I haven’t read many fantasy novellas, but The Gallant might be my favorite. I loved it! I am the same way about putting off books I’m certain I will love. I’ve been doing that with Hobb’s Liveship Traders, and I also have The Forgetting Moon on my shelf. It’s like a fine wine you want to save for the right time! 🍷

Yassssssssssss happy to see Mercy of Gods hit for you 💪 Glad the new Bobiverse release felt like a step up from Heaven’s River-hopefully Taylor can hit a new stride with it from here on out. Forgetting Moon has been on my shelf for a looooooong time and if you end up loving it that’ll be a nice kick for me to push it up the ol tbr.

I was excited about Mieville / Reeves combo, but now I’m happy I didn’t buy the book as I have not heard a single person rave about it. The reviews I’ve came across have been either negative or at best lukewarm.

This month I read Prin tine by Ariana Godoy, Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff (this is what I would call the book of the month) and Bro and the beast by L.C. Davis and I started Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, Game Changer by Alley Ciz (it's the book that brought me closest to your American football). On TV, the only things I saw were La Vuelta and F1.

Really happy for you that these two highly anticipated books were hits for you. And dang I have also been kicking The Forgetting Moon down the road for ages, seems like I need to follow in your footsteps sooner rather than later. Hope it continues to be amazing! My book of the month in September was Hell of a Witch by Rachel Aaron, the sequel to one of my faves of the first half of the year. Never thought I could ever adore an urban fantasy so much, it's SO refreshing and good!!

I read The Mercy of Gods this month as well…I’m having a hard time being excited about it. I think the authors were really focusing hard on the inferiority of humans in this world, and intentionally wrote the story with a wicked anti-character slant, but I still didn’t love it. The Carryx are just…bugs. The characters are in some cases downright unlikable. But will I pick up the next one when it comes out? Probably 😁

I didn’t think about it that way but an intentional anti character slant is like the perfect way to put it

You should get one of those orange Dragon Ball shirts. My September so far in order. Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein 8/10 Conan the Barbarian (The Black Stranger) 6.5/10 by Robert E. Howard The Wind Through The Keyhole by Stephen King 7.5/10 Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne 5/10 The Steppe by Anton Tchêkhov 8/10 Death In Venice by Thomas Mann 7.5/10 The player of games by Ian M. Banks 6.5/10 War Lord (The Saxon Stories, #13) by Bernard Cornwell 8/10 The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien (rereading, in progress). Converting to Goodreads' terrible system it would be three to 4 stars, four 3 stars and one 2 stars. It was an okay month, nothing that really blew my mind.

I read the Forgetting Moon earlier this year, I thought it was super enjoyable! Its the kind of book that's not perfect, you see its flaws pretty clearly, and yet you can't help but love it. Durfee writes with so much heart, and his love for storytelling is so apparent.

Too bad the book of elsewhere didn't work for you. I went into it with low expectations and even then it didn't feel like more than a 3 star book. The comics essentially tell the same story, but there are some differences - a different ending, some side characters have different interactions with Unute, etc. Bearded Book Beast has read them, him and I did a collab on it where he kind of mentions some of the differences if you're interested. Still willing to take another crack at China in the future?
