Gene Lockhart wrote the words for The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise with another fellow Canadian, Eric Seitz, a classical pianist who conceived the melody at the age of twelve.Gene Lockharts daughter June, played the mother in the hit, Lost In Space in the good old days of TV. This song has been around since 1919 but really hit its stride when Les Paul and Mary Ford took it to the heights of hitdom in 1950 when Les used his electronic inventions and considerable guitar skills to modernize this quiet old melody.
Here, at age 70 my father displays his virtuosity on his 50s era Martin uke , the sounds of which I grew up with. Unfortunately, arthritis has claimed the speed he used to have in his hands when he played the uke professionally. That aside,he still plays today as he approaches his 91st birthday. I apologize for the quality of the recording. It was never meant for publication and is really the only example I have on video.
Here, in Canada, he played guitar, banjo and ukulele in the back up band on the first evolution of Singalong Jubilee for two seasons. Many talents came out of that CBC television show, including one Ann Murray, another Nova Scotian who is better known.
BTW, that's a little bit of "Song of the Islands" also titled "Na Lei O Hawaii" by Charles E. King at the end.
