I would upgrade the water bottle for a Grayl water filter, fairly expensive (but evens out if you consider the number of bottled water that it is replacing) and its a bit bigger than your bottle but can be used as a water bottle and when you get to where you are going, you can buy a single bottle of water, then use the Grayl to filter tap water and refill the empty water bottle - saving the cost of buying bottled water, the amount of plastic consumed and the knowledge of having safe water. Spare underwear and socks in the hand luggage along with some tissues, wet wipes and hand sanitiser will deal with most personal emergency's or just to freshen up (a big morale boost) A packet of chewing gum is also a good add, helps to freshen up the mouth and if you do get on the plane can help with popping ears

Had to google the Grayl bottle as I've not heard of it before. Have you used it yourself and would you recommend? Will do some research! Thanks for the backpack suggestions!

@@StrivingforSelfSufficiency Yep, I have two of the bigger Geopress (710ml capacity) - just to have to stock one filter - but for traveling, I would go for the Ultrapress version which is 500ml capacity. They are actually water purifiers - a step up from a water filter - which will filter out viruses as well as everything that a filter will remove. The filters are good for about 150lt and simply screw onto the unit, and in a SHTF situation would give you clean water for 30 days (going on the 5lt a day guide) on a single filter, but that will depend on the water, if it is muddy, it will filter a lot less I have used mine with water from a local lake that has a large bird population - so the potential for bird flu - It produces the full 710ml of clean water in about 15 seconds and tasted fine - I suffered no ill effects 🙂 Maggi Fushs gave me the travel top for using it abroad - shows that great minds think alike 🙂

@@StrivingforSelfSufficiency They are very good, a tad expensive but where your health is concerned it is worth it. I said about the murky water shortening the filter life, but if you use your Millbank bag to prefilter the dirty water, that will help keep the filter clean, it will be a bit of a faff and take a bit longer but if it prolongs the filter life then worth it. Maggi Fushs travel packing tips are amazing, how any one can go traveling with a single carry on bag is a real eye opener. Also her tips for exchanging liquids for solids in her toiletries is a great idea for any traveller or BoB

Shows just how reliant we are on everything working properly. It would be way worse if you were in a foreign country and something went wrong or the technology failed. I just shook my head when people were still going overseas during the health crisis years and then complained when it all went wrong. Only very local domestic travel for us but we've never been very interested in travelling anyway.

I know - it makes me wonder how robust the travel industry's business continuity plans are! I don't blame you - "there's no place like home" :)

Hi 👋 from the North East 😊. I have stopped flying anywhere . Just for the fact, I've got so much of my own country to explore. I've been abroad, as many have, but I like Britain. Plus, I'm lazy and irritated by travelling in cramped conditions. Maybe I'm just a moaning old git , but I like slow and spacious

"Slow and spacious" travel sounds great. We're now talking about a UK/Ireland trip in future. My tolerance for other travellers has definitely reduced (is that an age thing?!) Like you say, lots to explore in the country we live in :)

Braver than me flying atm! Curious did you instantly check phone for signal when power went?? I’ve not flown for a few years now and till we pass solar max and WW3 is not imminent i won’t. Hahaha but that’s just me. Hope you have awesome holiday.

I didn't think to check phone signal when the power went but now I think about it, our signal was really poor before the power cut (not sure if linked or not). I don't blame you for not wanting to fly at the moment - it's made me reconsider future trips abroad. And I had a great holiday, thank you!

You’re so limited of what you can carry on to a plane, that you could risk loosing half of your EDC kit at the security gate.

Yeah you’d have to be strategic about what to bring but even then it’s so limited like you say 🙁
