the way you're describing it makes it sound like it shares a lot of elements with deckbuilder rougelikes, where a lot of the exitement comes from finding interesting and powerful synergies between a bunch of mechanics interacting with eachother. I love deckbuilding roguelikes and I feel like I miss that style of discovery in more action focused roguelikes, so this sounds super interesting to me.

Go try it, I've been playing it for years now and it's still my favorite roguelike of all time despite having extensively played dozens of games in the genre and basically every subgenre. Finding a cursed relic that synergizes with the rest of your build perfectly in this game is probably the best that exact rush of excitement you're talking about gets in any roguelike I've played. Noita is another one that does that really well with its wand crafting system.

@EljayIsHere Have you ever tried enter the gungeon? It seems to have similar play style with finding guns throughout the floors of the dungeon. The combat is challenging, but also shares the start of the room aspect where you can dodge to assess how to go about clearing it. But as soon as you do manage to do that consistently, the wand crafting system starts letting you do some ridiculous things. Heat-seeking slime clouds, drowning the world in alcohol, miniguns that shoot exploding mushrooms, or simply firing one dinky little magic missile... Every frame. I think it would scratch a similar itch here, and once you get *good* at the game well, that's when all of a sudden it turns from what seemed like a simple roguelike into a game packed to the gills with secrets and hidden quests and parallel worlds and...

It looks different because it's being made by an entirely different studio of developers. The original Wizard of Legend was (If I have my facts straight) made by two people. They were both 18 year old 'kids' when they made the game, and got it published via Humble Bundle. Now Humble Bundle, who I'm guessing owns the IP and rights to WoL, has brought in an entirely new dev team to make the sequel. Maybe the original guys just didn't want to make a sequel, and Humble decided to go ahead without them. I don't have anymore info on that.

I think Dead Cells actually does roguelite progression perfectly. For instance, the health potion upgrade, which increases the amount of potion charges you can heal from during stages, goes up from just 1 charge to 4 total. This is a HUGE upgrade and is really good because you can refill your health bar whenever you take a huge hit. Sounds broken? It's great, until you beat the first difficulty, and suddenly you can't completely refill your health flask between each stage, and as you go up in difficulty, eventually you cannot refill your health flask AT ALL during a run, leaving you with 4 charges to get you through 6 stages and 3 bosses where anything can go wrong. And that's where it forces you to improve as a player, because you can't fall back on your health to get you out of bad situations, and are significantly more punished for mistakes. Giving a player this kind of strong resource, but then taking it away in this fashion as they progress to harder difficulties, is honestly the direction I hope Wizard of Legend 2 takes, since it's targeting more tangible roguelite progression than just unlocking new spells.

Around 5:42 is where his reason for saying so is clarified: very few roguelikes/rogue-lites have any replayability, which kind of defeats the point; they're **supposed** to be replayed, so if you can't keep replaying them, the focus of the game probably isn't the roguelike aspect of it. I personally think Hades falls into that category. Having sank hours into it only to discover the weapon upgrades were abysmal (as in, didn't change much), I was pretty disappointed tbh. Not saying Hades is bad overall, but imo it gets very repetitive very quickly as there is almost no variety, even with the weapon upgrades and boons. That's why I stopped playing it. It's ofc mostly subjective but one objective thing is that Hades clearly has more focus on story than gameplay variety, and to some people such as myself, that just isn't my thing.

PLEASE play Noita, it's probably the most convoluted game I have ever played, (at least when you look at all the things you can do) but even knowing just the basics is really rewarding. There's some people that build these honestly just ridiculous wands that utilize specific mathematical equations to summon a deer in a separate reality, just to swap your position with it, or a wand that creates an infinite lifetime projectile that follows you around and fights for you. I understand MAYBE ten percent of the game, and I have played it for only about 120 hours. I know the game might be hard starting out, but once you get to know how even one little thing works, you're golden. (Just remember, chainsaws are your friend) also, Hämis.

Other rogue likes expect you to optimize. Noita expects you to snap the game mechanics in half so things can get serious. Every impassable barrier in the game is a test to see if you can assemble something clever or broken enough to pass it anyway and find another challenge. And that's really it. There's no absolute rule in the game. There are a lot of hard rules, but if you know what you're doing and get the right stuff, you can break every last one. (Heck, the current WR speed run involves straight-up stealing a giant meticulously created spell from a previous run using an interaction that would be considered a bug if it didn't fit the lore so well).

There's no better roguelike experience than wizard of legend with the pre run option to cycle your spells every few times you use them. It's an experience I wish other roguelikes would have. Having to figure out what you have and how it works on the fly constantly for all your spells is just amazing and if you ever have a truly horrible line up, it'll get swapped out pretty quickly. The game does IMO have one real issue though and that is the camera is just slightly too zoomed in making it really easy to get tagged by off screen enemies. It can't really afford to zoom out much more either so I don't know the optimal solution but it became more and more of a nuisance the better I got at the game and the more challenging things I tried to do. I hope the sequel ends up well even if it has some concerning stuff around it's development (different dev, same publisher, new artstyle). Still, I very much hope for the best for it.

Isn't that a false dichotomy? Just because a roguelite has lasting progression doesn't mean that it can't/doesn't force you to try different things. It's just that a lot of the popular roguelites don't go as hard into synergies as some roguelikes do. I mean sure the progression can help you beat the game, but it rarely(at least when done well) is enough to just allow you to win without actually experimenting with builds. I mean dead cells is like one of the easiest examples of a roguelite that basically forces you (or at least heavily incentivizes) experimentation

@jonaut5705
4 ай бұрын
well, that's one interpretation, there are so goddamn many. Another big one is that roguelikes have to be turn based, for example. There's no real consensus on which is which, so the terms are generally interchangeable, with the exception being that roguelikes are generally a little closer to the actual core roguelike games (rogue, ADOM, nethack etc.), and roguelites are a little farther, usually being other concepts with some roguelike concepts thrown in like permadeath or procedural generation. but also sometimes the turn based ones are called traditional roguelikes, it's just really convoluted and it's not really worth trying to separate them for most purposes
@deebun2015
4 ай бұрын
Aren't roguelikes supposed to be grid based dungeon crawlers? You know... like Rogue, games like CDDA, Caves of Qud and Unreal world are all DIRECTLY inspired by Rogue, hence Rogue-"LIKE". Roguelite should be used as a broad term for games that has similarities to Rogue (Procedural generation and/or Permadeath), it'd be so dumb to improperly use the name of an ACTUAL genre just to differentiate a Roguelite that has Meta-Progression as opposed to one that has none. If that mindset was applied to ALL genre, then Minecraft would be a hack and slash, beat em' up game. I'm fine with terms and genres changing meaning over time (Like RPGs) but this one absolutely makes no sense and makes it super hard to mention Roguelike games, even the term "Traditional roguelike" is being used for Roguelite games SIMPLY because some are turn based and have some minor amount of Permadeath/Randomness.

oddly enough, despite agreeing that Hades is best played with Controller, I think Wizard of Legend is a fine KB+M game. especially if you have a gaming mouse with two side buttons, it makes all your arcanas / skills be handily used. not to mention Wizard of Legend has a lot more precise aiming required.
@Cerberusismycat

@@VinTJ Keyboard and Mouse VS Controller in WoL has a couple differences - Controller sports any direction whereas keyboard mouse is limited to orthogonal, however keyboard mouse has Dash to Mouse along with adjustable keybinds. i find if you can get around aiming on a controller it is more fluent and better to play with.
@VinTJ

@@Cerberusismycat that's fair, but like, I don't care about my own movement being "orthogonal" vs "smooth". I care about how the player does attacks; In hades, it's mostly hack n slash when you use swords, spears and shields. so I just use controller. In Wizard of Legend, some of my favorite spells care about direction, so I aim with mouse instead for very precise play. I know there's an argument to be made for either, I just have some personal preferences that made me do it this way

Out of so many roguelites I've played, I'd never expect youtube to recommend me a video talking this highly of 'Wizard Of Legend'. It's a decent game but it was a very repetitive and shallow experience for me. The combat is fun but nowhere close to carrying the game to something more than a few hours of fun. Crazy how tastes may vary lol

Have you played Enter The Gungeon before? I’m surprised I haven’t seen it mentioned here in the comments yet. It’s definitely not as much of a “deckbuilder” roguelike as the items you get in runs are more random, but that randomness adds to the replayability a lot. The progression is definitely slow at first, but there’s still so much in the game. The main turnoff is probably the difficulty when first getting into it, but it’s really fun to learn how to predict attacks and get better at dodging everything. I’ve done almost everything in the game, and still occasionally go back to do runs and challenge myself.

Instant subscribe I'd say. The game looks pretty great too. I've been thinking for some time I'd like to find a roguelike/lite with all the wizz-bang-pow that's become common in the genre but without the frustrating metaprogression grind, and here it is! Funnily enough I already knew about the game, I just didn't know enough to realize just how up my alley it really is.

At 3:50 you talk about how the first boss's pattern is just "dodge, dodge, dodge then strike, then repeat".. what really got me by surprise was how the bosses scaled according to the level you were at. The fire boss at the end of first stage only does that minor pattern but if you see her at the end of second stage she does something else and they even use the spells you can get as arcana cards; which makes it so that even if you are seeing them using a move for the first time if you've used that arcana before you know what to expect from the visual cues alone. This game is simply clever in its design. edit: lol a second later in the video you talk about the second part of what I love about boss design in this game and yeah, it deserves the praise.

Keep in mind that Wizard of Legend was made by two people. It's amazing that what I consider to be the best Rogue-lite/like of all time is the product of a two person team. Additionally, although there is a sequel to Wizard of Legend coming out, neither of the original devs are involved. The publisher, Humble Bundle, brought in an entirely different studio to make the sequel. It's being worked on by Dead Mage instead of Contingent99.

Meh, I felt like the potential for Wizard of Legend could have been so much greater, if the difficulty wasn't so absurd.. It falls in that category of Rogue-lites where the "upgrades" were just unlockables, and the gameplay itself was so RNG, that you pretty much had to beat the game without taking a single point of damage, or you had no change against the final 2 bosses. I also hated how if you played Co-Op, you had to kill each other, but it wouldn't bother to heal you after the match, which made the fight utterly redundant. Many times I would just let my friend kill me, cause it was waste, and I didn't want them to rage leave my house over an item we didn't get to use for more then a few minutes.

See the other thing about wizard of legend is that it has made me despise other games with magic systems because wizard of legends just feels like everything I want in one in the most perfect sense, not only are you learning how spells work and what goes well together for your build but it truly will become “your build” because your experience might never be the same as someone else’s with the game, it makes it feel like I’m actually looking and learning wonderful tricks myself in a certain manner whereas other games with magic have a more restricted system, a mage might only have certain spells it’s able to use or unlock and that’s it, or it feels restricted by mana which takes away the magic from the magic in a certain manner of speaking sometimes

I couldn't really enjoy Wizard of Legend. I don't think it's because the game itself is bad, but maybe because I just don't go well with games THAT brutal. I am able to beat any of the Risk of Rain games on Monsoon no problem, but maybe I would've never gotten to that point if Drizzle and Rainstorm didn't exist. I just kind of felt like I was never improving despite playing for hours. Perhaps some other day I could give it a second chance.

Also honestly no there is no Perfect Roguelike... Even Wizard of Legend features SEVERAL builds that completely crack the later game and you only have to make it through the early few stages.......... Either way Im cooking on sth myself with a few years to spare still but game is coming together and most things missing will just cost a lot of time, money and effort... Mostly money tho... Servers are expensive... Thus I can really put myself into the boots of this... Great game overall but simply just another game like Furi for example (With the difference that Furi isn't directly Roguelike but still) But in my eyes there is just one thing missing in all roguelikes... Multiplayer... Not that you "need" multiplayer but that you experience the game in more than just one way... Solitude has been one of the main downsides of Roguelikes in the past when it comes to replayability and mostly also outcomes... Imagine a Roguelike that evolves based on your decissions... Offers you the ability to play with friends and kicks you off with more than just the teaser of a story... Thats my idea of a perfect roguelike...

DUDE!. This game is the greatest roguelike of all time for me. This game is so fast space, there's no grinding, there's not "You have to die a ton of time to progress the story", the combos you can make mix into everything. You can have literally every single element on a build compare to other rogue like that force you into a build path of having 2 max 3 "elements". This game is underrated and i hated it didn't blew up because is so great. I really love it this one. This game doesn't have a compelx story. You just there to kick some ass and that's it. There's no risk or world ending narrative or drama. Is just proof you're the best wizard and dunk on those other kids. I played this game for over 100 hours and i never felt like i end up with the same build like in Hades or other rogue likes. No element was weak No skill was useless I cannot wait for Wizard of Legends 2

I loved WoL and I think all of the points you make about it are awesome, but I don't really understand the point in misrepresenting Hades as the other side of the coin. Hades gives you a ton of different ways to play the game super early on, and your example of upgrading the sword at 0:20 isn't even something you do until you've likely unlocked plenty of other ways to play. There are also boons that can change your playstyle mid-run, and also Daedalus Hammers that do so even more drastically. Along with that, Hades has a ton of meta progression but the Heat settings quickly outscale it, which means you're back to what you like about WoL's difficulty: Getting good at the game with your own skill. In the end, I think I preferred my experience with WoL because I like the bigger flashier attacks, but that doesn't mean that we should misrepresent other games. That being said, I think Cult of the Lamb DOES suffer from those issues, so I think you were valid to include it. As many other comments have said though: That doesn't make Cult of the Lamb a bad game, just a different one.

Hey! I didn’t think people would read into the Hades footage so much, it wasn’t meant as an insult to the game but more just ways to visually show rough examples of a roguelite that does meta progression and different play styles. That said, Personally I felt the Hades weapons to be really similar to each other, and not offer much variety, especially their upgrades. The boons throughout are absolutely varied, but thats a big part of most Roguelites, and not really what I meant. I think the Heat system was interesting but personally I found the increases in difficulty were a bit bland. But yeah, wasn’t trying to insult hades, just felt it was a common game that could really easily and visually show the idea of upgrades, weapons, etc Cult of the lamb? That was on purpose hahaha

i just play coop because this game IS genuinely unfair and playing it alone brings 0 joy to me. The enemies get stronger each level, you don't. You only equip one relic with little to no impact on your build and with the little to no healing, the overwhelming amount of enemies and the fact that you need to hit 20 times a regular enemy to beat it while they can destroy you at the slightest mistake. Roguelites are meant to be casual, you play for thirty minutes for one or two runs and then go to do something else. This game makes you sweat for literally no reward, which makes it tiring and hard to find a reason to play it when there are many other games like Dead Cells or Hades which give you increased rewards by increasing difficulty and getting to higher levels.

WoL is my favorite Roguelite. Easily the best magic game play in any game ever. The combat was so good. The music was great and magical. I love pixel art so much This game was frustrating AF. Relics had extremely little to no impact on gameplay, and getting something good is entirely RNG reliant Without i-frames, poor hitboxes were very prominent. I've died to attacks that didn't even physically touch me. There is no perfect timing in this game. You either move and cancel their attack, or get hit into a stun lock you can't escape The cooldowns were also effected by the lack of i-frames. Animation lock becomes unbearable without i-frames. I've ended up pressing dash or attack a nano sec too early and got hecked over WoL 2 was extremely disappointing. Pixel Art was the whole allure of the first game. Now it looks like LoL.. I probably won't play the game until at least a year after release. I honestly have low expectations for it

Pixel Decent is way too hard at first, so you're grinding upgrades forever so that you can eventually beat their procedural created dungeons. I'd rather have some well thought out dungeons that you can beat as you get better... not a game that is impossible without senseless grinding for upgrades.
