As much as I enjoyed the quality of the video and agreed with numerous points, I really disagree with your take on DK Summit, and I want to break down the points individually to fully express my contrasting opinions from yours. Opinions are subjective, of course, but I do think you’re underselling the track objectively! The bump at the start of the track is something I’ve literally never noticed while playing, and it feels more like an intentional nitpick than an actual issue. The bump itself is so minuscule that I’m willing to bet that 95% of players didn’t know it existed, and it doesn’t even effect the gameplay in any notable way to warrant specific criticism. Complaining about the item box at the start is honestly probably the worst personal take I’ve seen. The way cannon physics work in MK8 make it to where it’s very difficult to be hit by a red shell or blue shell before landing, or directly before landing where the hit places you on the ground anyway. This, far more often than not, does not result in the player being hit, and in my opinion is a good change since it allows for action to begin directly after the canon, giving you a breather to plan your strategy based off your item-set and execute it. Overall, an unnecessary criticism that really doesn’t stand well objectively. The larger bumps, as opposed to the original DK Summit, can be a valid criticism, although I do personally disagree. The entire point of the bumps is that they’re there, they’re a part of the track meant to be tricked off of, an aspect which is almost entirely negated in Wii due to the physics launching you so high. The reason why I believe we disagree on this is simply due to it being different than the nostalgic version of the track, despite being a positive change that was intended since the beginning. Your opinion is certainly valid though, since you’re adapted to a different way of playing the game and this alteration must be jarring in a negative sense. The gap jump being easy, to the point of feeling like an exploit, is honestly a weak criticism. With the item-set right before this area, any player holding their items longer than seven seconds can through a huge wrench in the double gap, which makes up for its easy difficulty. Moreover, there’s a huge punishing wait if you fail the jump, making it a risk-reward deal. Depending on where you take the jump, you can land on the half-pipes and either gain an immediate speed boost, or land on or right before the speed pad itself and lose no momentum whatsoever. I haven’t had an issue with coins on the track whatsoever, there are ways to get coins at the start, but they aren’t the optimal route, which is why they feel absent from someone who follows a specific path, and also dislikes the large bumps, some of which have coins. Lastly, the physics! For someone who seems to have grown up with Wii, judging by the video, janky half-pipe physics really shouldn’t be anything new. Personally, I don’t have an opinion. I like the chaotic physics and think it makes the half-pipes more than just a brain dead speed boost, forcing you to consider how you tackle them and making the gameplay more interesting, since a careless blunder can be a actual detriment. I do agree, however, that the end shortcut can place you in a very janky area, and I wish the hit-boxes didn’t doom you into the off-road. However, this continues the risk-reward tradeoff, so it really isn’t a bad aspect of the course. Of course, opinions are subjective, and we just happen to feel different ways about one course. I actually agree with a lot of your points outside of that one track, the video is very high quality and it’s unbelievably refreshing to see someone not dunk on Mario Circuit for simply not being their beloved fan favorite. I hope my criticisms don’t come off as harsh or demeaning, as I think it just comes down to experiencing the track in different games with such a large time gap with different physics. Overall, I respectfully disagree!

@@milkshakedraws6944 I appreciate comments like these. Disagreement is what makes the world interesting. I do have some rebuttals though. I've played this track a bit more since this video came out and have a few new takeaways since I'm overall much more solid on it now with TTs. I'm down to a low 2:04 which makes me more comfortable playing online. I do think the item set before the cannon is a big problem still. It is rare to get hit in the cannon, but it still does happen. I've had a friend lose what feels like 10 seconds just because someone pulled triple bananas there. Once is honestly too much in that situation. I think having items before the first half pipe is not ideal. The best place for the set would probably be on cannon landing in my opinion. The larger bumps are still pretty atrocious in my opinion as they don't work well with motion tricking at all. Furthermore, what I've learned more in TT is to the double fast, the left drift (smt) you do on the lead-up can sometimes carry extremely awkward momentum based upon starting your drift on a tiny wrong part of the road. It is a huge turn off to making me want to play the course more in TT, admittedly. The part of the double that is hard is where you land I'd say. I'm still not a big fan of having to reaccelerate from 0 really in any circumstances, but that is a more personal issues. The halfpipes I don't actually think were super jank in Wii. They were definitely hard to maneuver but I think controlling them took a great degree of skill. One look at Blake's runs in MKWii's DKS should make this fact evident. I just think there is a big different between janky and clunky, if that makes sense. DK Summit was a really hard track in MKW, but I just think it operated much better. The cut was harder and just as punishing as you mention it to be in MK8D - making it an actual decision with risk/reward, and frequently at that. There were more viable choices, because you could only really take it with perfect conditions, making it less of a requirement for everyone else in the race. The fact that the safe version is literally harder in this game makes taking it or going wide for coins/boxes completely unreasonable to do so since everyone in the lobby will be passing you on the double (even if they perform the landing poorly). I'm glad you enjoyed the video today. I actually moved DKS above Amsterdam on my personal tier list today, but I think I'd keep the grades similar. Like mentioned, I don't think grades are the same thing as enjoyment level. With that being said, giving everything a good grade, even if I think a poor job was done, would make me like metacritic. It's hard to take anything away from my system if everything gets a B- or better.

@@HDRookie Hello! I’m taking the track from your perspective to try and analyze it similarly, that way I can make appropriate takeaways. I still feel that the canon items are less of a detriment than made out to be. Losing ten seconds, while being and sounding brutal, isn’t an atrocious payoff considering how easy it is to glide through the course with items, such as successfully performing the double cut and having a speed boost immediately following to boot! Even being hit, it shouldn’t take too much time to recover, although I agree that it could still be annoying. It really just comes down to how close everyone is directly next to one another on the cannon. Moreover, I’d say the lack of speed on the gap shortcut is a good tradeoff for its easier difficulty. If everyone got a speed-boost immediately following the much simpler shortcut, it would absolutely feel like a big cop-out and, like you mentioned in the video, an exploit. I think this ultimately comes down to perspective. Easier difficulty for a lack of speed, or not? For me, I think the ideal strategy for the cut is to land right before the half-pipe by the turn and capitalize off of that speed. Less air-time and less risk of overshooting. Lastly, the larger bumps! I actually don’t use motion controls, so your criticism, to my limited knowledge of how motion control plays, is absolutely valid there. I’m completely unbothered by them in regular steering, but I didn’t consider the feel of the bumps with motion controls and, I agree, they don’t sound very fun to encounter in that scenario. Although, criticisms and rebuttals to those criticisms aside, at least they kept the 1, 2, 3, 4, at the start!

I think DKS is an incredibly faithful reimagining of the original, due to recreating the jank in its own way.

@Alxium

The double gap cut is MUCH higher risk/reward than it was before. The respawn times are unusually long, but I think it really helps balance a cut that can be a bit overpowered at times. The bumps making it harder to line up for the cut is actually a great addition too. It adds more skill to a cut that used to be one of the easiest skips in MKWii. The half-pipes took some getting used to again, but man once I got the hang of it, it is just a blast screwing around with them. I'll even go into Time Trials and just try to do the wackiest stunts possible.
@HDRookie
Жыл бұрын
I have a huge disagreement here when it comes to the easiness of a cut. The risk/reward is a much larger factor in MKWii despite the fact that it loses more time in MK8D, because you can take it very poorly in 8D and still make it over. Maybe it's one of the easier skips in MKWii. It isn't even a skip in 8D. You just do it, because its not tough. It's hard to say there's a lot of risk because while you can fall off, it isn't something that should be happening. It's waaay easier to mistime it in Wii, at least.

Perfectly captured the sentiment I have towards DK summit, even after learning how to drive it it felt weird and it is because it demands an almost entirely different skill set then every other track in the game (driving wise). It wouldn't matter if the game had only a few tracks but it'll be 96 eventually and to have one single track that feels almost it's own to drive is just weird, especially coming this late in the games' life.

Your decision, no big deal. What I will say is that you have to play the clickbait game to get people to even try your content. I didn't put effort into thumbnails that invoke reactions in 2022 and before, and my channel had much less traction during those times, despite sometimes those older videos being even better narratively. Sometimes your content isn't for everyone. Same with opinions. But as someone making videos, it is better to have you here and disagreeing with my takes than to just have zero engagement at all. That's something you've just got to understand.

DK Summit perfectly recaptures MK Wii's jank, what sucks about it is that MK8DX has no cannon shock dodges.

Really think cannons act best as they do now. No disgusting advantage is handed out either way. It's still advantageous for a shock to happen in a cannon though, there is no speed reduction while small.
