oh man I remember this game and I remember this dreadful stage in the ZVP meta where every game turned into hour plus long wars of attrition with swarm hosts launching endless waves of locusts trying to pick off a pylon here and a photon cannon there every so often while being unable to actually do anything about the nearly impenetrable cloaked skytoss death ball. I'm sooo glad they reduced the amount of resources at each base for LotV so we didn't have to suffer through so many soul crushingly long stalemates. Last season was kind of frustrating having to deal with having to play against turtling Skytoss players, but at least those games rarely went much longer than 30 minutes, unlike the Heart of the Swarm days where it wasn't that uncommon to have hour plus long games.
@EsportsStoryteller
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, skytoss wasn't close to those old games. HotS also had 6 starting workers instead of 12, so the first 5-7 minutes were usually very calm and nothing interesting happened. LotV really increased the pace of the game significantly

I remember this game. The eventual consensus in the community was that the players had tacitly arranged it between themselves that they would PURPOSELY stall the game to such a length, so as to cause a reaction regarding the game balance by Blizzard, who'd, understandably, NOT want the state of the Meta to allow for any such future disasters. To be fair, I agree with this assessment: Firecake had CLEARLY won by minute **40**, yet he did not seem to want to engage and win for some reason. Thus, it follows that there must have been some secret arrangement going on.

I had so much fun on ladders during this period. I’ve never been that good at SC2, or any RTS game for that matter, but I got good enough during this time to make it to silver 2, if I remember correctly. Plus it’s not like the people I was playing against at that level were all that great either. I’d set up a hidden proxy hatch near their main and wall off the entrance to my own main, harass with zerglings while I rushed swarm hosts, then just siege their main until I starved them out or they rage quit. Once I got a good group of swarm hosts posted up outside their main then I’d drop a hatchery behind them and run a Queen over from my hidden proxy hatch, build some spines and spores to protect the Swarm hosts, then proceed to just suffocate my opponent with an endless army of locusts and zerglings. It’s not like I won every game with that strategy, some people were able to counter it and beat me, but it was a strategy that I enjoyed playing and it worked for me a lot of the time. I never really followed or kept up with the meta which, coupled with my own lack of skill at the game, is probably why I only made it to silver 2. I was able to make it to like gold 3 or 4 in doubles though through almost nothing but double 4 or 6 pooling, and double proxy gates when we played protoss. To start out, the friend I did doubles with would just tell me what I needed to build and when to build it, and I’d allow her to have control of my units so she could do all the micro while I just had to focus on building my units. We made so many people rage and we’d be dying of laughter on skype or in Vent. Playing doubles with her is actually what made me better at the game, and is probably why I got decent enough to be able to make it to silver in the first place because before I started playing with her I was only able to get to around bronze 3. We had some good times though. I still enjoy playing SC2 every now and then, but I don’t play on ladder anymore because I’m just completely awful at the game and the game has changed so much since I last played regularly😂

Hah, classic HotS - creating stalemates by giving all races multiple siege options in the tightest maps. Those days were when I had some of the most tedious lategames and would stay up later than I was supposed to to finish out my match. Nostalgia aside, I am glad we have moved past these types of lategames. Even if ZvP has always been the most prone to drawn out games, usually it can be wrapped up within an hour. To spend three hours stalling just to eventually be forced to take a bad engagement is just a test of patience more so than skill.
@undrgrnd734

I was hugely into SC2 during WOL. What isn't talked about is at the end of wings of liberty the metagame had stagnated to the point where every zerg went infestor broodlord and games were always 1 hour long slongs. As a protoss player, ofc you can do a timing attack but.... often it did not work. Often... you were forced to do archon toliet because nothing else worked. This was masters 1/GM level. Seeing HOTS and the new units..... dude I was done. Blizzard was gonna add more siege units? and even worse zerg gets more free units? Saw the game going deeper into the 1 hour game and siege fest mentality instead of the dynamic aspect and left it for good. I'm glad now games are more dynamic and a lot more action packed. Wish it was like this from the beginning of HOTS.... as IdrA said, david kim needs to recieve a tire iron into his person. Blizzard did such a shit job balancing in HOTS and late WOL.

In deep late HotS there was a guy, running his stream, with a message to blizzards to fix ravens. He would make 200/200 clean viking/raven supply, grab every unit and building patroling in the corner and just live here forever. He could maybe have 10+hrs games long

I had a BW ladder game like this looong time ago. Final time was ~3 hours. It was on the island map where the only way you could get around and expand was by air (or nydus if zerg) to the other islands. It was a PVT, and we essentially got to a stalemate. Map was completely mined out. The opponent must have left his computer on and walked away thinking they'd get the W that way. I had maybe 3 scouts, a shuttle, and some zealots. I kept making progress, going back to a shield battery, rinse and repeat until I had destroyed all buildings and won. 3 hours of my childhood I'll never get back... but got the W!

Hello. Great material, just found the channel I really liked it. But I have 2 things: 1. 3h 04min wasn't old faster timer not adapted to game speed? 184 faster sc2 minutes would give around 131 real minutes. Faster speed is x1.4 of normal. Timer was adjusted to real time in LotV, so years after the match. 2. I can't get if you call it longest SC2 game or longest in whole esports. In terms of SC2. There was ZhuGeLiang vs Lillekanin later, 4h10min in game - so around 2h58min real time. 2015-01-13. Also match lead to drama regarning Lillekanin behavior in that match (messages on chat, alt-tabbing to check twitch chat etc.) Probably it was of all esports when it happened, but the record was broken later in 2015-03-20, Dota 2 - Cloud9 vs SFZ, StarLadder StarSeries Season 12: Europe and CIS - with real time of 3h 20min. Or maybe there was something even longer, like Age of Empires 2 games, they could go absurdly long, but dunno bout any record breaker in pro match.
