two of my favorite moments from the Waltons; the first one being the episode when grandma came home from the hospital and was feeling useless and sorry for herself. and then towards the end grandpa figured out a way to make her snap out of it and feel needed, "old woman, you're not gonna sit around here feeling sorry for yourself when there's chores to be done." then she whacked him with the broom and said, "you old fool," with tears in her eyes. grandpa embraced her and said, "you're back Esther, you're back." the other when Ben and his new bride are arguing in their "house" and grandma steps in. she hands Ben's wife the broom and points to the picture of grandpa on the wall, "old fool," then points at Ben and says, "young fool." then Ben's wife goes off on him and puts him in his place.

The Walton’s was a fantastic programme, it was a series that didn’t have violence, bad language, sex, political or religious rhetoric, but did address the issues of the period, growing pains, and personal relationships, so much better than the drivel made today. Stephen Crowder's dad told a story about his mother being a travelling salesman in the early 1900's and then moving up the corporate ladder. THe waltons and the values they enshrine, THAT is what conservatives mean. Not Mary Ellen coming home pregnant for the 4th time and hooked on meth.

@@reneeheknowsmyname6771 my main feeling on it is the entire show was based on his POV of life on the mountain during the depression. Once he goes, it’s kinda hard to examine his POV. They had to retool the whole point of the show. As for the momma, it was her character that more often than not was the glue of the family. When either character left it was a huge gift to the writers to end the show naturally and while they still owned the ratings. The producers greed kept them on the air and really tarnished the shows legacy. Ricky Gervais has the perfect formula, 3 seasons and a Christmas special, leaving the end the end. It’s always better to leave them wanting more than to have them get sick of you. MASH, The Office, Seinfeld, Dr Who, the list goes on and on.

Ahhhh yeah, I watched this every week growing up. I grew up in NC and my grandparents always gardened. They had two huge plots. Us grand kids worked those gardens all summer. I watched the Walton’s and some how I related with those Walton children. My favorite episode is the Christmas one. When they are waiting for dad to get home and he has all the presents. There’s a terrible storm outside, everything has gone wrong. But, there at the eleventh hour, dad shows up, he’s safe and has all the families gifts for Christmas. Love that! Enjoyed the video Nick! ❤️💜💚

I grew up in the early fifties in the coal camps of Southwestern, Va and had five brothers and sisters. We would always yell goodnight just like the Walton's until Daddy would yell 'Y'all quieten down and go to sleep' and we would turn out the lights and go on to sleep. He had to get up at 4 AM and go to work. I think that's why i love the Walton's show so much. It took me back to a better simpler time of my life.

I grew up watching the Waltons. I guess I was about 10 y/o and watched the first few seasons religiously. I don’t know if it contributed in some small way to my character, but shows like this, Dave’s & Goliath, the Brady Bunch, little house on the prairie, Emergency, etc., were all shows that had wholesome messages. I’m not sure young kids grow up with that kind of messaging today. It’s no wonder there’s a lot of hate and anger in the streets. They are pummeled with hyperbolic news and trash on the airwaves.

A "morning drive radio" duo in Birmingham, AL did a spoof of the show in the mid 1970s. John Ed Willoughby played "John Ed Boy", and his male partner Tommy Charles put on a falsetto to portray the character "Mama & Them." (For those of my dear KZitem audience who are not from or in the Deep South, a common greeting there is, 'How's your mama and them doing?" ). The duo also roasted Ms. Angie Proctor, a high visibility city councilman, with a spoof of the sitcom, "Mary Hartman". It opened with the familiar theme music, and an actual woman this time squeaking out, "Angie Proctor! Angie Proctor!"

What I took away from The Waltons as a kid/ teenager was Family Love & Support for one another. I started watching this Show with My Grandparents while lying on the floor in front of the TV. My Grandma would sometimes be crocheting while it was on & My Grandpa would be dishing out ice cream for all of us to enjoy during the show. What Great Memories I had with Them. Oh! & My Dad would be sitting on the Davenport (aka Couch for the newer generation😉) holding My 4yr old Sister & My Brother would also lay on the floor near me... only to irritate😲 me while I was trying to Watch The Waltons. Aaahhh!!! Those were the Days of Childhood with Family & Wholesome TV Shows of the 1970's.

I like the episode when the episodes come on TV I don't care which episode it was they're all good. It makes me so sad to watch The waltons I'm happy that you filmed showed this . Cuz I remember the days when my family got together and watch Andy Griffith and dukes of Hazzard stuff like that. But The waltons I got into when I'm much older we also watched Little House on the prairie. And I cried watching The Lost in the prairie all the tough hardship they had to go through and we didn't have to go through this much hardship and we complain too much. About the simple things. And we didn't have it that hard as children just all the screaming and a little bit of violence but it really wasn't so bad. It's actually worse these days. Cuz at least we had computers and TV and Nintendo no internet. Daddy's was a crazy time for us I know I was trying to say the '80s was a crazy time for us. Feels kind of strange watching the walls but I like it. Cuz we're living in a future age world today.

Unfortunately, a show like the Waltons could never be made today. It seems as though anything that praises simple family values is supposed to be shunned.
@truefanforum3273
3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. We still see family values in TV today. Just not in ways we easily recognize. We are also seeing other types of families represented and shown as valid as the "Norman Rockwell" version. Whether they are single parent households, blended families, and yes even gay couples, all are still families. People love to screech "family values" without even realizing what that means. And what's sadder some of those advocates are the last ones to practice what they preach.

Judy Norton once said that she was being paid $3,000 / week. In the 70's that wasn't chicken scratch, and was decent money. You could buy a new car for $3,000. Most people don't make that kind of money every week in the year 2021. They must have been big spenders.

My sister, Becky and I, (and our mom and grandma) loved the series. So much, that Becky called me one day and she was absolutely inconsolable. I finally got out of her why she was so upset. She said,”Grandpa died!” I started to get upset too, but then I remembered that both of our grandfathers had passed away before I was born. I calmly asked her,”What are you talking about? Both of our grandfathers died before I was born.” She took a long breath and said,”Grandpa Walton!!!” I then joined her in tears, and my Mom came in and asked what was wrong. I told her, and soon there were 3 of us crying...the show was a favorite of ours and we would miss Will Geer’s character, Grandpa Walton, on the show. I still watch reruns of the series on a network that runs them...it was a great show for the whole family.

It would've been far more correct to say that The Waltons was based on the 1971 Christmas movie "The Homecoming, A Christmas Story" which featured Andrew Duggan as John Walton, and Patricia Neal as Olivia. Edgar Bergan played Grandpa. As I've heard it, the family name of Walton's was used due to copy-write issues with the movie title. If I remember correctly somebody in Earl Hamner's family had been named Walton. This video is the first I ever heard of Henry Fonda being approached about the role. I remember at the time The Walton's went on the air reading in TV guide that Andrew Duggan had been approached but was either uninterested or unavailable. Hard to imagine anyone other than Ralph Waite in that role now.
