The reveal at the end that Gary wasn’t at a support group in the opening, but a psychiatric facility because he tried to kill himself, was heartbreaking. Especially after Simon Peg and Edgar Wright said that he was planning to finish it after completing the Golden Mile.

I understand why this is often people's least favourite of the trilogy, it is very different to the others, but this one holds a special place in my heart. It has so much more feeling than the others, that "it's all I've got!" scream brings a tear to my eye every time, when you realise that Gary had never intended to return after the golden mile (the only one without luggage, not wanting to show his wrists, the bandages, the hospital wristband).

For me, Hot Fuzz and World`s End share the first spot. Then there's a huuuuge gulf and then Shaun of the Dead. They are good in their own way, but I've seen Shaun maybe twice. Meanwhile, Hot Fuzz and World`s End are a yearly occurrence.

The World's End is about getting old, which is why it's generally the least popular. Shawn of the Dead is (late) 20-year-olds in a sharehouse, here everyone's very middle-aged. But my theory is it gets more popular as those who loved the first two movies age.

Shaun of the Dead used to be my favorite, then Hot Fuzz, and I didn’t really care for World’s End when I was younger. But now that I’m nearing my 30’s that personal ranking has reversed, especially when dealing with alcoholism in my early 20’s and feeling completely lost. World’s End holds a special significance for me now. And it has some kick ass choreography.

They call him the King. And of course the King has a sword. For it was foretold that in the time of Britain's greatest need the Once and Future King would return, with his sword Excalibur, to save the land he once ruled. Yes, it's an Arthurian story (confirmed by the filmmakers). I love watching people with no idea what's coming react to the restroom scene. :)

I love how it was so unhinged and yet at the end it was about Gary’s tragedy, just him trying to somehow make his life mean something again. Also I would totally watch a Netflix series about the post apocalyptic adventures of Gary King and the Blanks.

I feel like this is the "realist" of the films - although each of the Cornetto trilogy has an underlying and arguably relatable premise (Shaun being a manchild struggling to mature with Ed as his companion who has actively chosen to not mature, while Nicholas Angel exhibits an unhealthy focus on his job and is taught to cut loose and take things a little less seriously by Danny, who in turn learns to be a better policeman-officer from Nicholas), The World's End is decidedly the most cutting with its human narrative. The moving on of childhood friendships to adult distancing, the way some people cling to the past to the point of their life stagnating in the present and leaving them no future...even the kind of toxic or degraded lives the various guys outside of Gary were struggling with: Steven caught up in his love for Sam and apparently never being able to settle with another women; Peter with the sort of stifling characterization of his marriage, while Andy's was apparently on the rocks. The only one of the group that didn't somehow seem maladjusted was Oliver...and even he was still fixated on not being associated with the birthmark that made him "O-Man" in his youth. Each of the Cornetto Trilogy films has its own peculiar bent on people healing during the traumatic experiences during the course of the film and each the endings feel super real in contrast to the bulk of the rest of the movies....but somehow The World's End has both the most fantastic and yet also the most poignantly human ending amongst the three movies.

This one doesn't seem to be as warmly received as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, but I really love this one. Maybe not as funny as the other two, but arguably the most mature, character-focussed and thematically rich entry, and both Simon and Nick give what is probably the best performances of their respective careers. Plus, as is to be expected from an Edgar Wright film, the action is top-notch, the humour is delightfully witty, and the sheer amount of foreshadowing and key details packed into the script (e.g. the way the guys' 1990 pub crawl ends up mirroring the one from 2013) makes the whole thing incredibly satisfying to watch.

Seeing reactions to this movie by people who have no idea what it's about is one of my favourite things. :) They put all the reveals in the trailer, so it's a lot better when people go into it without knowing what to expect. Your reaction to the first fight in the bathroom was so good! I'm so happy you liked the movie as a whole. Even though this one got the fewest laughs out of the trilogy for me, I'd still say it's my favourite just because I care about the story and characters more than the other two movies.

Out of the three, Hot Fuzz is my favorite. This one definitely has an interesting premise that you're not really expecting, but it's pretty good. Seeing the characters in this one deal with some serious issues is nice. Not quite as humorous to me but still very well done. And for those unaware, they call it the Cornetto Trilogy because each movie has a scene where the ice cream makes an appearance to some degree. It's really subtle most times and the only real thread that connects them. Kind of a fun little thing to spot in each one.

This especially out of the Cornetto trilogy rewards repeated viewings. Edgar Wright layers so much into his films that you can see them many times and discover new parts each time. Movies with Mikey covered this in particular with their viewing of the trilogy. I very nearly walked out of this at the cinema when I thought it was going to glamorise Gary's self destruction. Then the fight in the toilet and I remembered why I was there and was thoroughly hooked. Apparently Simon Pegg is tea total and so this was a powerful movie and themes for him to explore along with the others.

This movie... hit me like a sack of bricks when it came out. At the time, I was unemployed, after having been let go from my job in the economic downturn, I'd basically had to move back to my hometown (which was very... agricultural, shall we say), and I'd tried (unsuccessfully) rounding up some friends to go see it on opening night. Suffice it to say, the themes in this one were... a little _too_ on point for my comfort. I still remember coming back from the theater and stopping by the gas station to pick up, one, a Guinness, and two, a Drumstick (i.e. the closest thing to a Cornetto that we've got in America). Still, I do love the movie!

I always felt this movie was a criticism of groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. AA has their famous 12 step program, and King feels like he has to complete the 12 pubs so that he can be something. A common criticism of AA as well is that "finding God" is a key part of it, and by the end of the movie the characters refuse to submit to a higher power, realizing that what they need are friends who are willing to stand beside them and be there for them.
