What a beautiful and enthusiastic reaction :) Throughout his 22-year career, Elvis has been changing like a chameleon. He invented himself at least three times, almost from scratch. In the 50s, he changed more than one generation over the whole Western world. Because of him, Rock`nRoll became internationally well-known. He changed the look of generations. People began to dress like him, young men and boys imitated his haircut and styled their hair like him, they started growing their sideburns, and they dared to wear pink like him. They began to move more freely to the music. Elvis liberated the youth from the claws of conservative America and consequently of the post-WWII traumatized teenagers of the rest of the Western world. Without Elvis, Michael Jackson would have stayed a brave-looking and very talented singer with a unique voice. But Michael Jackson`s famous and recognizable outfits would have never been born without Elvis paving the way. There were so many things only he did. He was a trendsetter in music and in many, many other areas. He was far cooler than people know.

How we met was kind of a long story but i will not explain because people judged and commented nasty hurtful things that hurt me deeply. So i will not post anything about our friendship ever again, We had a short conversation a few days before his death we were both very emotional. i will love and miss my friend forever. i walk past Graceland everyday sometimes i go in and walk around the grounds and talk to my friend at his final resting place. they know me there lol. Elvis recorded EXACTLY 769 songs ..... Did 31 Movies ..... Did 2 Documentaries ..... Did over 1100 Concerts in the Seventies alone ..... Who knows how many in the 50's and 60's }} ..... PLUS .... On August 31, 1957, Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana and the Jordanaires went to Vancouver by train to perform at Empire Stadium. It was the second stop of a tour of the Northwest that had started the day before in Spokane. By this time Elvis had recorded eight No. 1 singles in two years, had made three movies and was about to release 'Jailhouse Rock' as his latest single. Having performed in Toronto and Ottawa in April, this was only the third time they ever performed outside of the U.S. and for Elvis it would be the last. Vancouver's first rock-and-roll show had taken place barely a year before, when Bill Haley and the Comets drew 6,000 people to the Kerrisdale Arena. Now Elvis had drawn a crowd over four times larger. The 26,500 fans in attendance went wild for the King of Rock 'n' Roll. The stage was set up on the empty football field Elvis did it all ..... And he did them better than ..... ANYONE ELSE COULD ..... ANYONE ..... PERIOD

Jane H commenting ….. Sadly, there never was an old Elvis, as he died when he was 42, but his career right up to his final concert in June 1977, was still in full swing. He shot to fame as an 18 year old & was still the top selling artist worldwide when he died ….. & is still the top selling artist worldwide right up to the present day. This is from an early movie that Elvis starred in, called Jailhouse Rock. He was hot property in Hollywood & made 31 movies, most of which he sang in. Elvis was multi-talented, but he got frustrated with being type-cast in most of his movies, & returned to live performances in 1968, which is what he loved doing most of all. He was a revolutionary figure.

SHON! In terms of early Elvis, before anything else, before any of the Ed Sullivan Show appearances before any of that, you've got to see this iconic performance of Hound Dog in early 1956 when he was about 20 or 21, and this is the performance that set off that huge religious and racial backlash that resulted in them sometimes only filming him from the waist up, including some of his numbers on the Sullivan Show appearances that happened much later that year and into the next year. This is the one. And there are several videos of this floating around out there, but most of them don't show the most important part, which is at the end, when after they've done their very short television version, always abbreviated from the actual recording which was already short, the audience was so into it that Elvis, without any warning to the band and they had never practiced it this way, kept going only he's slowed it down to half tempo, and the band was so used to him being unpredictable that they immediately followed along and it drove the audience nuts. And in slow speed, he got to exaggerate his moves even more and that's what set off this huge firestorm. m.kzitem.info/news/bejne/ppmuvHWwsXeHh44

Well, let me tell you whats going on here sir. Yes, you basically started your video watching in the mid Elvis era. This one is considered the first "video" of what came popular in the 1980's with MTV. This is a clip of his movie Jailhouse Rock. Elvis exploded in 1956, and this was done in 1957. Elvis came on t.v. appearances and that's what broke him in public view, and got everyone attention. He was so popular that they began doing movies around him and his songs before the government saw him as a threat and had hm go to the service in the army. You are so lucky that you still have so many more videos that you still have to view. Its good to start from the beginning and see how he developed until 1977. Great reaction.

There are many facets to Elvis' music. There is Elvis in the beginning in the 50's - early 60's. Then he went into the Army for 2 yrs. When he came out the Beatles had stormed the country and the British invasion was changing the face of music. Elvis saw this and had to change to keep up with the times. His '68 TV Special is where Elvis really renewed and furthered his career. His music took a more serious turn where he started doing songs with deeper meaning and he turned to using a bigger band and a different blend of backup singers. This is where he became a great performer/entertainer and not just a R&R singer You have been listening to the Vegas entertainer. The early years of Elvis were songs with simple lyrics. When he started in movies his use of his vocal range started to broaden with singing songs written for the movies. It is interesting to watch his personal progression and the progression of R&R itself. Elvis took what black performers were doing and introduced it to the white audience. When that happened white performers in the U.S and Gr. Britain started copying. It is unfortunate though that the bigger band/orchestra sounds were abandoned for mostly guitars and drums and now there is so much use of the electronic sound instead of real instruments.

Very interesting comment Shelly and spot on except I would say he ruled the roost for about 3 years after the army as The Beatles hit the UK in 1963 and the US 1964.The black performers bit has a couple of angles in that he combined Country with Gospel and The Blues, Elvis's words not mine and Heartbreak Hotel was probably more country. Country influences were greatly played down in the movie which I can understand why.

If you see this, try checking out more younger Elvis in 'Hound Dog' - early TV performances of it had the cameramen scrambling to somehow not show his suggestively gyrating pelvis, deemed impermissible by shocked authorities and parents alike. Of course the young people loved it. Elvis was really the first time rock n roll emerged into the mainstream consciousness, with his broad appeal to young white audiences. The other early Elvis hit you must hear is Heartbreak Hotel. It has some great lyrics - "...it's down at the end of Lonely Street..." and is the song that first inspired the teenaged John Lennon to take up music. "I heard it and knew immediately - that's what I want to do.." He would go on to give millions of young people that exact same idea, through the skiffle group he formed that eventually became the Beatles.

Shon, you don't look at all like that Madagascar character. Whoever said that was crazy. You're right about younger Elvis vs. older Elvis. I've always been a much bigger fan of young Elvis because he was so much closer to his roots in those days. Probably the best way to look at it would be as though there were 3 phases of Elvis' career. 1) There was Early Elvis, which you see here. From 1954 to 1958, he was what created the legend that is Elvis. Born in 1935, Elvis was in his early 20's during this phase of his career, and he was still developing his style and still had all the energy of his youth. 2) In 1958, he was drafted into the Army for 2 years. When he came back, he was still good, but his manager got him into acting in movies for most of the 1960's, and that was a more "sanitized, marketable" version of Elvis. John Lennon was greatly influenced by Early Elvis, and he is quoted as saying "Elvis really died when he went into the Army." I can understand what he meant, because after the Army, we never again saw the incredible force that was "Early Elvis." 3) Finally, there was Older Elvis, which is what you saw in some of the first videos you watched, where he was performing on stage in the white jumpsuits. Personally, I never liked this version all that much because you could see him physically declining as a result of drug use and so many years of the pressures of just living life as the biggest star the world had ever seen. Drugs and having to be "Elvis" are the things that eventually killed him at the young age of only 42.

Rock was a new genre in the 50s. Until it came along the dominant music form were sentimental ballads which some have said were popular because America was still emotionally reeling from WW2. But the baby boom generation came of age and wanted something different. RnR was it. Presley was the first performer to introduce movement into mainstream shows. Society was sexually repressed in that time and Elvis's dance moves were seen as vulgar and a threat by adults. Some TV shows censored him and some various communities banned him or wanted him arrested. Silly now but these were real things then. Video tape didn't exist and filming was expensive and used bulky cameras. So the often riotous legendary performances were largely unrecorded. What we have left to watch from this groundbreaking Elvis period are performances in movies and a handful of TV appearances. The dancing seems tame by today's standards but people were not used to it on their TV ( which was new then too) screens. Elvis's rock records, though, totally dominated the charts, eclipsing every other performer. This level of popularity established rock n roll and its style and instrumentation as the preeminent genre of popular music for decades to come. For another good performance like this run the video for Mean Woman Blues also '56-57.

Hi, great Elvis videos! Clips to check out from the younger Elvis include: Baby I don’t care (1957 colorized), Hound Dog (1956 Milton Berle show).
