Funny video, but, oh man, so much confusion about helmets there and in the comments too. ***Most helmets aren't designed to prevent concussions.*** That goes for both bicycle and motorcycle helmets. These helmets are designed to prevent death and severe brain damage. The concussions have nothing to do with how flexible the shell is. If you want to prevent concussions, look for 1) MIPS and 2) multi-density foam (that is, softer density foam to prevent some concussions, combined with harder foam to prevent death). Why would you see more concussions on EUCs? The only plausible explanation is that the EUC riders hit their heads harder. It can happen due to the way we fall-- there's a lot more to head impacts than than just vehicle speed. There's an easy way to check if you don't believe me. You think the TSG Pass didn't have enough foam? Then check the foam-- is it totally flattened down where it got hit? If not, then the impact wasn't even large enough to use up the foam it does have. And having a harder shell wouldn't have made any difference. In the video it looks pretty obvious that the impact wasn't hard enough to flatten the foam. So anyway. I do think a motorcycle helmet is a good idea if you're a fast rider. But "preventing concussions" is not the right reason to get a motorcycle helmet. Aside from a few helmets with special features, that's just not what they do.

Thanks for spreading the word with accounts of events leading The TSG Pass helmet is just not suitable for EUC riding! I recommend Shoei Glamster or Glamster 06 as direct alternative with comparable weight, but certified ECE-22.06 which is the most relevant for EUC riding as it has strict tests both for low and high speeds. Wishing Joy a full and swift recovery 🙏

TSG Pass is *definitely* suitable for riding EUC. It’s a downhill helmet, and the options you suggest are *at least* 30-40% heavier, and you risk neck injury because an MC crash is very different to a EUC crash. However, I speak for us who don’t ride 40mph so that you might prefer the risk of whiplash.
@sebgro

To add to that: MC helmets don’t give you the same situational awareness.
@supercurioTube

@@sebgro I own a Shoei Glamster in M and it's only 1150G, yet ECE-22.05 certified as a real motorcycle helmet. It's heavier than 980g indeed but only by 17% not 30-40%. Since it's designed as retro helmet it's compact and also has a great FOV as the chinguard is low. That's why I suggest that one as direct replacement instead of any other MC helmet (and got one myself) The frequent occurrence of head trauma Dawn and Joy described disqualifies the TSG Pass as EUC helmet: it fails at protecting the rider's brain. You know the saying: "You had one job"
@sebgro
Жыл бұрын
@@supercurioTube All the pics I see on Google, the chin bar is almost up your nose. With poorer hearing too, I’d say it’s suitable if you ride your EUC as you ride your MC. The PASS protects accordingly to their certificates of use.
@supercurioTube
Жыл бұрын
@@sebgro I ride with the Glamster so I can confirm the FOV is better than a typical MC fullface, probably thanks to its lower overall thickness. Despite being highly demanding on this criteria, I would rate the acoustics as very good for EUC riding thanks to well below average wind noise yet only moderate noise isolation. Not the best for loud motorcycles but ideal for us for situational awareness. Overall: highly recommended although it doesn't have the convenience of a convertible. I understand that you like your TSG Pass, but I can feel some cognitive dissonance from how you dismiss the reports of how ineffective it often is to protect us.

Not a good show for the TSG, but as you say it does look cool. But the wheels are getting faster and we do also ride them faster and most of the PEV helmets is not really made for those speeds. If I look at my helmet that is a downhill BELL, its not rated for high speed riding. The faster riders need to really look at motox or full motorbike helmets to keep the head safe.

“Flex and crack” is probably a very good thing (like the crumple zones of a car). If the helmet doesn’t flex or crack, the force of an impact is transferred directly to the head and neck instead of being absorbed (partially). To be fair, motorcycle riders tend to hit the ground at a near-horizontal angle, slide and tumble like a stone skipping across water. EUC riders hit the ground more like a tree that’s been felled and are slammed onto the ground; sliding and tumbling are just extras that are chipped in after the “Big Bang” 🤕. Question: What are the properties of an ideal EUC rider’s helmet? On thing is for sure, a great EUC helmet isn’t going to be a hand-me-down from any other transport mode.
@mig6220

Cars have crumple zones- but have air bags behind them. Bumpers flex, but are coil spring loaded. Frames are cages. Dashboards are soft to the touch for a reason. Steering wheels collapse on impact....see where I'm going here? None of this is in the TSG. It's just a thin shell, and your face.
@ZeroAlligator

Um no, flexing and cracking means those forces then go into you. There’s a reason why road helmets have styrofoam between the shell and your head, it’s to absorb the impact. TSG’s are garbage for actual crash protection.

Also this squeezing with your thighs is not the forces one would expect due to a crash on an EUC/longboard. Think about it. Only one side will hit the ground when you crash. Just like car bumpers they flex to absorb the energy. But yeah go off on these helmets and why they don't perform well when they are squeezed. Like are you expect to get hit by a car and pinned?

I love the TSG helmet. It's light, wide field of view, comfortable, and not too big. My only complaint is it's not very good for temperatures of under 10C, so I have to wear a ski or snowmobile helmet. I am looking into installing an electric visor on TSG, so fingers crossed that would work. The protection is more than good enough for me. Generally I need protection from sliding, not impact. And something is always better than nothing. This thin layer of hard plastic already offers you 90% or more protection compared to motorcycle helmets in real life.

Typically because of weight. Motorcycle helmet's are built with the assumption that you will be spending most of your time looking straight ahead. That being said, if non-motorcycle helmets really don't protect your head, then none of that matters.

@@joshuajones6113 "Motorcycle helmet's are built with the assumption that you will be spending most of your time looking straight ahead" In fact that just isn't true. (Seriously, look it up.) And motorcyclists absolutely wouldn't be riding in helmets they can't see out of-- that would be straight up crazy. This claim is a complete myth.

@@SkeptikosUTube Sorry...totally fair to call this out. I overstated that. I ride motorcycles as well as EUC's, and in my experience I don't need the field of view on my motorcycle that I need on my EUC. I'm riding with traffic rather than surfing it and so I do spend most of my time looking ahead rather than all around. The motorcycle helmets I do use in general have a much more restricted field of vision than the TSG, and it's never been an issue. I've tried my motorcycle helmets on my EUC and they tend to feel restrictive in this regard. I did not mean to imply this was because of any regulation, and to be fair doesn't apply at all to open face motorcycle helmets.
@SkeptikosUTube

@@joshuajones6113 I also ride motorcycles and EUCs. But what you're talking about isn't a motorcycle thing. Full face bicycle helmets, worn with goggles as intended, will be about the same. They are not made to have different fields of view. It's the TSG Pass that's weird here. The eye opening seems like it was made to hold goggles, but I'm not sure I've ever seen someone wear goggles with it. So it's a bit of an accident that you get more field of view from it. If you're a fan of this field of view "hack", you can do the same with motorcycle helmets-- dual-sport motorcycle helmets are designed the same way (they're made to fit goggles, but they have a faceshield) so you can get the same extra wide field of view from them.
