Great video! I think it's a very healthy approach to recommend books in a "tailored" way where not every book will suit every reader. I am one of those people who read The Old Man & The Sea and just... was underwhelmed but I can recognize its value as a work of art! Anyways, I read The Sun Also Rises and haaaated it, but I want to read at least one more Hemingway before deciding he isn't for me.. any recommendations?

I read The Old Man and the Sea last year for a reading challenge, and for the first three quarters I was so bored that I kept asking my husband why he liked it, and he kept saying, you'll see. Then I got to that last section and I started crying so hard my husband had to hold my hand. I can't say I enjoyed it, but it certainly made me feel something.

Ive read Supernova Era and I enjoyed it. I love sci fi and dont care about characters in my sci fi. Hes a fantastic author with creative ideas and I cant wait to read more of his stuff, Ill be reading The Creteaus Past soon, I actually ordered the book a couple of weeks ago. I think Ill try out American Psycho because Im very much a fan of anything thats very taboo and frowned down upon in society.

I DNFed The Jungle in 1992. Read the cliff notes and got an A for my report. I will forever be grateful to cliff notes. I just couldn't get into it. Now, as a semi-adult, I'd probably enjoy it.

Without giving too much away, the great thing about The Old Man and the Sea is the way the struggle continues despite (or perhaps because of?) the certainty that what the old man insisted he must have has been lost -- but perhaps something greater has been attained. One of Hemingway's best.

Excellent job explaining exactly why each book is hard to recommend! I can relate to the title of this video with almost every book I love! 😆In fact, I made a video a long time ago called "Books I love that I don't recommend to everyone." To this day I struggle with only a small handful of books I might recommend to nearly all adult fiction readers.

That's an interesting mix. The Jungle actually sounds interesting, and A Time of Changes is a must for me at some point if only because it's on the Gollancz SF Masterworks list. American Psycho definitely wouldn't work for me from what you've described, the movie was interesting though. If you've seen it, how would you compare them?

“Robinson Crusoe” is a big childhood favorite of mine! I have not read any Ellis yet (though have watched some of his adaptations), but can highly recommend the podcast “Once Upon a Time… at Bennington College” about his time at that college, something both he and his contemporary (and widely different in style) Donna Tartt later used in their work! Definitely plan to read more Hemingway (together with John Steinbeck) in the future too! Excited for the announced release of an adaptation of “Across the River and into the Tress” with Liev Schreiber in the main role!

I remember liking The Old Man and the Sea, but I read it 20 years ago and don't actually remember anything else about it. Robinson Crusoe though, I found that so dull. It served the purpose of putting my 1y/o to sleep though. I would sit by the crib and read a chapter out loud and the monotonous rhythm of the prose would slowly send the very acrobatic kid to sleep. It was the only thing that worked except for going on a drive 😂

I read The Old Man and the Sea as a set text in English when I was a teenager in the 1960s. I liked it then and I still have good feelings about the book. It's a slow story and if people want fast pace action I can understand that they won't appreciate this book. But to me it was an exploration of empathy.

American Psycho is great because we become fully immersed inside the mind of a man whose realities reject our own so thoroughly. Bret Easton Ellis is a positively great writer, which is why this book is so riveting. It's not for the faint of heart, however.
