It’s a dogleg gearbox meaning reverse is where first normally is. This is because it’s for racing and you only are in first in the pits therefore it makes shifts faster between 2nd and 3rd. This means people who are used to a normal manual can easily accidentally put it into reverse.

Can you even do that without putting the entirety of your bodyweight into it? I've had two 'regular' five speeds and with both of them if you were rolling forward at greater than a .25 mph or so it wouldn't let you put the car into reverse. You'd have to be pretty much stopped to put it into R. I guess ya can otherwise reverse lockouts wouldn't exist but just from the cars I've driven you'd have to really be trying to put it into reverse while going forward.

@@hockeyskates2637 yeah, I presume 2nd-5th are what you'd be using most often in a race, so having those be "centered" makes it easier. One of the other things people didn't mention is that this comes from an age just after an age where there weren't really set ways of engineering different things in cars, so it's a bit of an artifact from a time when everyone was doing something different. Other than going electronic or adding a ton more gears to automatics (or incredibly niche transmissions like some of Koenigsegg's), transmissions now are more "standard", whereas transmissions from the 40s to the 80s had lots of interesting design choices, both in terms of gears and shifting, as well as internally.

For anyone who was never taught this growing up with manual transmissions, here’s a tip that’ll make your life so much easier, as well as saving and elongating the lifetime and rigidity of your gear teeth inside the transmission itself. Tip: if you find yourself having trouble getting your vehicle into reverse after first cranking, or longer than normal forward motion driving, a good way to ensure your synchronizers, and your gear teeth, will have a long life and continue to operate trouble and damage free, is just simply by putting the transmission in 2nd gear, and then going from 2nd gear to reverse mm

In my Mk3 (‘96) VW GTI has a reverse lockout that’s similar. You don’t rotate the shifter, but you have to push it down about ¾” before it’ll let you shift into reverse. Ferrari did a similar thing on their 312T-series F1 cars with the same shift layout, just that they installed a flap that covered reverse. 1989 Ford Escort (European) had the reverse in the lower right position, i.e. below 5th (upper right). The lockout was automatically engaged and only there when you switched from 5th to 4th and had to pass reverse in the direction you might accidentlly put it in. When you came from neutral (and eventually 4th) it was not there and theoretically you could have tried to get into reverse instead of 5th.
