 2 to 1 in Japan alone. They recorded over 250 different (studio recordings) albums! I love The Shadows, don't get me wrong! However, what is The Shadows' greatest selling hit? "Wonderful Land"?? Come on... Walk Don't Run and Hawaii Five-O alone blew away The Shadows by far! If I'm wrong, please let me know!! ;-))

The Shadows had 69 chart entries 49 of them top ten and six of them no 1. Wonderfull Land was at no 1 for six weeks. All of The Shadows hits were original guitar instrumentals written for them or by them. The Ventures only had two or three minor hits and never had a no 1 All their recordings are covers, some of them played by session musicians. Have a look at my "The Ventures The Shadows Apache comparison video.

I can't help but wondering if Bogle is secretly pissed-off that they kicked him off of Lead Guitar. Also, where the heck are the Mosrites?
@sonofalbasteelman3842
9 жыл бұрын
retrorex I know what you're talking about. His bass lines sometimes had too many notes as if to compensate for the loss of the lead. But he had to be a big man to swap instruments with Nokie Edwards, and finsih up with the rockband booby prize. As to the Mosrites, Gibson's apart, you see rock musicians sign a deal with a company of fancy guitar makers. A year or two later, they're not playing those instruments anymore. I'm told it's called back-on-a-Fender syndrome.

Son of Alba Steelman I just listened to The Colorful Ventures (for the 10,000th time) last night, also part of Country Classics. Bob Bogle had a FEEL on Lead Guitar that Nokie, as good technically as he was, just didn't have (listen, for example, to "Silver City" on Colorful). Also, the bass playing on Colorful is Superb, proving that Nokie was a better bass player than Bob! So why the switch? Jerry McGee is excellent, too, and I'm not dissing him or Nokie, but the Ventures records never sounded the same once they regulated Bob Bogle (RIP) to bass guitar.
@sonofalbasteelman3842

retrorex I am not going to disagree with your analysis, because I have been thinking exactly the same thing for years. I think the likeliest thing that happened is that after a while the band thought it was time to change direction. I suspect that Bob's technique either wasn't good enough or the style he used didn't suit the new direction the band planned. I agree with you that, while all musicians of a certain standard can play the right note at the right time, some can make the melody sing, while others sound mechanical. I also agree that Nokie Edwards has the soul of a bass player.
