I dig it. Enhancing the playability of a classic design is nothing but good, in my opinion. It makes the LP appealing to a whole new category of player, and purists can still buy a more faithful reproduction.

Isn't that what the LP Modern is supposed to be though? This is classified as a historic reissue. It seems bizarre to shoe-horn modern features into a historic reissue and then say purists can look for a faithful reproduction elsewhere.

Final comment of the day/month. You seem to be getting better at playing. I think that's awesome! As an old-ish player who's not a pro I think you have a perfect reason/excuse/opportunity to put an extra 5-10 minutes per day into formal "practice" - scales, picking exercises, rapid chord fretting, etc. I don't do that and honestly only play monthly at best nowadays (band broke up in 2012). Probably you are already doing this and that's why I see the progress. If not, throwing an extra 5-10 minutes of practice per day in along with the daily production (if you have those minutes!) certainly won't hurt. Your bends are more fluid, you seem to hit the bent target note more accurately and you seem to be faster in your riffs. I love it when you learn (I assume) songs relevant to the model you're testing though I probably miss half of your references. Big fan! Thanks for what you do!

I'd buy that (from you) if it had a better top and covered PAF pickups. I don't improvise much up that high either but some cover tunes require it, so the modern heel carve is gravy. I learned/progressed on a Parker Fly with crazy high 24 fret access and don't really notice it switching between a Parker and Les Paul FWIW. Maybe it's a shredder thing. I don't seem to notice neck profile much either, but I have big hands, started playing Hendrix stuff and do lots of thumb fretting (two and three strings with my thumb). Love your reviews! Hi guys just wanted to comment and say I own one of these. Serial# R8 60808 I love the guitar! I got it on a trade the day after Christmas this past year and I traded a player grade 1980 Kalamazoo made explorer. A 30th anniversary Gibson sg with a repaired headstock and a Japanese les Paul from 89 with the Gibson style headstock; well almost! I loved those guitars but they all had problems and this one didn’t. Mine also has binding bleed. The poker chip is actually different than standard models we’re used to now and I also want to add the plastics are made to the same grade as they used to be made. This was a huge piece missing for me when it came to custom shop instruments. I didn’t know the grading for materials is less now then it used to be. The pickups were fine but I did swap them out for a pair of Seymour Duncan custom shop pearly gate antiquity’s. If you have the chance to do so DO IT! Huge difference in quality and tone even for the cs PAFs. The neck is the only downside it’s just massive. I still play great I love it and feels like a man’s guitar but I don’t play as fluent on it as I do my 1960 custom shop strat which has the absolute best neck I’ve ever played. Just wanted to share my story! These go usually in the 3500$ ball park and are definitely worth it!

Another great review! I like the idea of the contour in practice, but I am a traditionalist by nature when it comes to these R's and I'm not sure if this should even be called an "R". Never-the-less, I might consider owning one and this one is a beauty. As you've said, it's hard not to compare this LP to the Ronnie Montrose R8. The RM is certainly more historically accurate. Tone wise, this one is brighter and cleaner sounding and the RM is chewier and sounds like it's always adding a little breakup to the tone. The lack of pickup covers on the ContouR8 could account for at least some of the brightness and the custom winding of the pickups for the RM could account for the chewiness. I have an R9 and an R0 both from 2020 and both with covered, unpotted Custombuckers. My R9 sounds more like the RM and my R0 sounds more like the ContouR8 probably due to variances of the Custombuckers.

So I am an Axcess fan, I have 3, the only reason I have 3 is cause so hard to get good different finishes. I have Black, DC rust and then an Ox blood from the mod shop. I would love to have some standard burst finishes, some AAA flames on Axcess with a Floyd ;-) But this one, the chunky neck makes me say No. Made me say no back then, makes me say no now. The whole reason I get the Axcess is because the neck and the floyds. Sweetwater did a limited run Bourbon Burst back in 2017 or 2018 but I just couldn't come up with the cash in time and they went fast. I also swap out the 490 pickups in them to Suhr Aldrich, the sound a lot like Custom buckers with just a bit more clarity.

This ContouR8 looks great and sounds even better! The pickups are bright, without the heavy midrange that so many humbuckers have. It sounds much better than the Ronnie Montrose model you reviewed a little while ago. Every humbucker-equipped Gibson I’ve ever had wasn’t quite bright enough, but they all had covered pickups. I like the way they look with the covers, but they seem to sound better without ‘em. The guitar looks great too-nice top, and the cherry sunburst is nice and vibrant. Overall, it reminds me of my old 1980 (bought in ‘81) Les Paul Heritage 80 Elite that had great-sounding ShawBuckers in it. This one’s prettier, though, and maybe a bit lighter-I got rid of the 80 Elite after twenty years because it was killing my back!

Been wanting to suggest this. When you measure the middle pickup setting resistance and say, "just for fun", I know what you mean but others might not (I break out the calculator every now and then "just for fun" to verify that it gives the same as your multi-meter). For anyone other than Austin reading this, the middle position resistance can be calculated from the neck and bridge values and this is just something that folks who know some electronics stuff. Anyway, I thought it might be useful to sprinkle in, maybe every 10th episode or however, something about how the middle position can be calculated from the neck and bridge pickup resistances. Not saying you go into the math, but convey the fact that this is "just for fun" just because you don't actually need to measure it - science/math can tell you what it would be (and actually is - because SCIENCE). Could go farther and link to parallel resistors or even tie it to the context of wiring speakers in home and/or car audio.
