Your teacher is right. Anything can be art, even if you don’t like the art. Yoko ono is pretty polarizing, most of the music she makes isn’t really casually listenable, which is what most people like lol. I personally think most of its pretentious and not really that deep but there are a few tracks over the years where there was something of a point that I could get behind the message, but even then the music isn’t really good. So yeah Yoko ono is an artist. Is she a good artist? You decide (no)
@GabAssbreaker

@@llynxfyremusic this, whats good or not is subjective at the end, but that doesn't mean we can't dislike it. Yoko Ono maybe has some good ideas, but her execution is always terrible. Ironically shes been quite decent the few times she tried to do more conventional rock/pop music in the 70s.

I mean it's ok to know nothing about Yoko Ono and trash her music but in case someone cares - she was a well known performer and artist before she married John Lennon (Cut Piece made her kind of a name in alternative art community) and some of her ideas are really cool. Also, her family was crazy rich and she attended prestigious university (being the first or one of the first women allowed to learn there) with son of literal emperor

Her history is very interesting in her own right. I think her association with the Pop world sets up everyone's expectations for her music to be more accessable or contemporary than it actually is. That being said.. this album has so many decisions that seem corny, and her underwhelming vocals dont sell the radicalism she's attempting to represent. So what you get is this HILARIOUS, tone deaf album. Poor woman, if she got others to sing for her or with her this would be okay.

That "I Love All Of Me" song honestly just makes me sad, it's the point where all the wool comes off the eyes and you can tell she definitely had good intentions when making this album, that she genuinely believes what she's saying and actually has a decent message she's trying to share. But her music is so lacking in literally every department, besides the lyrics SOMETIMES flowing like a coherent piece of music, that it's impossible to take any of it seriously unless you already respected her as an artist. It sucks that she won't ever be known in the modern mainstream consciousness as anything but a joke.

Honestly, a lot of the online discourse I see around Yoko makes my stomach turn. There's so much vitriol towards her, on a level which you don't see with many other widely-disliked musicians. I think part of it is that people know her exclusively because of her association with the Beatles, so they go into her music expecting I Saw Her Standing There and While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and instead are given Why and Mindtrain, and they rate those songs by the same standards by which they judge pop music. Plus, I can't help but detect a thread of racism in the way she's treated. Her distinct vocal style is a choice-- she knows that she's not singing in a conventionally appealing manner, as you can tell by songs like "Mrs. Lennon", or "Un Un To", where she sings much more beautifully than on her noisier songs. But it seems like people are so used to the idea that Asian people have weird cultural values and are extremely different from Americans or Europeans that they attribute her style to naiveté and lack of talent rather than to artistic ambition. I certainly wouldn't call this album the best thing Yoko has made--it doesn't touch the stuff she recorded in the '70s--but I think that the people discussing it in these comments are being just a tad too cynical and cruel about it.

Yo I might just be stupid but I feel like “Why” isn’t the worst attempt at an avant-garde song. The main issue a lot of these songs have is that the vocals are so out of place and the lyrics are just ridiculous and not poetic. I feel like with Why, the over the top vocals kinda work with the instrumentation and background ambiance, and there’s no worry about shitty poetry. Edit: I also noticed that a lot of these vocals sound like first takes. Listen to the way she says “pillow talk” in the opening track. Sounds like an unintentional hesitation that somehow made the final cut 😂

The screaming video was actually shown in one of my art classes for a discussion on what makes "art" art. For this video, we talked about if she were screaming in a place that wasn't art museum or art fair, would it still be considered art or is it just someone screaming? In a way, I feel like this album could also be like that. Whether this album is art is subjective, all I know was that I couldn't take it seriously, no matter the context or format.

Warzone should've had a Westside Gunn feature.

I swear to God I heard at least one gun sound from Counter-Strike Source in “Warzone”. I think it was the MP5 sound

Listen, this album is horrendous. No getting around that. But I can’t help but admire the fact that Yoko actually had the couragereleased this hot garbage. You really can’t not respect that.

What's even scarier than the album is the fact that it has a 69 on metritic. Mojo gave it a 80.

Why do I feel like Yoko listened to the Shaggs Philosophy of the world, and unironically thought it was the greatest album ever made.

I felt like the first song had some potential if she'd put any effort into it's production instead of the stock elephant sounds etc.

When you’re in the control booth and Yoko’s screaming “WHYYYyyyYYyyYYy???” for minutes on end, you just gotta sit back and let the magic happen.

How does this have a 69 on metacritic, a 63 from Pitchfork... like I get there is attempts at genuine pain and expression but her voice sounds like Francine's Asian mother in American Dad doing half drunk karaoke.

Critics tend to care way too much about lyricism. As long as the lyrics mean something then it gets a good rating. And this album at least tries to mean something I guess
