This opening was so good. It captured a lot. You don't see openings like this, and you sure don't see tv like this anymore.

I was 13 years and 6 months when this first aired in Sept 72, and as a young teen it was one of my favorite shows. The first 5 seasons were the best with the entire cast still intact.

This is my favorite version of the theme, with the autoharp (and maybe guitar, too?) at the beginning before that trumpet comes in playing those iconic notes. It takes me back to my early teens and taking comfort in a show that was close enough to my own family's experience that I seemed to instinctively understand all the scenarios played out each week. It's as cozy to me as one of the many handmade quilts my grandmother and great aunts made long ago.

God what a wonderful show. Used to watch this when I was a kid but didn't really appreciate it until I got older. There are two episodes on in the afternoon where I live and now that I'm home taking care of my parents I try to watch both of them everyday with my parents. What a heartwarming, intelligent show. Breaks my heart that we don't have shows like this anymore. Everything is so so trashy nowadays.

One of my best memories growing up was watching this with my parents. My dad would later record as many episodes as he could when he got his vcr ! His age in the Depression would have been between Elizabeth and Jim Bob, but he felt a connection to Jim Bob.

It's really amazing as to how much I had in common with John Boy at that time from how we looked more like brothers than my own to me being the oldest, coming from a similar family & keeping a journey that I tended to hide. I think everyone can related to a character in a given TV show or film. I grew up during this show. I watched it every week. I remember the pilot movie for Christmas. Although our times were different, I noticed so many similarities at the time. I was during the assassination of a president, Space Program, war in another part of the world etc but Severe County TN was very similar. Dolly hadn't built anything yet so there was no Dollywood. John Boy aka Earl Hamner who passed away this year grew up in the Blue Ridge while I grew up in the Smokies. This sure brings back memories & reminds me of the inspiration I was fortunate to have to not feel like the only teen boy who kept a journal & had plans to write novels. It sure would be wonderful if the Studios felt shows similar to this would bring in good ratings since we need something like this again.

Earl Hamner who created The Waltons said it represented his "Good" Side. Falcon Crest was his "Evil" Side. Nevertheless they are classics. Looking back Falcon Crest was the first show I remember where Latin Actors weren't in subservient roles. Lorenzo Lamas and Ana Alicia did so much for Latin Actors on TV. When Dallas was created, Lee Rich wanted to show a Powerful Dysfunctional Family feeling that some "excitement" was needed on TV and do a show that's 180% different from another Warner Brothers Show Eight Is Enough. Alot of amazing Guest STars came through. John Ritter, Melody Thomas Scott, Todd Bridges, and Lynn Hamilton who also played "Mama Viv" on the First and "Only" integrated Soap Opera Generations.

The show was a traditional country family type of show but sort of became a soap opera the last 3 seasons especially the very last one. It was getting into the early 80s and they were trying to keep up with the current trends/times.... The music changed at the end and much of it sounded like something you would have heard in a soap opera from that time.... The earlier episodes though in the early/mid 70s were more country mountaineer traditional, etc.

Kami Cotler did a video on the opening credits & she said she sort of remembers her run up but not. I also asked Judy Taylor about it on her channel and she barely remembers actually doing it too. In general, it was just another filming day and wasn’t considered anything special. Work is work I guess. I always preferred this opening compared to the other ones. If I’m not mistaken I don’t think it’s any longer than the other seasons.

I was always curious about that. It also explained why she was always known as Miss Michael Learned in the Opening Credits. She also tried to shake her image as Olivia Walton on a Drama called Nurses about a woman who returned to Nursing after her husband died and left her in debt. Robert Reed played a No Nonsense Doctor who wasn't very nice. I think he was also trying to shake his image as Mike Brady as well that's why he always did Dramas after The Brady Bunch.

Fortunately, Archangels are neither male nor female. So, being named for an archangel is not so bad. She started a fashion, though. I know several young women named Michael and one named Jeffery.
